Unique delicious delights! - Edit
Updated April 2025: I'm only recommending Planta (Planta Bethesda) because it is a fully plant-based restaurant. That is always a bonus for vegans and those who eat a plant-based diet. In the past, I have had many, many other positives to share about this restaurant. But my most recent visit (April 2025) was disappointing as compared to my visits in the past (see my rave review below from one year ago!). I was hoping for chick'n and waffles, which I have had in the past (and felt was a restaurant staple, like something they were known for offering). Not so it seems. The new menu change was disappointing. (At least they still offer bang bang broccoli.) I ordered the chick'n sandwich and was told by the waiter that it was "the same" chick'n as the chick'n & waffles but that was not the case at all. The minute I took one bite, I knew it was Meati (mushroom based chick'n patty). I love Meati, don't get me wrong, but it is a far cry from a homemade fried trumpet mushroom, which I was expecting. Packaged vegan meat product? At Planta?? Really? The waiter seemed under-informed, was doing his best, but clearly did not know the previous menu nor did he know specifics about the current offerings. I'm not sure I'd make a special effort to go back, but will keep an eye on the menu- hoping to see some of the great dishes of the past return!
Read moreWhenever I'm in the DMV, I always plan ahead as far as the vegan spots I'd like to try. It's such a pleasure to have lots of fine choices, but lately Planta has been top on my To Try list! I recently had the pleasure of visiting their Bethesda, MD location and let me just say, it is worth the trip!! I wish I lived closer, because this would be my weekly go-to dinner date spot! We arrived just as they opened at 11:30 a.m., and we were seated immediately. The server was kind enough to help us out, as we explored the menu and tried to decide which items we'd like to try on our very first visit. There are so many amazing dishes that all I can say is, I'll be back! Five stars all the way around. Well worth the price (and we certainly took leftovers back to the hotel with us!). If you're a vegan foodie, this is the place you want to visit the next time you're in the DMV!!

Planta is awesome - Edit
The variety and the presentation of the menu items. Great waiter and fast service. My server Moe offered good menu items as this was my first time. Moe was informative. I recommend the Bang bang Brocoli, The lettuce wraps and Bao slider. I also had a delicious drink, a cucumber mule non-alcoholic.

terrible service - Edit
I have been there several times over the years, and their one redeeming quality is delicious food. But the service is slow and apathetic. On my latest visit, my friend and I had our appetizers and our entrees before the drinks were even delivered. It was midday and the restaurant was only half full. They completely forgot to bring another drink. I asked two different servers and found out it was delivered to the wrong table. Our server never followed up. I spoke to the manager and she was not that sympathetic. Our desserts took about 25 minutes to arrive. So if you don't mind really slow, unreliable service but want good food, go there. The food is delicious but is it worth the wait?

The food is outstanding, a huge menu including creative Asian-inspired flavors and classic comfort food dishes. Service is very casual, and hit or miss.

Nice but too frilly - Edit
The food, while small portions, was good. It was a tad too pretentious for me, but glad to see a full house.

The food was great! The service was lovely! The atmosphere was upscale yet down to earth. Everything was yum. We liked the cookie over the brownie but both were delish!

Excellent asian fusion options - Edit
Will seldom complain about a fully plant based restaurant, especially one that has a gigantic and delicious Asian fusion and Italian menu. In my opinion, the Asian options edge out the Italian, but that's a matter of preference.
Read morePersonal top options are the torched and pressed sushi (smokey, chewy sushi of avocado and truffle oil), bang bang broccoli, bao sliders, and dumplings (all of them!).
I've yet to try a cocktail I didn't love, but some favorites are lych please (mild lychee flavor) and herb your enthusiasm for a little kick.
On top of all that, good vibes and people!

Mohammed and Mariano behind the bar are so funny, engaging, and helpful. The cocktails/mocktails are unique and the food is superb. I can’t say enough good things.

Loved it! - Edit
We had a terrific meal! Bang bang broccoli was a tempura fried broccoli with a great spicy sauce. Vodka pizza was perfect and the spaghetti carbonara was smoky and delicious.

Lots of yummy options! - Edit
My husband, who we refer to as a taco-bell-atarian, took me here and we BOTH loved it! Here's what we got!
Read moreSCORTCHED AND PRESSED ROLL- 5 stars! We loved this!
DRAGON ROLL - 5 stars! This was SO good! Hubs said it tastes very close to the real thing. I have never liked sushi, but I could eat 3 of these
HOT CRAB ROLL - 1 star, not good at all. We both struggled to finish the first and only pieces we each took.
SPICY TUNA ROLL - 3 stars. Better than the Crab roll but not for me. Hubs liked it more but preferred the first two.
SPICY CHORIZO PIZZA - 4 stars, I really loved this but it was Spicer than I would have liked and the hot honey dupe through me for a loop. I'd definitely order again, but I might ask for red pepper on the side.
MEZ-CAL ME MAYBE - yummy, sweet, and smokey cocktail. Little small for the price though
The service was FANTASTIC! Our server was kind, attentive, and chill. There's no pressure to hurry up or like we were taking up space. We even added more sushi rolls to our order halfway through the meal and they didn't flinch, came out in a flash!
Highly recommend A we'll be back again! (Sorry no pictures, we were hungry!)
Pros: Service was great! , Innovative plant based dishes, 100 plant based, so no worrying about mistakes
Cons: Hot Crab roll

