Nice Little Cafe - Edit
Just wondering around Middlesbrough with my girlfriend and we decided to give this cafe a try as we were peckish. Thought the cafe was closed at first but it had a note on saying they’re closing the door to keep heat in. There was no need to book, just a simple walk in and there was no paper menus on the tables, just a menu on a chalk board at the counter. Customer Service I thought was a bit poor, seemed like the waiter has had a bad day or something along the lines. There was plenty of seating available as it was quite quiet. However upstairs was not available on this particular day. I ordered a sausage bun and my girlfriend ordered a falafel and hummus toastie. The food came relatively quickly and was quite nice. If you’re about in Middlesbrough I’d suggest a pop in

Worth a try but not for me - Edit
Cafe Etch has a nice vibe with plenty of seating, no cramped feel unlike other establishments. They could do with an update to their decoration style. I found that the location of the cafe was very convenient, being right in the town centre.
Read moreStaff are knowledgable about veganism and the service was rapid so no complaints here.
I had the falafel and hummus toastie which was okay but a bit dry for my liking which made it off-putting to the point where I couldn't finish it. Other options included a vegan sausage bap and a few other hummus + toast combinations.
At £5 a toastie I didn't feel that the price was too extortionate. It's definitely worth trying at least once but I wish that a few changes were made to the menu and dishes served.
Pros: Very vegan friendly , Knowledgable staff, Reasonable prices

Excellent vegan options - Edit
Thoroughly enjoyed our experience of Cafe Etch. Such a friendly and inviting cafe with an excellent menu full of vegan options. We each ordered the hotdog, which came with coleslaw and salad and also shared a very refreshing mango, pineapple and banana smoothie. The hotdog was superb and had such a great texture with a lovely accompanying coleslaw. To finish our meal we also ordered a slice if carrot cake and a sprinkled cake, as it would be rude not too! Both cakes were moist and extremely flavourful, the carrot cake especially yum yum. Definitely a place to visit when in the 'boro.

Was served Emmental cheese in my toastie. - Edit
I really want to give this cafe 5/5 because the staff are wonderful, the food is usually great, and the vegan options are varied and delicious.
Read moreHowever, today, I ordered a vegan cheese toastie and my partner ordered dairy cheese toastie. These were served to us, vegan first and dairy second - the waitress made it clear that the supposedly vegan one was served to me. But, I got halfway through mine before realising it was dairy cheese. I checked my partner’s sandwich to discover his was the vegan one. You can tell by the smell and texture, but I had been so hungry I’d wolfed it down without checking.
The staff were really apologetic and refunded my order. I was relieved that they seemed to understand how upsetting it was for me.
That afternoon, I had stomach cramps, vomited at work, and had to go home early. I hadn’t eaten dairy in years, so my stomach was really upset.
Sadly, I can’t say I’m planning to revisit any time soon. Just really disappointed, it seemed like an honest mistake, but it’s the kind of error that can be easily avoided, and it’s made me very unwell. If I had an allergy rather than an intolerance, this could have been much worse.
I won’t give up on the cafe, as any independent local which caters to vegans is worth supporting in my book, but due to this traumatic experience I will be giving it a wide birth for a while.
Pros: Lovely interior, Great staff , Good choice of meals - amazing cakes!
Cons: Served me dairy., Understaffed

Love the vegan carrot cake here! Amazing place for working on creative projects like writing. It's such a gorgeous space to find some fresh inspiration. Shame you can't allocate five stars on the app!
