Pretty expensive but worth it

Super creative menu and it really tasted absolutely immaculate. My mum really wanted to try haggis while in Scotland and here she finally got the chance.

Upscale vegetarian with vegan options

We will enjoyed our experience for dinner last night. The vegan haggis was our favourite. The blood orange cheesecake was really really good!

Lovely place for a fancy meal!

Love Hendersons for a fancier meal out. It’s expensive, but the food is great quality, the menu is super-varied and the staff are always really friendly. I love the layout and the atmosphere, too. Definitely a must-try when you’re after an upmarket experience. The Sunday roast is incredible!

Heavenly Cullen skink

We visited in September 2025 and had a lovely dinner. Atmosphere was cozy, and the staff was super friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed the non-alcoholic drink selection and the food was tasty. It was fun to try local specialties. We fell in love with cullen skink soup. It's comfort on soup form, you have to try it if you visit!! We have longed after it many times 🥹

Pros: Cullen skink < 3, Friendly staff, Interesting non-alcoholic drink options

Amazing nut roast and dessert! Mostly vegan

Super happy to find this mostly vegan fine dining restaurant! Edinburgh is very vegan friendly, but a lot of the time vegan options at a Scottish restaurant are limited to vegan haggis, curry, or veggie burgers. Here, pretty much everything on the menu sounded amazing. The ambiance and decor inside were very beautiful as well.

I got the nut roast and my partner got the risotto. We loved both of our meals, and I can comfortably say they were the best we had in Edinburgh. (The nut roast is a great option if you’re craving a Sunday roast but aren’t in the city on a Sunday.) We also both got dessert (mince pie cheesecake and Swedish chocolate cake) - which we never do, but all the vegan options looked so great that we couldn’t decide. I even got an after dinner drink because it was so nice to be able to get a nondairy cream-based cocktail!

My only complaint is the size of the appetizer, and it is the reason why I could only give four stars. We ordered the oyster mushroom scallops to share, and I was shocked at the fact we only received four very tiny “scallops.” Sure, the dish was tasty, but for £10 I was a bit taken back. I would recommend skipping this appetizer as our mains were quite filling anyways.

Pros: Fantastic options, Ambiance

Delicious Scottish cuisine

A cosy place, nice decor and super busy was the first thing I noticed: good sign! Then one of the servers who seated double checked that I knew it was a vegetarian restaurant, as some people wouldn’t know and expect to order meat- but I was happy with this and asked what the vegan options were like. Turns out they’re great!
I had Cullen Sink soup to start, and really warming autumn soup that was exactly what I wanted on a cold damp Edinburgh evening. Then the signature Henderson haggis was recommended, because I’d seen another diner having it! Served on root mash, with whisky tarragon cream caramelised red onion. Delicious.
I had the local elderflower wine from Cairn o Mhor, Scotland which was amazing with its tart juicy citrus flavours offsetting the warmth of the food.
To finish I nearly couldn’t decide dessert, but had the white chocolate and blackberry jam cheesecake, and had a scoop of the Jura single malt Whisky 12 years shortbread crumb on the side! (Got to have the whiskey ‘nips’ when in Scotland).
100% recommended, I am sometimes up in Edinburgh so I will be back!

Sunday roast at Hendersons

At £21.50, I had fairly high expectations for the roast dinner, but unfortunately it fell a bit short. The food itself was tasty, but it was the first time I’ve had a roast and still felt quite hungry afterwards. The portion included a small serving of potatoes, a quarter of a carrot and parsnip, three slices of seitan, and a small Yorkshire pudding. I would’ve loved to see a bit more variety of vegetables on the plate — though you can add some green veg for an extra £6.50.

The cheesecake was delicious, but again, quite a small portion. Altogether, at £42 for a roast dinner, dessert, and a mocktail, it felt like rather little food for the price, and I left not feeling fully satisfied.

That said, it’s a lovely restaurant with a great atmosphere, and I’d happily return for a special occasion — just perhaps not for the roast.

Best mushroom steak so far!

This is the first 5 stars for a non-plant-based restaurant, but there are loads of vegan dishes so plenty of choice and innovative cooking. The mushroom pate with bread was a good start.

But the star was the mushroom steak-

Marinated Lion's Mane mushroom steak, wild garlic chimichurri, buttered asparagus, british smoked quinoa tomato dust

The steak pieces were tender and deeply flavoured. Chimichurri was a wonderful complement - full flavoured and plenty of it. The quinoa was a revelation too - I would love to know how this was achieved.

Whisky flavoured ice cream with shortbread was terrific way to round it off. Delicious

Absolutely fantastic experience—vegan dining at its best in Edinburgh!

Hendersons in Bruntsfield is a true gem for plant-based cuisine lovers. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the warm, modern atmosphere—stylish yet relaxed, with a cozy neighborhood feel that perfectly matches its location near Bruntsfield Links.

The food was outstanding. The lion’s mane mushroom steak was a standout—rich, meaty, and beautifully seasoned, served with flavorful sides that elevated the dish even further. It’s the kind of meal that surprises even non-vegans. And don’t miss dessert: the white chocolate raspberry jam cheesecake was absolutely to die for—creamy, decadent, and perfectly balanced in flavor. One of the best vegan desserts we’ve ever had.

Service was friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the food they serve. You can tell the staff care about the experience they’re creating.

Whether you’re a dedicated vegan, exploring more plant-based options, or just looking for a delicious, thoughtfully prepared meal in a lovely setting, Hendersons is a must-visit in Edinburgh. We’ll definitely be back!

Must visit

Elegant gorgeous place and food. The host and server were some of the most friendly and welcoming we have met! I am so glad to have found this place. We got the haggis as recommended and of course had to get the cheesecake😄haggis was incredible. Tasted like it had a Christmas spice in it. Maybe cloves or nutmeg? Kind of expensive but it is Edinburgh after all. The cheesecake was expensive for the size but had a wonderful texture. Tasted like very thick yogurt. Was white chocolate raspberry.

Pros: Food, Options , Super super friendly

Cons: Expensive , Cheesecake very small
