Truly amazing all-vegan diner with so many different options available. I got a burger with a root beer float that really blew me away. Great food with a sick atmosphere!

Cool spot, food quality mixed - Edit
Really cool building and interior vibe. Had pancakes, tofu scramble, sausage, potatoes. Pancakes were fantastic, everything else was a bit greasy, although the scramble had good flavor.

Best chk’n ever! - Edit
It might be that the Monday night kitchen crew is of a different caliber than other days or times of day, but if I am being totally honest, this visit was a mixed bag! We all got some version of chk’n sandwich. We all agreed the chk’n itself was the best we have ever had. But also, all the sandwiches were super dry. Like, you could barely tell there was BBQ sauce on the BBQ chk’n or ranch on the “regular” chk’n sammie. It was barely discernible as a smear on one side of the bun. So we had to ask for more sauce. The ketchup was strangely tangy and watery, as was the “vertical sauce”. We also got a brownie sundae. The peanut butter brownie was incredible. The ice cream was inedible. It was so flaky and icy, it crumbled when we tried to scoop it with a spoon. It was like someone scraped freezer burn off normal ice cream. Really strange! Regardless, we will definitely return whenever we are back in town.

Perfect Diner Comfort Food 😍❤️🤤 - Edit
Really friendly, attentive service. Amazing classic diner comfort food with actually tasty bottomless coffee. I always get The Mountain & it always hits the spot. Wish I could get my hands on their cheeze sauce recipe. Chickun & Biscuits is like nostalgic midwest greasy spoon vegan heaven. 10/10- so good, I bought merch 👍

Super cool and yummy - Edit
This place is amazing! Not only is it an old diner (with a working jukebox!!), the food and service are great as well! We had reubeun, dude cakes, mac and cheese and a chocolate shake. The dude cakes were unique, savory and enjoyable. The Mac and cheese was light on the cheese, which is how I prefer. No step to enter. ADA stall in gendered restroom.

Proof that Vegan can be Delicious! - Edit
Visited the Portland restaurant, and inside, it feels like an older diner (like an old Dennys)… AND it’s been elevated to be such a great vegan spot! Had the Reuben sandwich and Mac and cheeze, along with an immunity tea. Soooo wonderful! Will be returning!

Comfort food, comfortable spot - Edit
This place is adorable and Nick is a lovely, friendly server. The portions were huge and delicious and there's something for every palate. We got the dude cakes and the breakfast Mac and cheese. Both were excellent. There's a great takeout fridge with burritos, baked goods, and sauces. The thing I loved most was how little they changed of the original diner- you can sit at the counter in the original chairs and watch everyone's yummy looking food come through the window slot. There are big comfy booths for groups and a large, sunny meeting room for larger groups. There's a big jukebox in the corner and a comfortable retro air to the whole place. Can't wait to go back!

We got the PDX Cheeze Stake and B.B. Toast. Both were tasty. $17 for a sandwich, though... Not sure if it's *that* good.

best pancakes - Edit
there’s nothing quite like the diner experience, and the Vertical Diner captures it perfectly. Good food, all the comforts veganified. “The avalanche” is a quintessential diner dish with pancakes, tempeh bacon, tofu scramble, and home style potatoes. With kombucha on tap, what’s not to love? Also staff are so sweet, 10/10

Come for the decor/atmosphere - Edit
Wanted to love this place. Love the roadhouse/diner vibe. Ordered the famous Chickun tenders and biscuits. Overall very average. Biscuits bland and tough. Chickun tenders bready texture. Hash good. Not enough gravy (thin and probably made from a packet). Veggies under seasoned. Wanted the whole thing to be smothered in gravy. Don’t think I’d come back

Vertically Delightful - Edit
We loved eating here! Being able to have anything on the menu was a fun not oft experienced phenomenon. My kids were thrilled and my non-vegan hubby found food that he was okay with as well. Good food. Happy tummies.

A Vegan Greasy Spoon Delight - Edit
I keep reading about how cool this place is and today, I finally got a chance to go. I had read the menu ahead of time and couldn't stop thinking about the Dude Cakes. The idea of a gluten-free and vegan tempeh sausage stuffed pancakes smothered in gravy was too much for my big appetite to resist. This greasy spoon breakfast is what dreams are made of, but generally reserved for self described human garburators. (Ie people who have no eating restrictions.) The dish did not disappoint, it was delicious and incredibly filling. Despite being a big eater, I couldn't finish my plate.
Read moreMy date opted for something smaller and had the blue plate breakfast; a perfectly seasoned tofu scramble served with golden hashbrowns, toast, and jam for only $11.
This place has a warm and welcoming vibe. The staff were incredibly nice, and the service style seems to lend to the idea that they either do tip pooling or have an excellent working culture (or both). Everyone was smiling and attentive, ensuring a pleasant dining experience.
I would like to try some of their comforting blue plate specials like mac'n cheeze and mushroom "steak" n' fries, this spot is a must-visit. The generous portions, fair prices, delicious flavors, and warm, attentive service make it a place worth returning to.
Pros: Low prices , Vegan remakes of blue plate specials, Everything can be made gluten-free

Vegan diner food! - Edit
This was a good stop. A vegan, a pescatarian and an omnivore all left satisfied. We tried the tender tigers (buffalo) and they were super good. Not tender but crispy. Also very hot! They pour that sauce all over it. Get the sauce on the side for dipping so you can adjust how much you want. We also tried The Mountain with mushrooms, the PDX Cheeze Stake and the TBLAT. Everything was good. The Mountain was very flavorful and not dry! There was a delicious orange dipping sauce for the TBLAT. The Cheese Stake was the least flavorful of the three dishes and very messy. The iced chais were just okay for me but a hit with the others. Also shared a carrot cake, which was great. Would like to try more menu items!

Vertical Portland - Vegan diner - Edit
Like it's sister site in Salt Lake, vertical Portland doesn't deviate from the formula. All your favorite local diner food is here. Went on a Sunday morning so the team was pretty busy. Didn't get coffee order until after food had arrived. Needed to be a little patient with a busy Sunday morning crowd.

10 out of 10 every time, + diverse clientele - Edit
Great place to come solo (diner seating at the bar) or with friends (think old school, puffy vinyl booths). The food is fantastic every time. Service is friendly. And though Portland is a disproportionately white city, I’m pleased to see people of different races and ethnicities dining here. I think it has a very welcoming, wholesome vibe that makes everyone feel good. And there’s plenty of easy, free parking, which is always a draw for me. I love this place! (Favorites: Joaquin Phoenix lentil burger and crazy-beautiful side salad)
