Lovely cafe with friendly, accommodating staff and delicious tofu! - Edit
This shop just opened up and it is located in Anmon Green Village, right near the World Heritage Site Shirakami-Sanchi.
Read moreThe inside of the cafe is very spacious and comfortable. We were happy that it opened so early (10:30) because we were hungry after hiking all morning!
Before going, I reached out to the owner via instagram and asked whether they could accommodate vegans. She told me that their food is mostly plant-based but some of the condiments could contain fish stock or egg (also some of their desserts contain egg/dairy). She said that they could make it without using those condiments, but then the flavor might be bland so she advised me to bring my own soy sauce to use.
So, I brought my own soy sauce. When I arrived I told the staff that I was vegan. He was a young man (perhaps the son of the owner?) who apparently has been abroad before and understands veganism. He told the owner/chef and she said that today's lunch includes tempura, but that the tempura batter might include egg. So, she offered to fry the vegetables without using batter (素揚げ - "suage"). Everything was delicious! The fried veggies had the perfect amount of salt and were nice and crispy. I used my soy sauce on the tofu-don as advised by the staff and it was very good! The pickles and miso soup were good too.
After lunch, we ordered dessert. There were 5 kinds of dessert, but 3 of them (all kinds of cake) had dairy/eggs. So we ordered the Tofu Shiratama dessert and the Taiwanese 豆花 (toufa). We also ordered Iced Matcha with Soy Milk and Iced Coffee with Soy Milk. The desserts and drinks were not very sweet, so if you are someone who likes very sweet things, I wouldn't recommend them. Or perhaps you could bring your own sweetener to add if you wanted!
It's so nice (and rare!) to have a vegan option way out in the mountains like this. Although the shop is not 100% vegan, we really appreciate their willingness to accommodate us and we will definitely be back!
Pros: Delicious tofu, Staff understands veganism, nice atmosphere, location
Cons: need to bring your own soy sauce, some items are not vegan, so you must confirm, can be crowded at peak hours
