Separate vegan menu - Edit
They have a separate vegan menu with many options. We had the loaded vegan nachos and I had the street tacos while my husband had the burrito. The portions were large and everything was delicious.

Tasty - Edit
Went here out of a friends recommendation. It was a delight. The ambiance on the wharf is great and there is inside and outside seating. They had a separate vegan menu that had so many options. We had the nachos with added beans, enchiladas and tofu tacos. All very tasty. Our almost 2 year old loved it as well.

Not bad, but not Mexican… - Edit
I didn’t read the reviews here, so I didn’t know to ask for the separate vegan menu…. But several of the vegan items were listed on the standard menu and marked as vegan, so I went off of that. I got the vegan burrito as a bowl, and it wasn’t bad. The portion was reasonably small, which I appreciated as I wasn’t that hungry and often burritos and bowls are ridiculously sized.
Read moreThe bowl was listed as having beans, rice, pico, lettuce, sautéed vegetables, guacamole, and vegan cheese. I got it without the vegan cheese and asked to add the “pepita hummus,” hoping it was Sikil P’ak, which I love. They left off the pepita hummus so I never found out.
The beans were fine. The rice was fine. The pico was fine. But the veggies? Okay, let’s talk. They tasted good to start but there are a lot of vegetables one associates with Mexican food. I’m sorry, but Brussels sprouts are NOT one of them! 🤪 Like, zucchini, mushroom, corn, winter squash, absolutely. We could even get away with something that isn’t Mexican but works, like spinach or whatever. But the dish was like 40% Brussels sprouts! So while it actually tasted fine, it was baffling for sure. Kinda funny!
The guacamole on my bowl was weirdly warm and I didn’t eat it. It tasted like my dish had been under a heat lamp, guac and all, while my partner’s enchiladas were made.
My partner is vegetarian, not vegan, and got dairy enchiladas. He said his food was similar to mine in both quality and authenticity.
The place is cute. I sort of liked it. But I wouldn’t go out of my way for it, and my quest to find decent Mexican food ANYWHERE in New England sadly continues…. lol
EDIT: I realized after posting that I was actually at Diego’s Barrio Cantina, not this restaurant, but as they are under the same ownership I think the comments probably transfer for both places.

Not good - Edit
Ordered fried tofu tacos... Was told they're out of tofu so I asked for fried cauliflower (they had fried buffalo cauliflower on the menu.) Ended up with steamed cauliflower with buffalo sauce on it in the taco. It was disgusting.
Read moreThe Cali burrito was mostly just vegan beyond sausage. My $20 margarita was nasty; the charred tomato vinegarette was gross.
I'd rather get french fries than spend $100 on this crappy "vegan friendly" meal again.
Pros: Hostess was great
Cons: Food didn't taste good, Extremely expensive

Vegan menu but pricy - Edit
Love that they have a vegan menu with alot of options. Ordered street tacos, nachos and Cali burritos. It’s ok. Not the best. The nachos is pretty good. Highly recommend. The street taco is a little bland. I had street tacos that taste way better. The Cali burrito was not that good. The vegan cheese wasn’t melted. I had a Cali burrito before and it has some fries in the burrito but this one has a chunk of potatoes. Didn’t like it so we pack it home and put our own seasoning to make it taste better.

Tasty, relaxed Mexicam diner - great views from upstairs - Edit
Has a whole vegan menu - although no vegan puddings :-(
Read moreFriendly, tasty, relaxed.
Another review said it was noisy- we didn’t find it was - although there was definitely something up with the lights the night we went!
The roasted mushroom tacos are particularly good - although if you’re hungry, you’ll need to add a side.

We appreciated and used the vegan menu, and especially loved the fresh, tangy and/or smoky sauces for the tortilla chips! Fried tofu tacos also fresh and tasty, although could have been a bit spicier! Enchilada “dinner” also good.

