Soooooo good!

This is now one of my favourite places in London. All vegan, reasonably priced and great decor promoting animal rights. We also enjoyed browsing the vegan recipes and animal themed books while we waited. My partner and I ordered the big breakfast with bacon to share. It was great and a nice big serving. You get 2 slices of toast with a really delicious vegan butter. The tempeh bacon was awesome as was the scrambled tofu. We also got a almond milk hot chocolate which was divine. I got a chai latte with soy milk which was good although they just used a chai tea bag and I would a chai powder (David Rio makes a vegan one), syrup or just fresh tea and spices. Great service. We wanted to try the croissants but they weren't going to be ready until after 12 so we want to come back to try them.

Pros: All vegan, animal rights themed, good prices. Open

Cons: None

Fun Funky Vegan Place in London

I had an early dinner here and while there are limited options, the burger and kale chips were tasty. I splurged and got a cookie to go for dessert. Not the healthiest food but a fun treat. It's in a funky part of Soho and the interior is definitely casual. The prices are good and the staff is friendly

Pros: Basic tasty vegan food, Funky decor , reasonable prices

Cons: very funky environment-not bad but just a heads up, not the healthies vegan food but still tasty

AMAZING!!

I went back to Vegan Hippo after not being there since mid-2016 and WOW was I blown away by the food! The jackfruit sandwich was the best one I've ever had and everything was absolutely delicious. They even had some really original drinks I've never seen before. And vegan croissants -- first time I've ever seen these anywhere! Highly highly recommend this place. I also love the ambience, including the decorations and lots of wonderful vegan books to read while you are there.

Pros: AMAZING FOOD!!!, Very reasonable prices, Lots of choices

Lovely place but lots of room for improvements

Myself and a friend popped into Vegan Hippo yesterday and found the experience slightly more stressful than expected, great selection of food but seemed like staff were quite stressed and confused, food was late and lots of orders were being forgotten. Also the animals for the table are a great idea but not very practical and there was a slight lack in communication. That being said we really enjoyed our food! (Jackfruit burger & a hotdog)

Pros: Lovely layout, Good food for lunch

Cons: Confusion and service speed

Good place

This is not the best restaurant I have eaten, my burger was good but my friend's wrap was really average. We found the prices to be a bit high for what it was.
Conclusion : good but a bit pricey for quantity.

Great breakfast!

I adore this place. The decor is so cute, and I loved it to death. It is all centered around cute animals, and even some funny, clever paintings. The full english breakfast is massive, and was very good. I actually ordered tempeh bacon, despite not liking tempeh (IDK why...), and it was incredible! The staff was great as well. Highly recommend this place for breakfast.

Pros: Central location , Inexpensive, Nice decor

Tasty snacks, great location

We got excellent (friendly and fast) service in this quirky cafe that should be easy to reach from any part of London. My jackfruit burger was delicious and came with home-made kale chips (i.e. kale crisped in the oven or a dehydrator).

As a greedy old vegan, I found my dinner a little small - maybe I should have ordered a salad as well - but it didn't matter because we went round to Yorica afterwards (Vegan Hippo does have some desserts but there were people waiting for tables so we thought we'd move on).

As a side note, I found it interesting that the management has decided not to accept the new non-vegan fivers but is OK with giving them out in change. A more effective protest might be to take them to a bank and swap them for something else?

Anyway, great place and we hope to come again.

love the jack fruit burger!

I usually come here once a week to get myself and colleague lunch. We have both had the jackfruit burger which is really tasty and I have had the other burgers and hot dog which were both great! I have only given 5 stars as I am not keen the kale chips, sorry would prefer frys. But the burgers are really tasty and love the coleslaw!

Pros: burgers

Cons: not keen on the kale chips, please do frys?

Although the menu isn't the largest in variety the food is excellent quality and priced like a Northern Yorkshire mining town not central London!!! Love it love it love it. Will be back again tomorrow for breakfast!

Cheap and cheerful hearty vegan food

I've been here twice now as the location is so centrally located (right in the heart of soho) and the food is hearty and very cheaply priced for London. Great when you need to grab a quick bite in town. They also allow dogs in the restaurant which is always helpful.

They do a nice full english with tofu scramble which is very filling but I think could be improved if they used a nicer quality of bread. I had some kind of seitan wrap or tofu wrap and kale chips the last time which were both great. It's like a healthier vegan greasy spoon cafe. Nice atmosphere, plenty of seating and the staff are super friendly.

Pros: Filling, Cheap, Amazing location

Cons: Food isn't the best but good for the price

Mediocre

Very busy, and small space. We had the jackfruit burger and the pumpkin burger. The jackfruit burger was my first one, and it was okay. It was too soft, and after one bite half my burger was outside of the bun. Jackfruit burgers might usually be too sweet, but I would call this more of a sloppy joe style burger, where most of the contents end up on the plate. Although it came with kale chips, the price was too high for what we got. Pumpkin burger was decent but nothing memorable, and didn't come with a side.

