Few vegan options - Edit
Since my previous review, they've started meat, stopped being zero waste (or so I've heard), and stripped down their vegan options to almost nothing. Incredibly disappointing. Previous review is below, but not really relevant unless you have a time machine.
Read moreI liked the croissants, and the pistachio one was something I've never had before!
It's worth noting that the kitchen closes at 15:00 (16:00 on weekends) so if you show up an hour before closing, you might not be able to get anything from the printed menu.

Pros: Only 15 minutes from the main station, Pretty good food
Cons: Pretty expensive - about 4€ per pastry

The best vegan pastries I've had - Edit
07/25 - much like everybody else, I'm disappointed this place is no longer all vegan. However, that doesn't detract from the fact the vegan pastries are still incredible. I went there again recently and everything I have said previously for the three sweet pastries still stands. There are vegan options on the regular menu too.
Read moreI'm here to rate the food and not the business decisions. I don't run a food business I don't know the pressures they may have been under that led to this change.

This place has become a staple for my Berlin visits and is top of the list when planning what to eat. The pastry is light and always has a good crispy snap to it.
The cardamom croissant is my highlight. It's a bit like a monkey bread with little bits to tear off and eat. It's sweet and sticky with a nice hint of cardamom to it.
The pistachio croissant is excellent too. A lovely croissant filled generously with a tasty pistachio custard with lots of vanilla too.
The vanilla spandauer is great too. It has lots of lovely vanilla custard and is good and crispy around the edges but does lose some of that in the base.
We had a couple of tomato and potato pastries to take away for lunch. They were a bit disappointing, the pastry was nice but the filling was pretty meagre.

Very very sad - Edit
They are not fully vegan anymore. And they delete Google Maps reviews if you critisize them. So sad

Sad that they’re not fully vegan anymore - Edit
EDIT: They removed my 1 star review on Google and accused me of libel for saying I was disappointed they are no longer vegan. Absolutely shameful business practices, I don’t think anyone should be supporting them! You can’t even express your opinion about them if it’s negative or they’ll censor you. So disgusting.
Read moreI’m glad I saw a post online from a customer saying they’re no longer 100% vegan, or I would have of course assumed their newly added eggs and cheese menu items were vegan versions. There are other great vegan places quite close by that I’ll be giving my money to in the future, really sad to see businesses move away from environmentally friendly food and toward animal cruelty.

Now they even added meat to their menu as well. Because they are not even vegetarian anymore, now you're not forced to give them the 2 stars as a minimum required by HappyCow. I updated my review to a 1 star today.

Terrible. - Edit
It used to be a vegan place, but now they serve animal products. They suddenly changed the menu without telling vegans. And now they have blocked people on Instagram, and are asking Google to remove all the comments saying they were vegan and now they are no longer.

Yup they deleted my 1 star review on Google despite the fact that I was a customer there and was just sharing my opinion. So unethical!

Awful place and management - Edit
It used to be my favorite cafe in Berlin back when it was vegan. Then they became vegetarian and the place started smelling like eggs. Now they serve meat and took most vegan options off the menu. After addressing it on Instagram Google Maps, they deleted my comments from both (and they delete all other negative reviews).

From vegan to vegetarian to serving meat. Wtf - Edit
All of their pastries were vegan and 4 out of the 10 dishes on their menu are vegan. I ordered stew, a pistachio croissant and some tea. It was all really good. The bread I got with the stew was amazing, bathrooms are quite nice looking and sitting by the window in winter was lovely as the heater was on full blast. I paid 5€ for some basic chamomile tea though.
Read moreGiving 4 instead of 5 stars because according to previous reviews, this cafe used to be fully vegan but isnt anymore.

Seeing a place like this going backwards is heartbreaking. A place that became popular selling themselves as vegan and now giving up on it on convenience.

Former vegan bakery added meat and fish to their menu. 😢 - Edit
Used to be one of Berlin's best vegan places, however, in 2024 Frea Bakery added eggs and dairy to their menu, and in March of 2025, they even went as far as to add meat and fish to their menu. This restaurant is not suitable for vegans and vegetarians due to obvious cross-contamination in a very small kitchen.

Already convinced/not full vegan anymore - Edit
Edit: I decided to change my review now because they’re not fully vegan anymore. Not because I don’t support places that are not fully vegan but it’s rather disappointing if a place that has access to many vegan customers decides to go from vegan to vegetarian afterwards.

Beautiful vegan pastries - Edit
We tried a chocolate chip cookie and a hazelnut croissant, both were delicious. The vegan options are clearly labeled, there are many of them, and prices are reasonable for such beautiful pastries. I believe the croissant we had was €3.80.

the food is wonderful!! the cardamom croissant is a dream come true as well as the filled one (a richer, somewhat 'nutella' like filling) and the savoury "flatbread" (which isn't a flatbread but a slice of toast, flat bread I suppose) is nothing short of perfect. excellent bread, mushrooms, pesto, homemade 'ricotta',...
yet the service is awful.
the staff is quite rude and condescending, the self service is a chaotic mess. I've come back a few times and I'd love to love this place because the food and concept are wonderful but even for Berlin standards this place really needs to work on its FOH.

Alright - Edit
The vegan avocado toast and the lox were quite good but rather expensive for what they were. I also tried the savoury croissant and didn’t like it at all. The oyster mushrooms were very chewy and didn’t have much taste.
Read moreThe interior is nice, but it’s not very comfortable to stay there for longer than necessary as it’s often packed with people and it can get quite loud.
It’s a shame Frea Bakery felt the need to add animal products to their menu. What’s worse is that they offer more non-vegan items than vegan items. Some of the non-vegan foods could easily be made vegan, such as the pancakes, but they choose not to do that.
