Good prices! - Edit
I don't live near Trader Joe's, but I often stop by when I am in the neighborhood of one. The prices are great. They have a huge selection of food, including produce and many of their own brand of items. In addition to fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans, downstairs in this store they have a number of vegan frozen food items. Trader Joe's tends to be healthier and have many more vegan items than a typical grocery store, though somewhat less so than one would find in a really good health food store.

Some vegan hard-to-finds - Edit
One of the only places in the city to find Miyoko’s new vegan lox cream cheese. Also great snacks like crunchy okra.

the cheapest spot in NYC - Edit
TJs has been a go to of ours for years. We were really happy when we came to the city and there was one within reasonable accessibility. The selection of vegan and vegeteratian options are innumerable and at great prices. Two set backs are that the place gets ridiculously busy with lines wrapping through out the store (you will soon learn to shop on line) and the other disappointment is how quickly the produce goes bad, organic or not. Yes, it's definitely cheaper than other spots but when you load up for the week you expect for it to stay fresh. Additionally it's important to note that they do sell beer and it's quite thrifty!

Shining Star Supermarket - Edit
I frequently shop at Trader Joes a upscale, supermarket chain in Manhattan. From the moment you walk through the door, you are greeted with happiness. The y make you feel like the workers actually want to be there. From gluten free pasta to the meatless meatballs, you name it, they have it. There is a wide variety of vegan essentials.
