Walk uphill for porridge - Edit
Despite the name, this branch of Bonjuk is not located directly next to the subway station and you have to walk uphill for a while. It is located in a red corner building, well visible from afar.
Read moreBonjuk specializes in Korean porridge (juk 죽). According to their own statement, the following dishes from the regular menu do not contain animal ingredients or wheat:
- Sweet Pumpkin Porridge (danhobak-juk 단호박죽)
- Red Bean Porridge (dongji patjuk 동지팥죽)
- Sweet Red Bean Porridge (danpatjuk 단팥죽)
- Black Sesame Porridge (heugimja-juk 흑임자죽)
- Pine Nut Porridge (jatjuk 잣죽)
- Mung Bean Porridge (nokdujuk 녹두죽)
- White Porridge (hwinjuk 흰죽)
The complimtentary side dishes, which are served along with each porridge, are not vegan - except for the watery radish kimchi (dongchimi 동치미)! If you don't eat meat, seafood or fish, it's best to say during ordering that you don't need to be served side dishes.
Generally, Bonjuk's porridges are a standard in Korea and accepted by young and old, particularly when one feels sick. Prices range around 10.000 KRW and serving size is filling.
I personally don't eat Juk regularly, but Bonjuk has been a reliable source for plant-based food when there were no other options.
