Retroactive Review - Goodbye to a piece of Eugene history 👋 - Edit
I just couldn’t not review Cornbread Cafe. Like for so many others, this place was special to me. I used to travel up and down Oregon a lot, and I would always try to stop here when going through Eugene.
Read moreThe Eugenewich was legendary, easily one of the best “burgers” I’ve ever had, especially when they were still putting the crispy carrots on it. And their southern fried tofu still remains the best fried tofu I’ve ever had anywhere.
I’m going to miss you, Cornbread Cafe! Thank you for all the delicious and nourishing soul food! 💜💜💜

Vegan Comfort Food in Eugene - Edit
I used to live in Eugene. I almost worked in the back of the house at Cornbread Cafe. I come from a culinary arts background and still love cooking vegetable forward vegan meals.
Read moreCornbread is unique in that it does vegan comfort food aka comfort food like sandwiches and sides very well.
I recently went here with some friends. We enjoyed our meal. I am a big fan of Reubens and here they do it right. Perhaps a touch heavy. They use seitan for the protein aka wheat protein which I am fine with yet prefer tempeh Reubens. Still all in all it was quite alright and got it with a side of mashed taters and gravy.
My friend got a French dip sandwich with fries. That she enjoyed.
Her sister went with the southern fried tofu and cauliflower wings. I tried the latter. It was tasty yet was breaded and deep fried.
I think Cornbread Cafe is good for vegan comfort food to enjoy on occasion when not following my regular whole food plant based aka vegan diet.
Recommended to give a try in the area.

Absolutely The Best! - Edit
Driving through on the way from Petaluma, CA to Portland, OR and found this little gem of a spot. Amazingly one of the best “vegan comfort food” places that I have tried (and there have been many). The Eugenewich was probably the best I have ever had. The biscuits and gravy… to die for. Obviously, homemade biscuits. The Reuben was fantastic too! Don’t forget the cornbread and the hush puppies. It might be worth the 500 mile drive just for the food. The staff is friendly, accommodating and extremely knowledgeable. They went out of their way to make it an enjoyable experience. Can’t say enough!

AMAZING VEGAN COMFORT FOOD - Edit
Cornbread Cafe was nothing short of delicious!! Loved their little diner style. We chose the hush puppies, cauliflower wings, and Ruben. Also got a side of cornbread because it felt like a must. We were not disappointed. Unfortunately they were out of ice cream that day and we couldn't try the milkshakes.

Comfort Food in a Comfort Zone - Edit
On a recent trip through Eugene, I was very happy to find the Comfort Cafe. The Cafe lives up to its name and reputation. The "Eugenewich" with sassy slaw, jalapeno cornbread with maple butter and chocolate oatmilk shake were full of flavor and rich in texture without leaving a "heavy" apres-meal feeling. The Cafe atmosphere is cozy, vibrant and artistic, befitting of a University town. I will definitely eat there again and look forward to trying the other menu offerings.

Awesome All-Vegan Comfort Food! - Edit
This is one of our favorite stops in Eugene on our way to see family. It's great vegan comfort food. We can't wait to get the Eugenewich! It's so good, we've hardly tried anything else on the menu. One of these years we'll venture off in a new direction and order something new. I'm sure it's all good!! Until then, we definitely recommend the Eugenewich and this restaurant. The staff is friendly, the food is fast and hot, and delicious and the vibe is fun! It's a diner and it has that casual, relaxed vibe. We'll be back again next year to maybe try something new, or maybe just the Eugenewich again. Update: My daughter says the chik'n & biscuit is her favorite over the Eugenwich.

Phenomenal vegan comfort food - Edit
If you find yourself in Eugene, Oregon, Cornbread Cafe is a must try. They serve breakfast classics, salads, sandwiches, and a $16 BYOM which comes with an entree, two sides, and delicious jalapeño cornbread. I had the chik’n fried tempeh with gravy and enjoyed every bite. The crunchiness and spice of the breading is top notch, and the country gravy it came smothered in tastes just like my mom used to make it. No complaints about the sides either! The only issue we had was the cinnamon roll, which was so tough that I could barely chew it enough to swallow. However, I am sure that the baked goods are excellent early in the day— my mistake was ordering a cinnamon roll at 4 in the afternoon.

Tasty, small portions - Edit
Stopped by for a quick lunch while in town for work. Tried the Grilled Greens salad and Mashed Taters & Gravy. Overall, very tasty, seasoned well, and at the right temperatures. The salad was a bit small; too large to be a side salad but too small to be an entree. I recommend increasing the portion size and charging a few $ more.

