so many options - Edit
This restaurant has so many choices on one menu. Typically, I have to go to five different restaurants to find my staples, but they had them all! The wings, “mozzarella” sticks, and pancakes were amazing!

I’ve never been somewhere with so many options. They have more menu items than I’ve had an opportunity to try, but so far my favorites are their breakfast. I love their vegan waffle. And the Benedict is amazing.

Dirty Bird FTW - Edit
My boyfriend and I came here after getting in from our hometown in Austin. We were excited to try the all vegan cafe, since we have a few in Texas we’re fans of. I also have to agree with a previous reviewer that sometimes all vegan places suffer from vegans overhyping it just because it’s all vegan, and that sometimes it can be lack luster. I would say Wayward falls in the middle - not the absolutely best in terms of flavor always being there, but you could do a lot worse.
Read moreI’ll also add it’s nice to have a place where you can really “pig” out on foods places normally don’t make vegan - thinks like fried mozzarella, mac n cheese, etc if you want to.
We got the Loaded Mac n Cheese to start and it was really good. For our meals, he got the Dirty Bird and I got the Burger Queen Crunch Wrap. The BQCW was okay- the “burger” they use is very gummy and was slightly disappointing given how many good vegan burger patty options there are now. However, get the Dirty Bird when you go!! Their biscuits are fantastic and whatever the faux meat they use for their “chicken” was not gummy at all, really crispy outside and done super well. I may or may not have eaten his meal instead of mine. 🙃

Underwhelmed - Edit
Maybe it’s just because I’m spoiled with delectable vegan goodness everywhere in Portland but this place tasted like what omnivores describe what they *think* vegan food tastes like (which is tasteless cardboard), very disappointing and downright disgraceful. Puts a bad taste in my mouth. I had hoped the food would be delicious because the menu was tempting but I don’t think I’ll come back here.. step it up, Wayward! You’re giving vegans a bad name.

This place is over rated and everything tastes like plastic. I couldn’t even finish my burger. Will not return.

so freaking good - Edit
Do yourself a favor and get the French toast sticks (on the appetizer section of menu). The Mac daddy burger is delicious, big portion. Wish they had milkshakes cause nothing’s better than fresh fries and burger with a milkshake. Other than that, all the food I’ve had there is supreme. I bring all my non vegan friends here and they love it too

So many options! :) yum! - Edit
The menu is huge with breakfast, lunch, dinner & dessert items. Many are heavy and greasy, but there are also light & healthy options. The pancakes are so great, & the French ticklers, so is the chick’n & waffles, and I love Biscuit Mountain. The burgers are so yummy, I love the Sweet Dream burger & the Wayward burger. If you love fake meat & cheese then you will love it here. They have two types of gravy, lots of sandwiches and entrees, salads, and lots of breakfast & brunch foods! Tofu scramble and home fries are yummy! You can ask for chocolate almond milk for your coffee! Score!
Read moreThe portions are a good size and decent prices. It gets busy on weekends so you may have to wait a bit to be seated. This food is like traditional American food but you leave feeling good, instead of feeling like your heart will stop from the sludgy animal fat & animal protein.
-The Bloody Mary is so awful, all my friends agreed, so don’t bother, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Pros: huge menu-many choices, all vegan, good service
Cons: bad Bloody Mary cocktail

All vegan menu. Average+ food. Average service. - Edit
Obviously this place gets an extra star from me for a big all vegan menu. Whether I like it or not, I do get very excited when I get to pick from a huge menu! But the food was just okay. I tried the appetizer sampler. The funny thing about the drumsticks was that I had just bought a pack of drumsticks from vegan haven store that I think were exactly what was served here. I also had the alfredo pasta which was good. The garlic bread was also pretty good. For the service, I was a little disappointed by something that happened. The server dropped a celery stick from our plate on the floor which is fine. She picked it up and just took it away. Its not a big deal but I would have liked a simple "would you like some extra celery" to replace the stick. Now, I dont care about a stick of celery but it just showed careless attitude which bothered me a little.

