Vegan tasting menu!!

This place has a lot of well-deserved accolades. I’ve been a few times and enjoyed the on-menu vegan options, but the tasting menu inspired me to write a glowing recommendation! The menu says ‘no modifications,’ but the bartender recommended it and stated that the only changes to the vegetarian menu would be to omit a poached egg on one dish and use their vegan caramel in place of honey on the dessert so don’t be shy to ask for it! For a coursed dinner the portion sizes were huge (pace yourself and get boxes) but the timing wasn’t precise like Freya or Mabel Grey. This was significantly less expensive so a worthy trade off - you’re getting a delicious dining experience rather than a fancy one. The drinks were great, the atmosphere is cool-casual, and the location lends itself to (relatively) available parking for Corktown. If you can’t get a reso, they also have a patio

Extraordinary food — can’t miss it!

Fantastic experience! The food is AMAZING. Every single dish we had was bursting with perfectly balanced flavors. The mix of textures, colors, and ingredients in every dish made our meal a beautifully curated culinary delight from start to end. Every dish was incredible, so it’s hard to pick favorites, but the pepper tofu, cabbage, and ice cream dessert were my personal favorites. I’d return for any of those in a heartbeat. Probably the best Thai restaurant I’ve ever been to. I’d highly recommend a meal here. It’s worth going out of your way for.

Pros: Delicious food, Clearly labeled vegan options, Many vegan options

Gentle, creamy & sour flavors

I had the Tom Kha Ramen, which was a sour coconut ramen with various toppings including fried tofu, sliced red peppers, and enoki (?) mushrooms. This is definitely one of my favorite things to eat in Detroit especially after a long day. I was a little worried about the sourness, but the flavors were more mild and it was not overpowering at all.

The noods themselves were so nostalgic to noods from ramen cups at home, but also were elevated to fit this restaurant. They had the right chewiness and the portionssss! I feel like I finally had the right noodle to broth portion for once. And like a true (south)Asian, I bought some rice on the side for the leftover broth and I was left satisfied and stuffed. I had the sticky rice to switch things up a little and it was a fun experience.

It was decently priced as well, $18 for the ramen and $3 for sticky rice. I unfortunately was not able to have the coconut ice cream and I died inside when I saw that they were sold out. ;-; but it’s okay, the ramen was delectable.

Delicious!

Every dish we had from here was so tasty. Their salads were flavorful and some of them had quite a kick! Prepare to have room for some water. The flavors do remind me a lot of when I visited Vietnam and all the street food there, like the mango salad and sticky rice in a bag.

Highly recommend getting their tasting menu to experience most of their menu with someone. We left feeling full and happy, and those drinks were potent 🍹

SO VERY IMPRESSED

My only disappointment with Takoi is that it took me years to finally go eat there.
We were able to walk in and eat here without a reservation on a Friday night - bar seating and patio seating were available. Service was enthusiastic and I enjoyed the fun lighting.
There were lots of vegan options. I loved that Takoi went all in by doing dishes vegan, which encompasses vegetarian but doesn't leave vegans out, rather than when restaurants focus on making vegetarian dishes that can be made vegan by sacrificing important parts of the dish.
We had the coconut cakes as an appetizer, and what sweet little treats! When I first bit into them, I enjoyed the sweetness, but what really made these excellent is the slow creep of the chili oil. Next we had the green curry with sticky rice and the maitake mushrooms. The fried squash that came in the green curry was phenomenal - I don't know how they got these things to melt in my mouth like that. The green curry was deeply flavorful, and the golden raisins were a unique and welcome addition. The maitake mushrooms were a weaker dish, but excellent nonetheless. The mushrooms had the perfect char, and were beautiful to look at. But after the deep complexity of the green curry, the mushrooms could not compete. For dessert, we had the vegan ice cream sundae and oh my godd it was top tier vegan ice cream. It was fluffy and creamy and rich - truly this is the ice cream vegans deserve. The sundae contained caramel and some sort of Mango syrup along with nuts and lime zest.
We can't wait to go back. I'm planning on making a reservation for the end of this month, and look forward to having this meal in the dining room where we'll be able to watch the food be prepared in the open kitchen. I'm so excited to try more of the dishes at Takoi!

5 stars

Amazing food! So glad I stopped here. Was wanting drunken noodles, and this place didn’t have that, but I took a chance based on the other review. I’m so glad I did! The flavors were so complex! I had the broccoli dish, and it was garlicky, lemony, spicy, creamy - all the good things! Go here.

One of my absolute favorites!

Takoi isn't like any run of the mill American Thai restaurant (and deserving of 5 stars). The atmosphere is cool and intimate. Their food is inventive and the flavors are wonderfully complex. Excellent drinks as well. Check out their menu and you'll see for yourself, it's outstanding, absolutely worth a visit.