This review was the first I saw on Cornbread Cafe’s profile. 3 stars is REALLY harsh here— this review should be deleted or rewritten. You chose to order the $8 salad, you got what you paid for. If you wanted an entree sized portion of something, you should have ordered an entree. For anyone reading EABessel’s review, don’t worry about the portion sizes— they are appropriate for what you order. For $16, the Build Your Own Meal is enough to satisfy even the largest of appetites. My partner and I had to take leftovers home because the portions were so large. Don’t let this reviewer scare you away from trying Cornbread Cafe, the concern about small portions is illegitimate.

Amazing comfort food! - Edit
Price is fair for what you get. One of my favorite restaurants. Came to visit once last Sept (from out of state)…loved it! Then moved here a month ago and have been 4 times now. Food is always on point! I’m trying something different on the menu each time and have been satisfied EVERYTIME!
Read moreMy husband always gets the Barbie Melt and I have to admit, it is special!! Sooo good…shaved seitan, melted cheeze, BBQ sauce! But I’ve also had the French Dip, ckn n biscuits (cashew gravy is pretty dang special!), biscuits and gravy, Ruben, oh and the hush puppies wow are so good! This place never disappoints! You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Thank you Cornbread Cafe for making some amazing vegan food!! However with all that said, the mac uncheeze is just okay. It’s good but not the best I’ve had. But that’s ok bc the mashed potatoes and cashew gravy is sooo good!!
Pros: Just absolutely delicious!, Shaved seitan is perfection, Hush puppies
Cons: Not really a con but Mac uncheeze is just ok.

Premeditated Stop - Edit
Drove down to southern Oregon to visit Crater Lake National Park and I knew either on the way there or back I was stopping here. I had figured I would get the Eugenewich and when I asked the person working what I should get, he suggested the Eugenewich so that’s what I got. I also ordered corn bread, macaroni, and hush puppies. The sandwich was fantastic. I loved every part of it. I didn’t care for the macaroni though. Hush puppies were good and the cornbread was so good that I ordered some to go.

Tastes Like Home - Edit
This is just what I would want for comfort food at home. Ordered the chicken biscuit with mashed potatoes and white country gravy along with the hush puppies.
Read moreIt has been too long since I had hush puppies. I have really missed hush puppies. I also may have had an emotional experience over the mashed potatoes.
The country gravy has bits of seitan in it to simulate sausage, and it’s absolutely delicious. The chicken biscuit was bigger than expected and fried perfectly. The hush puppies were served with a spicy dipping sauce and wonderfully crispy.
Everything was hot and delicious. Cannot recommend highly enough for an indulgent comfort meal.
Pros: 100% vegan, Served hot, Indulgent
Cons: Served in plastic with plastic utensils

best. food. ever. - Edit
I had the best chicken and waffles of my LIFE. My friend got the chicken fried tempeh with mashed potatoes & gravy, fries, and a biscuit and enjoyed it thoroughly as well. the chicken had impeccable texture as well as flavor, the gravy was creamy (& the seitan bits added great flavor and texture), and it all came together in such a lovely way with the maple syrup. I also got a chocolate shake, which was fantastic. Oat milk ice cream for the win.

They got rid of the cole slaw, raised prices, and made the portions smaller. So it’s still good of course, I’m just a little sad about the changes. But they added buffalo cauliflower that’s really good!

Iconic Diner with Eugenean Flair Serving Stripped Down Comfort Menu - Edit
Post Co-Vid this established Eugene and Springfield institution have significantly pared down their menus. My missing vegan favorites are the Moody Portobello and the Eggs Benedict. Served with gluten-free Mac & Cheese sides, side of fruit cup for the light and health conscious, Cornbread caters to those craving heavy southern comfort food and brunch. Eugene has shakes while Springfield has an alcohol licence.

Take a Trip for the French Dip - Edit
I ordered the French Dip with JoJos. I was disappointed our food was packed to go even though we were eating outside. It was wasteful, and all the paper was blowing away in the wind. Similarly, we were given a bunch of ketchup packets instead of a refillable bottle or a small ramekin. I understand if the lack of dishes is due to concern of COVID-19, but they allow indoor dining, so that doesn't make sense to me. Otherwise, the food was delicious, but I hope they start using real dishes again.

It has a very homey feel with a really kind staff. The food was incredibly high quality and very tasty. The milkshake was un-freaking-believable. I was only in Eugene for 2 days and I ate here both days. I wish I had plans to be in OR soon. I miss this place lol.
