EXCELLENT PLACE.....WHEN OPEN - Edit
This review is for Duke Bullocks Vegan Café (formerly Calf Café) only and not the accomodation above the premises or Calf Sanctuary camping accomodation in Whitby.
Read morePROS
Good location in the centre of Scarborough.
The staff (the volunteers) are extremely warm, friendly, polite and helpful.
The food is fantastic and the portions very substantial.
Prices are reasonable.
CONS
The décor is, well, unusual.
The opening times are absolutely pathetic and extremely erratic. Usually Saturdays and Sundays only, 12 - 4pm, yes that’s only 8 hours per week! Even in high season 2018 no weekdays were included!
CONCLUSION
At the time of writing (August 2018), this is the only 100% vegan establishment in Scarborough. In the right hands, this could be a great little place for the vegan community. Unfortunately this café’s minimal opening times render it virtually useless.
The café is now closed completely for the foreseeable future. This is due to the owners’ ‘personal problems’.

Very fatty and sugary - Edit
This is one of these all-vegan places where I feel that the people running it are really passionate about veganism but do not really know how to prepare nice vegan food. The mains are all very fatty (burgers with fries and the like, with not much salad) and the cakes have outrageous amounts of sugar in it. Also, the heating in the store was turned on so high that I did not like the air in the place at all.
Read moreThere are not many other options in Scarborough so if you are in the mood for this kind of food you might still like it here.
Pros: all-vegan place in Scarborough

What a wonderful place, in a lovely town - Edit
There are few towns that have genuine ALL VEGAN Cafe's/ Restaurants. Scarborough is so lucky. This is run by lovely caring people, who know how to serve lovely food, suitable for anyone, and willing to make changes to suit people who have allergies or great dislikes of certain foods. A place you can take anyone to.

Fry up good - warm chocolate brownie with ice cream divine - Edit
I came here with some friends for some lunch. and had a vegan fry up which was fairly decent and filled the whole. A non-veg*n friend had the burger and said he made better veg*n burgers himself. The chocolate brownie afterwards was simply AMAZING and totally would come back for that.. Fairly well-priced. I give this 3 happy cows but I'm comparing it to places i know in more populous areas. I'd say relative to the local are this would be a 4 happy cows..

Lovely Vegan Cafe - Edit
We went to Calf Sanctuary Cafe for lunch, and was thoroughly impressed by the food. We had the mexican bean burger, as well as the 'chicken' burger, both of which were delicious, also couldn't resist having desert, which was rocky road and chocolate fudge cake!

Lovely Food - Edit
I stopped at Calf Cafe for lunch on a day trip to Scarborough, this is a lovely vegan cafe which also sells tshirts and other merchandise as well as some fab vegan munchies, I noticed they had Vego bars! I had the Full English which was tasty and filling, I couldn't resist vegan cake though and left absolutely stuffed after having hot chocolate fudge cake and cream. The cafe is dog friendly and my dog enjoyed a bit of veggie sausage too!

Chocolate fudge cake! - Edit
It's a really nice place, although it closes quite early also when we went there is was cash payment only! Apart from that the food was really good! We shared a 'pepperoni' pizza which came with some salad and it was enough for the two of us (well, maybe if you are super hungry it's only enough for one haha). We also shared a chocolate fudge cake, and omg, it tasted amazing! I highly recommend it! I also had a Banoffee coffee which was nice too, maybe a bit too sweet. The prices were really good as well!

Yummy - Edit
Amazing vegan cafe in former pub. I went on 23 September 2016, when it was open Fri, Sat & Sun 12-4. Not everything on the website menu was available (no waffles/crêpes). I had a walnut & almond burger with chips & salad, a banana milkshake to drink and for dessert a Rocky Road sundae (ice cream, chocolate biscuits, marshmallow). Other deserts included chocolate cake, hot fudge cake, Rocky Road slice raspberry ripple sundae. There were also rum & raisin peanut chocolates available to take away. It was wonderful to have such a great choice of vegan food.

Changing menus, wonderful food - Edit
Menu choices added nearly every week but maintaining popular vegan favourites. This cafe has been undergoing some transition over the past few months and is now coming out of a period of uncertainty about its future. Now albeit secured with the success of finding a new sanctuary forever home the cafe now has potential to lay down the framework to become a lasting entity in the area. Still wonderful food and a cheery smile and greeting. Wonderful atmosphere and great choices. Worth a visit by vegNs, veggie and on is alike. You'll not be sorry!!

Vegan delight - Edit
This was our second visit, the first time we grabbed a snack but this time I was determined to have a full meal as everything looked so appealing. I had the fish and chips as I've not eaten them in 20 years and thought it would be nice to try at the seaside. I wasn't disappointed, it was very tasty and huge portions although I still managed to cram in a cake.

Well worth a visit - Edit
We made a two hour car journey just to visit Calf and it was well worth it. The food is really good. We had parsnip & carrot burger with delicious "proper" chips and salad, bean chili pie with chips and salad and luxury raspberry hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows! The only snag was that following the generous portions of the main course and the hot chocolate, we couldn't finish our hot choc fudge cake with cream - this was beautifully presented but we forgot to take a photo of it.
Read moreA great advantage was being able to take our dogs into the cafe with us as usually we are restricted to chilly beer gardens or eating on the go!
The cafe is behind the main road opposite the sea front, which is very handy and it's a stone's throw from a car park! We walked off our food with a long trek along the beach with the dogs (make sure you visit the beach out of season if you have dogs, otherwise they are banned, booo). All in all I'd say, if you haven't been to Calf Cafe yet - what are you waiting for?!
Pros: Great food, Location, dogs allowed

Lovely gem on the North Yorkshire coast - Edit
How delighted we were to discover that there was such a great vegan place in Scarborough when we took a trip to the seaside this weekend. The weather wasn't great and it had just started to rain when we found CALF and what a lovely, friendly and cosy place it is!
Read moreThe food is delicious and the specials are particularly good value - my husband had a garlic based pizza, chips and salad and I have to admit I was a little envious. I did however enjoy my burger (there were four or five different ones to choose from including fake meat and bean-based varieties) and the chips were really good. The desserts all looked really good and we chose the chocolate fudge cake. It was easily one of the best vegan desserts I have ever tasted.
I will definitely come back when in the area - I just wish we lived closer!
Pros: Delicious food, Extensive choice, Heavenly desserts
Cons: A little cramped inside, Only one high chair available, Too far from my house!

Fantastic place - Edit
Easy to find, near to seafront. Unique and homely decoration, we spent half the time we were there looking around at all the objects on display.
Read moreMenu is huge! Definitely the most extensive menu I have ever seen since becoming vegan. It took some time for us to decide what to have. My daughter had a burger and fries and I had my first ever vegan omelette and home made chips. We both had the strawberry milkshake which was delicious. The food is cooked fresh but doesn't take too long to arrive. The portions are very generous, neither of us could finish the meal and had no room for pudding unfortunately as there were some delicious looking cakes and sundaes available. Prices are very reasonable and go towards supporting the animal sanctuary. My only disappointment is I live two hours away otherwise I'd be in here all the time. It really is a wonderful place and is in need of support, if you are in the area definitely give it a try.
Pros: Proceeds supports a sanctuary, Freshly cooked tasty meals, Excellent choice of food and drink
