worth a second chance? maybe the subs?

this place has been open for a while but only has a few reviews here and plenty of good ones elsewhere - this seemed odd, i figured it might be underrated/underappreciated here? having tried it, i'm still not sure what explains the discrepancy.

it's difficult to rate a place without knowing too much about the food you did not like - maybe this is in fact the best possible version of this meal, vegan or not, and so giving it a low rating would not give others the right information. while i'm confused about this, i do know we did not like the food we tried: vegan beyond bao ($16.50), seoul pancakes dumplings ($14), and enoki mushrooms ($13).

enoki mushrooms were the worst of the three and did not have much taste but that of their batter (again, is this in fact good and/or authentic?) seoul pancakes dumplings seemed to have been positively mentioned quite a bit in reviews on another platform, but to us they did not taste like much - whatever the ingredients were, it all faded with it tasting just 'spicy'. vegan beyond baos also seem to be popular and were the best of the three, but i would not try it again.

i think we might have chosen the wrong things to try either in terms of our palates or in terms of the best this place has to offer. if i had to order something again, i'd go for one of the subs.

the place is strictly takeout - there was no tables outside when we visited, and i'd also not expect all dishes there to be suitable for being taken to a park or something - ours weren't but that's on us. the staff was perfectly nice and not being invited to tip for a takeout order is well-appreciated.

it's hard to rate, especially because of the limit on non-vegan places, so three stars is to account for not knowing if it's the dish itself or how it's prepared there, and my feeling that other options there might in fact be quite ok.

Vegan Smoky Tempeh Avo Wrap

Holy sh*t! This wrap was amazing! It comes with chips and guac. Corn tortilla chips if that matters to anyone else lol. I was blown away with this. Tempeh was great, had a sweet sauce that was great with the rest of the flavors. New favorite for sure. I order it gluten free (I think they just swap out the tortilla) and with more raw greens instead of the vegan cheddar cheese just cause I don’t like it. The time I ordered it and took this pic, I forgot to add that last part in the special instructions on doordash and so I’ve tried it both ways and personally like it better with no cheese.

Comfort food for takeout near John Jay College

This place is a takeout place (with two metal tables and some chairs outside to eat your meal if you’d wish). It is mostly vegetarian and vegan (with loads of choices), with a few fish dishes. It is located near John Jay College and Mt. Sinai Hospital. Though the food is not out of this world, the food is hearty and satisfying—and there are not a lot of other places nearby that serve vegan food. In another part of town, I might have rated this with three stars. This is not a place to travel to, but if you are in the area and seek takeout, this is a good bet.
