When you think about Middle Eastern food, what comes to mind? Falafel? Hummus? Don't get me wrong, I LIKE this stuff, but basically, it's all the same— but fear not! Stamford has a low-profile (but easy to find) Middle Eastern restaurant that is completely non-traditional, with a good range of vegetarian options— and even some vegan offerings— that are sure to please. My wife & I have been toe The Fez several times (September 2014 most recently), and found that although everything ordered was good, the quality had slipped somewhat from our last experience there almost one year back.
Recommended were the Pizzet Aroub(V), Crisped Chickpeas & Okra, Carmelized Cauliflower, Fingerling Potatoes Comfit, Mushroom Cap Soup(V), Moroccan Harira Soup(V), and Veggie Zaelouk. These are "small plates", and are moderately priced— some of the larger main courses exceed the $15 mark, but these have more limited options for vegetarians. For dessert, their Coconut Sorbet is "to die for".
Service is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is classy without being stuffy, but casual attire is certainly suitable. On weekends, there is live (piano) music which is not overbearing, although the place isn't large by any measure— and it can get crowded. There is a full bar. DO make reservations. They don't seem to advertise, but people know what's good, and the word is definitely out. Parking in downtown Stamford can be problematic, but there are always options. If I could assign half-stars (or half-"cows") I'd give it a 3½ star rating, but it's still closer to "Good" than "OK".
