Chips and peas - Edit
Hoped to have the pea fritters but they unfortunately didn’t have them that day, but we instead went with chips and mushy peas. Great choice, can’t go wrong with that!

Wide variety of vegan options - Edit
A wide variety of vegan options although missing the elusive equivalent to fish, its the typical vegetable sausage battered affair with a variety of other options. The food was of reasonable quality and value worth a try if you fancy fish and chips in Whitby but I wouldn't suggest going out of your way or making it a destination

Visited here due to seeing on Happy Cow. Not disappointed with selection available. Did have to wait for items to be cooked but small price to pay for good vegan food!

Vegan chips in Whitby - Edit
Finally, a restaurant which doesn't fry their chips in lard! We went to Robertson's to get takeaway chips and the nuggets. Ate them by the sea and were very impressed with the chips, which were deliciously crispy and just like chips should be. The veggie nuggets were vegetables in a nugget shape, kind of like you would buy in a supermarket, but because we'd read the reviews on here we knew what to expect! Something a bit different from just chips, and reasonably priced. Would definitely get again.

Deep fried happiness - Edit
I have literally never before seen a chippie with vegan options that aren't just chips or the occasional spring roll. Honestly they could have served me deep fried garbage and I'd have been happy. Fortunately they didn't! They served me deep fried deliciousness!! As others have said, it's a little odd to have sausages made of mash with chips but it was very nice so I'm not complaining.

Don’t be fooled by the sausages - Edit
Me and my partner saw this place when we visited Whitby and saw the vegan battered sausage on the menu we were excited. DON’T BE FOOLED! the chips were nice and we had curry sauce and peas but we were expecting a battered linda McCartney sausage or vegan Richmond and what we was got a battered vegetable mush with rice. Don’t get me wrong it was still delicious but we had very different expectations. Fair play to them they have a vegan menu in a chippy which is unheard of where I’m from but at the minimum the battered sausage should be a meat alternative.

Hi sorry you didn’t like the vegetable sausages! Not sure why you would want meat alternative instead of vegetables?

Only just seen the reply. Vegans do eat meat alternatives contrary to popular belief. Nowadays there are a lot of good meat alternatives battered vegetables just do not make the cut. Also if you read the review I did say that it was still delicious although I did expect something different when battered sausage was advertised ☺️

+1 on this. The chips were nice but was expecting a proper battered vegan sausage. Lots of good alternatives nowadays so was expecting more.

Eat vegan at a Whitby chippy - Edit
If you’re travelling with non-vegans, then they’ll no doubt want to to go to a fish and chip shop. But most of them use tallow to fry in. Here they advertise that they fry in sunflower oil and now actually have a vegan fryer!
Read moreThe serving staff understood vegan and said that to to use the vegan fryer for the sausages opt for them not to be battered.
Tip: if out of season then mention at the start you’d want the vegan fryer as it may need 20 minutes to warm up if it’s not been used much that day.
Pros: Vegan fryer for chips and sausages, Serving staff understood vegan

Pretty good - Edit
Previous reviews have mentioned them cooking vegan sausages etc in the same fryer as fish, this is what pretty much every chippy does unfortunately, BUT they listened and now have a completely separate fryer for vegan food!

Missed opportunity - Edit
Fantastic chips can be enjoyed here and I always visit whenever I come to Whitby. A meat free menu is offered but as some have already said, these are cooked in the same fryer as the fish. Such a shame and a missed opportunity surely.

Very interesting. We were under the impression items were fried separately on our visit in 2017. I’ve commented on my review and will also be extra cautious next time and may just have to order chips only

Fishy - Edit
Traditional English chippy that cooks in vegetable oil without beef dripping. There's meat free and gluten free options on the menu, but almost everything is cooked in the same fryer as the fish! The waiter knew what was suitable for vegans and checked the suitability of the gravy with the chef.

Meat-free menu fried in with the fish! - Edit
Only the chips are suitable for vegans. They have a 'meat-free' menu which includes veggie sausages and burgers. We asked if these were suitable for vegans and were informed they are fried in with the fish, which somewhat defeats the point. They do have a separate fryer for the chips which they say are cooked in vegetable oil, so goodness knows why they can't have a separate fryer for the meat-free options also. Although they don't claim to have vegan options, frying the meat-free options in with the fish shows a lack of understanding about why people want 'meat-free' in the first place. They have gone to the effort of creating a 'meat-free' menu so why not go one step further and make sure that these foods are not mixed in and cooked with the meat?

Went here looking forward to sausage and chips but was told that they fry the sausage in the same oil as the fish the only thing separate was the chips. Had to make do with mushy peas and a side salad. Sounds familiar !

Only veg oil place in Whitby - Edit
Lots of places advertising "traditional" chippie fare. Aka - Animal fat. As there were lots of veggies + vegans in our group this place was sourced to get dinner. It was asked if the veggie sausage was vegan and today we got an answer in the affirmative. It was very tasty and reasonably priced. Good dinners by the beach was had by all, just watch out for the seagulls and DON'T feed them!!!

Good Whitby Chippy - Edit
We got the veggie sausage and chips here which were confirmed as vegan but only if fried without batter. They were OK but not great, too "vegetably" for me. However the chips are really chunky and lovely and even better if served with gravy which is vegan. The staff have a sheet which lists all allergens and are happy to consult it for you if asked. A nice place.

Great chip shop with vegan and gluten free options - Edit
Have visited a few times now. I believe it's the only chippy in Whitby to fry in oil and to fry chips and non meat items separately. The battered vegan sausages are amazing, they also sell a mushy pea fritter, a cheese fritter and a bean burger. They can do anything in gluten free batter too. They fry everything to order in the take away section so it took a little while for our whole group to be served but it was well worth the wait!

Share some greased tea with me - Edit
Well known amongst locals, tourists and members of the goth community who generally frequent the town throughout the year but particularly in late April and late October during the fantastic Goth Weekends as THE only fish and chip shop in Whitby to fry purely in vegetable oil. They also fry meat and non meat items separately unlike some chippies I know. We've been coming here for years, the chips are fabulous and they also do battered vegan sausages but I am yet to try these. I think I will rectify this misdemeanour very soon. I'm drooling at the prospect already. I always make sure I get a packet of chips from here drizzled in vinegar and spattered with a fair sprinkling of salt before partaking in a leisurely walk around town. We don't deep fry or use salt at home, so it's an acceptable vice I think. Obviously, there are meat products on display at the premises which may be disconcerting but I feel this is something which unfortunatley cannot be avoided particularly in a typical seaside English chippy.

Having read other reviews posted since mine it appears the vegan items aren’t fried separately any longer or maybe this was never the case in the first place although that’s the impression I got at the time. Also the sausages we had were confirmed as vegan on the ingredients sheet but only if fried without batter.