Delightful centrally located vegan cafe

The reviews I've read on this site for veggie cafes & restaurants have usually been pretty accurate, and they've helped me so much to maintain a healthy and varied diet when I'm touring in different cities. Because I travel a lot for work, I rely a lot on the threads posted on sites like this by fellow vegans, so as I've got the evening free now I thought that I would contribute my own review for the benefit of other vegans living in London or travelling through.

First of all I was so lucky to find this amazing and unique little cafe. After getting carried away on my day off and spending hours in the British museum just down the road, I was totally starving and wandering around for ages trying to find some decent and reasonably priced food. You'd think that wouldn't be too difficult in a city the size of London, but I wasn't gonna pay £7 for a slice of soggy pizza or a dodgy looking falafel from one of the dives around Leicester Square or Piccadilly Circus.

Thankfully, as I was just about to pick up a sandwich and head back to my hostel I came across some 10% off flyers for the vegan Hippo. The cafe was quite busy inside (which is always a good sign) but fortunately the crowd dispersed shortly after I arrived.

I was really happy with the pumpkin burger and fresh carrot juice that I had. I was in this place for about an hour and a half and I could've stayed longer because I kept being charmed by the animal figures dotted everywhere. The interior is reminiscent of a farmyard, which works really well. Other aspects inside were thoroughly delightful too, with beautiful wooden features and bright colours that matched the personalities of the staff (they were all wearing orange).

If you're a veggie living in London and haven't visited this cafe yet then I suggest you give it a try. Hopefully a few more good reviews might help them to compete with some of the other less cosy places nearby

Joseph

Pros: 10% discount flyers

Cons: Should stay open later

Great Vegan Spot in London

I was so happy to find a vegan restaurant in London that was in walking distance to my hotel. The place is very cute and in a great location! The only suggestion I have is to expand the breakfast menu. But the food and vegan hot chocolate was perfect!

Nice breakfast place

I'm referring to the breakfast only because I visited just once, in the morning, and so had breakfast there...

Their full English breakfast was okay, but the tofu scramble was overly salty in one of our dishes (although not in the other), and it would have been nice to have some jam with the toast.

The atmosphere was cozy and I liked the fact that they have a good selection of animal-related books on the window seat. Could be nice browsing material for people visiting on their own.

Pros: cozy ambiance, friendly staff

Visit to see for yourself

Very interesting decor and simple but filling food. I had a pumpkin burger and it was simple but nice. Hotdogs could be better. The coffee cup was large. The place itself is quite small with some outdoor seating. Food arrived really quickly. Staff seem to work incredibly hard, the whole place is like a vegan haven.

Pros: Ethos, Decor, Large hot drinks

Cons: Could seem cleaner/fresher, No fries!

Quick Service

I ate at Vegan Hippo this week and was expecting a long wait for food after reading some of the reviews on Happy Cow. The food came to my table within a couple of minutes of ordering, even though it was lunchtime and already very busy. The jackfruit burger was quite tasty, although I was surprised to find it served in a fairly tough white bap - wouldn't wholemeal be a bit more fitting? Accompanying kale crisps were very nice. The overall value for money wasn't great, but this is central London, ain't it?

Had the Gyros Wrap which was delicious! Serving was a bit small for how much I paid for it. But the size of the hot chocolate I received made up for it!

Do not miss this wonderful vegan restaurant!

This is a wonderful place! The food is amazing, the staff is lovely, and the ethical undergirding of the restaurant is exactly what vegans are looking for. Read their website and you will know the way in which this restaurant honors animals. My husband and I who have been vegans since 1991 and 1990 respectively, went to this totally vegan restaurant three times in a five day period. Twice for breakfast and once to take out food for our plane ride back from holiday in London. It was so great to have a traditional English breakfast that was completely vegan and it was such a huge meal. My spouse had the jackfruit burger, which was delicious. He also had the gyro and the hot dog. I had the wonderful carrot cake which was so delicious. In addition, take out all salami and cheese and ham and cheese sandwiches were terrific. If you are traveling to London or you live there, do visit this place. It is not to be missed. It is also reasonably priced.

Pros: Delicious , Big Portions, Friendly staff

Disappointing

Okay to Vegan Hippo gets points just for being vegan, but I couldn't find much to recommend it aside from that. As a shop, it's fine for picking up the few things that it has (Violife, cakes, sweet treats, ice cream). The food from the cafe is lacklustre to say the least. We got the tofu scramble (bland mess and looked disgusting) and the gyro (soya pieces okay, but the the wrap was dried out, it was just all a bit sad looking). I must say the kale that came with the gyro was the star of the show. Absolutely delicious.

It's a shame. I took my meat eating mum and it's a shame to get such disappointing food because it makes it harder to convince people that bring vegan is awesome!
