A magical place with adequate options that are always improving. - Edit
I LOVE Nepenthe, not because it's got the best vegan food on earth, but because they have good vegan options that they are willing to elevate for you on request. The people, views, and atmosphere combine to create a magical space. Over the years as we've frequented this business often, they have surprised us pleasantly more than not, and are always willing to fix mistakes happily. The bar is divine with historic greats that have gathered there, in a building reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright as it was designed by one of his students...
There's a lovely garden on the property with wildlife everywhere, including deer, a myriad of birds, and whales can be seen off in the distance on clear days. The seasonal grilled vegetable pasta is incredible, drinks are amazing and sorbet for dessert hits the spot.
We were visiting family in Big Sur, California for an event , so dining at Nepenthe was something we were looking forward to. We ordered a vegan burger and were told that the bread was vegan only to find out it was not from the waitress. When it was brought out the runner seemed a bit upset to have to send it back because it wasn’t vegan bread, Also the fries were served cold!
Seemed flexible but the food was incredibly disappointing - Edit
The location is absolutely amazing, and the ocean views are wonderful.
However...
We emailed in advance and we’re sent a very helpful list of the dishes that could be made vegan. I did have a nagging doubt that they seemed to involve removing meat/dairy and not replacing them with much else. But harissa roasted vegetables and tofu sounded good so I thought we’d be ok, and the location would be worth it.
In reality that wasn’t the case. Our brussel sprout starter was nice but a bit limited (meat and cheese had been removed) but the main was really, really poor. The tofu/vegetables simply hadn’t been marinated as the menu said and the cous cous was dry with some cinnamon added to little effect. All in all one of the worst dishes we can remember having!
Beer selection was ok and the cocktails were very good.

Pros: Filling Meals, Several Vegan Options, Incredible Views & People
Cons: Need More Vegan Entrees, Some Items Could Be Easily Veganized By Default, They Do Serve Non-Vegan Food

Expensive drinks and food. The veggie burger wasn’t very good either, but the fries and salad were good.