Mini Mistakes - Edit
This is a small, but cute and eclectic space with clean bathrooms. It is family owned and all vegan. I order the "Dirty Bird" and a tea. My waiter was really nice. A couple of mistakes...there was a pice of hair in my tea cup...I think this can happen, even with precautions, but I would have hoped that for the inconvenience that they would have taken it off my bill...the manager is the one that should have made that call. After I paid my bill I received the wrong a out of change...about $4 short, again, this was an opportunity for the manager to earn a customer.
Read moreI decided to give them another chance and ordered the "Chicken & Waffles" and asked for butter and syrup. They forgot the butter. Though these are small mistakes, I know I would be frustrated if I returned for more mini/many mistakes.
Pros: Friendly Wait Staff, Clean Bathroom, Good Biscuits
Cons: Too Many Mistakes, No Parking, Small Facility

Extremely underwhelming - Edit
I guess my review is probably gonna upset some people but this place just really wasn't good. Sometimes I feel like all-vegan restaurants' reviews suffer from "overexcited vegans syndrome" wherein we undeservedly rate a place high marks because it's so unusual and gratifying to see an entire menu of vegan food before us. I definitely get that sense with this eatery.
Read moreI had some serious complaints about Wayward Vegan Cafe though.
-Daiya cheese used in everything. I'm so not impressed by places just swapping out dairy cheese for Daiya. It tastes processed and bad, and in 2017, places should be able to use a better homemade alternative.
-The service was terrible. We were one of only three seated tables in the place and waited 30 minutes just to place our order, while our waiter was cleaning the windows. Then the appetizer and entrees came out at exactly the same time.
-They don't even know how to cook or clean vegetables properly. Side of kale arrived overcooked to mushiness, yet also inedible due to huge thick stems left on the leaves.
-Dishes are not thoughtfully constructed. Tater tot burrito desperately needed freshness or acidity to balance the tater tots and creamy sauce. Alfredo needed a touch of lemon. Chickun club sandwich was chewy on creamy on rich. I get that this is a comfort food place, but that doesn't mean we should sacrifice sound cooking principles.
-Tater tots were clearly frozen and reheated. French fries were soggy. If you're going to base your menu around items like this, prepare them correctly.
All told, I didn't eat anything that I would be excited to go back and eat again, and I had to wait a very long time for no reason, so I'm giving this place the lowest possible rating, which is 2 stars because it's an all-vegan joint.
Pros: Vegan
Cons: Food is not fresh or homemade, Food is not tasty or balanced in flavors, Service is not good

Quality Greasy Spoon Diner with Touch of Kale - Edit
I dined at Wayward when it occupied a distinctively goth-punk storefront on the Ave. Having graduated to a two-story, comfortable corner location near I-5, it enjoys greater visibility but has kept true to its mission. I particularly like the Warlock with a side of the consistently most beautiful and tasty steamed kale I have ever eaten. My only criticism is that my last time there, I ordered a meal to go only to be refused the right to sit at the counter when I changed my mind and asked if I could eat one of the dishes there. I even agreed to purchase a drink and consume the beverage on-site but was still told that I could not eat the to-go order.

The menu is extensive arrived for dinner and ordered the lost scramble that contained beautiful veggies soft tofu and curry oh the curry also some steamed greens with sesame seed and I substituted for one of their well-known biscuits. It came with some jam our amazing friendly sincerely sweet server recommended. I was shaking my head in amazement and the taste of this dish. Mom ordered Mac cheese and bacon burger with fries. I tried some and although it's not something I'd ever ordered it tasted great and she loved it. The love of my life ordered the dirty bird Crisp faux chicken over biscuits with an agave spice syrup and this was a wow for us as well! Coke Zero on tap is free refills the restaurant has a casual eclectic vibe and the service was flawless and they supported my 2 year old and even brought him toys to play with! For dessert we had a slice of jodees vegan pumpkin cheesecake

Sad - Edit
I tried to give a 1 star but it would only let me do a 2 for whatever reason. We travel all over for vegan food save your money and go to pizza pi. It was created by the same people and is amazing. We had the California crunch wrap and potato pancakes that we had a few bits of and couldn’t dream of eating the rest. This made me sad

casual place, great food, not too pricey. The desserts are particularly good, the cooks are also good at using cheese and potatoes. Some of the sandwiches have mediocre bread that makes them worth avoiding, but most of the menu is good.

American Diner with bigger menu better quality and 100% vegan - Edit
All vegan american diner food greasy and amazing. I've gotten thet biscuit mountain and the club sandwich each 3 times becauset they're so good I didn't want to get anything else. Finally I tried the philly cheesesteak and chicken waffles. philly was amazing the chiggen was bland but still fine. Also the cinnamon rolls are amazing. Only problem with this place is that there are so many options and they all sound amazing so you have to go several times!

It was great to see whole menu vegan. Staff were friendly. They don't do real coffee just American diner coffee. Portions large. We enjoyed our breakfasts, it was diner-type food if that makes sense though. Pancakes very fluffy and nice and they use a nice vegan cream. Too full for lunch afterwards!
