Ubon THAI is Fire! - Edit
This is a 5-star rating but because I did not identify as vegan, Happy Cow policy disallows my fifth star to be gold. Of course, Ubon is a great vegan option! -PK
Read moreLocal and enjoying Ubon for many years! I take issue with the review mis-characterizing this gem in our community as baiting Thai only to provide "Indo-Chinese" cuisine instead. Wow. This is what the intersection of 'smug' and 'ignorant' looks like. Try on instead 'Nepali-Tibetan' if your need for hyphenated over-generalizing tags goes unsated.
This restaurant is awesome and perfectly fits the wonderfully weird setting that Nederland is! This place and these people are part of why I LOVE Nederland as my home . The service and food is consistently top-shelf. I typically go with Thai HOT for almost every noodle dish. Never disappointed. Perfect early morning leftover for English football, BTW. Whether dining in or taking away, this will be the flower of your day!

Not really Thai but tastes…fine? - Edit
I lived in SE Asia for some time so to be fair my bar is quite high for Thai food, but this is a very Thai-food-approximated-for-white-people type of place. The food can be good though as long as your expecting standard Americanized “Thai” food. And many things on the menu can be made vegan which I do appreciate. I’ve heard it may be owned by the same people as Kathmandu across the street, (Nepali and Indian food) which is honestly quite good so I do recommend that over Ubon.

Indo-Chinese - Edit
As soon as you enter Ubon, it’s clear this is not a Thai restaurant (the Chinese decor and Indian servers for a couple reasons).
Read moreI was hungry so I decided to sit down anyway and order a spicy eggplant dish the staff recommended. The dish barely contained eggplant, there was little of it, and rather than a Thai basil or bean sauce, the dish was smothered in a sweet barbecue sauce and prepared like a Chinese stir fry.
I wasn’t the only patron to take issue. Those across from me enjoyed their food but didn’t think it was like any Thai food they had before due to the thick sauce on the Pad Thai.
This is an Indo-Chinese restaurant advertised as Thai to lure in folks.

Best Thai food in the mountains - Edit
I love this place. Such well made dishes. The chefs will work with you and make what you want a vegan dish. The Tofu is done so well. The best I have had in so long.