Not many options - Edit
I’ve come to this restaurant a few times when in town and it’s not easy to find vegan options that are to my liking. It’s healthier than similar restaurants, but again not to my liking. The taste of the food is mostly good, but a bit hit or miss. The atmosphere is fun, but the music is always very loud and difficult to have a conversation.

two stars JUST because there’s a separate vegan menu - Edit
title speaks for itself but start to finish had one of the worst experiences with this restaurant. we ordered our food for takeout due to the noise factor mentioned in so many reviews. however, never got a confirmation or receipt and when picking up our order we were told it was never placed, despite bank statements confirming payment.
Read morethis little “hiccup” was not dealt with in a graceful manner when it came to the staff whatsoever. after being told 20 times that our order wasn’t in the system we asked for a refund and miraculously a staff member found our ticket, with the food not having yet been made. we then brought our food home and when opening our bag everything was cold.
then, everything tasted extremely bland to the point where i didn’t even want to take pictures of anything. tofu in the burrito wasn’t cooked, there was no seasoning or flavor in any of the dishes and for the amount of up-charges involved for the vegan choices vs the meat version…we were less than impressed. i think it’s great they have vegan options and everything is labeled but the food and service was overall terrible for us.
Pros: decently sized vegan menu
Cons: overpriced even for newport, food was very bland, poor service

Good Mexican food - Edit
The have a separate vegan menu which simplifies things. We ordered the vegan enchiladas - it was very tasty. Plenty of vegan cheese, refried beans, rice. It was a little pricey at $24 though. But what the heck - we were traveling on holiday. My wife had an arugula salad with corn & tofu that was $21. They play rockin' music like Black Sabbath, Ramones, New York dolls. Overall a good meal, and a nice break from walking around.

Wonderful food - Edit
My wife and I (both vegan) had lunch twice here with omnivore friends and we all loved the food. My wife and I both ordered the mini quesadillas so we could try both the mushroom and sausage options. They were both excellent, but the sausage was fantastic. On the 2nd visit, I had the dinner serving of vegan enchiladas, but I which I would have again in a heartbeat — very flavorful. My wife had the tostada and said it was very good. She also had the side of black beans, which were very simple and very tasty.
Read moreI appreciated that the staff really knew the vegan options. For example, that the enchilada green sauce couldn’t be used because it had dairy and that the green salsa in the four-salsa appetizer was different and was vegan.

Good food from a vegan menu - Edit
Enjoyed the whole experience. My husband and I ate at the upstairs bar. We asked for the vegan menu and were presented with a number of good-looking options. We split the guacamole/nachos appetizer followed by the mushroom & cauliflower quesadillas and a veggie burrito.....all were excellent! I had an Upgrade Margarita which was good-sized and tasty. Bartenders were personable and atmosphere was fun.

They have a vegan menu, which is amazing in newport. Many things on the menu are total hit, while others are a big miss.
Read moreDefinitely try their salsas and guacamole. Their chips are made in the same fryer as the meat items, which is gross (I think you can bring your own chips). If you can get over the chip thing - go for the loaded nachos with vegan sausage. It is awesome.
The veggie burrito is HUGE and oh so good.
The vegan street tacos are also good.
The 5th ward salad is super yummy.
They do take some walk-ins but the wait can be long, so make a reservation well in advance (especially in the summer).
The ambiance is very casual/California punk (no joke - they are the only restaurant I have been to with a play list that includes the Sex Pistols).
Eat outside if you can!

They now have a separate vegan menu! Some of the offerings include nachos, fried tofu tacos, “cheesy” fries, enchiladas, and quesadillas. They have vegan cheese, vegan sausage, and tofu in addition to typical vegan offerings (veggies, rice, beans, etc). The food was delicious and the restaurant is in a great location right by the water! Definitely worth checking out.

Lots of options, okay food - Edit
We were pumped to come to Diegos. Overall I would say the food is fair. They have a separate vegan menu and knowledgeable staff which is great in an area with almost no vegan options. While there are tons of options including loaded fries, quesadillas, tacos, and nachos, our food was just okay tasting-pretty bland. To be fair we only tried the tofu tacos and mushroom quesadilla which were pretty underwhelming in flavor-I don’t recommend them. We did get two drinks which were fantastic (margarita and mezcal mixed drink). The staff was very pleasant, attentive, and helpful. I would be willing to try them again. Prices are fair for the area and portion size.