Nice vegan tapas - Edit
Nice setting, friendly staff and good amount of choices to try out a variety of flavors. Mushroom chickn on bao buns, cauliwings, sushi & pizza were delicious! The broccoli bang bang & potatoes caviar were just ok. Expensive but a nice treat for a special occasion. Forgive my pics, we kept forgetting to get immediate captures so took what we had left!

Delicious upscale vegan - Edit
I miss going to upscale vegan restaurants, and in the DC area, this is one of the best ones around. The menu is obviously plant based, and it is lovely. It does not disappoint. However, be warned to match the location and the upscale quality of the dining experience, the prices are hefty.
Read moreWe ordered a whole bunch of sushi and a pizza, and the price was equivalent to a grocery store visit for about a week's supply of food! Still, you can't replace the experience of high quality vegan food.
People definitely love going here for the sushi and pizza, so, well, that's what we did. There aren't enough good things to see. Torched and pressed sushi? Yummy avocado and rice with extra flavor. Baked crab roll - no seaweed in it, but quite delicious. Dragon roll has spinach inside and avocado on the outside - very yummy, but also no seaweed. The Crispy Rice roll also has avocado and of course, a nice crisp rice component. Loved them all, but, there was not enough kick to the wasabi or enough pickled ginger.
The pizza flavor for the vodka pizza was awesome. It looked beautiful, too. Would order any of the pizzas again in a heartbeat.
Food was amazing. Loved it! Save your dollars for this restaurant - it's worth it!
Pros: Sushi, Pizza, All vegan
Cons: Seaweed in sushi not really happening here, Need more desserts

What happened to planta 😢 - Edit
I used to think this was the epitome of fine dining but I think they got lazy. The food is barely edible now. I’ve been a superfan of bang bang broccoli since the beginning, but lately the flour is so undercooked, it’s chewy. So bad. So sad. Get it together.

Always a bonus to have an entire vegan menu. Does seem pricey, but it is Bethesda. Portion size is ok. Really liked the pizza and Inari. Salads are disappointing.

We got the bang bang broccoli which was the best thing we tried, and then the bao slider and the "spicy" creamy rose pasta. It was overall fine - but not what I expected given the hype

I love Planta - Edit
Happy that Planta is expanding locations, but they need to tighten up with consistency. I ordered the same 2 dishes 2 different times earlier this year and they came out differently each time. The first time was great and as expected! Just like the original South Beach location in Miami. The second time the seasonings and flavors were off on both and made them inedible. I contacted them about the issue and how I could not eat the dishes (was a pick up order). Thankfully, they provided me with a credit because it was quite upsetting, especially for how expensive they are. I took pictures of the dishes the first and second time I got them and you can visibly see how they are different. They said they followed up with the kitchen staff about it to correct going forward. When I ordered one more time after, it came out good but almost no seasoning.

nice date spot - Edit
This restaurant is a bit pricy ($18 for a Cesar salad?) but the ingredients are fresh and all the food tasted fantastic (minus the inari, that tasted too salty and bitter). The watermelon “tuna” in the spicy tuna roll was awesome! Probably my favorite dish there so far.
Read moreThe inside is very trendy and nice for a date. It’s also located in a cute part of Bethesda with lots of little shops, if you want to walk around before or after dinner.
Some of the waiters were friendlier than others. The staff seemed weirdly obsessed with removing plates and glasses from the table, so they frequently interrupted our conversation and a couple times tried to take away food we were still eating.
Pros: delicious food, high quality ingredients
Cons: pricy, staff tries to take plates before you’re done

Mmmmm-amazing food - Edit
I’ve been to planta a few times and everytime it’s so delicious! The atmosphere is beautiful and the staff is super helpful and polite. Even when I’ve had to wait for food at times they will comp it on our bill. I also love their alcohol free cocktails which are so refreshing, the cucumber mule is my favorite. Yesterday when I went we ate the bao buns, the torched and pressed sushi (the truffle is strong with this one), the spicy chorizo pizza and the seasonal pea fetuchini. My partner said the fetuchini was the “best pasta dish he’d had from any restaurant in years!” And I’d have to agree I hope they put it on their full time menu but I understand, oooo those spring peas, nothing like them. The only question I have with the establishment is the beautiful seating; every chair and booth is so beautifully detailed, but I wonder if it’s real leather. A question for the manager next time.

Cons: Possible leather furniture??, Pricey
