Wonderful surprise

We were struggling to find a restaurant that was still open, when Happy Cow directed us to Pelgag, a small place on the second floor of an inconspicuous building. The motley interior with concert flyers on the walls, random books on shelves and tables that encourage the guests to scribble on them, did not prepare us for some of the best food we’ve had in Japan. Truly exceptional and orginal dishes full of flavor and spices. The menu had about five or six vegan friendly options. Recommended!

Pros: Delicious flavor and spices, Good price

Cons: Limited seating

yummy and unique

Cool book store, skater vibes. Not crowded on a Sunday night, easy to get a table at 7:30pm. Yummy unique food.

Pros: Good vegan options, limited menu , Maybe the best eggplant ive ever had

Cons: Only one guy, so wait time was a little long

Unique flavors

Delicious food!

Not strictly Japanese food but unique Japanese flavors can be found in each dish. Much needed place for vegans in Kyoto, given that others either have limited hours or unhealthy food

Place is really cute with a chill vibe. The owner is very friendly and does his best to provide the best service

Cute restaurant, but expensive for the portion size

I'm conflicted about the restaurant because it is super cute, very nice interior and friendly dude that runs the place all by himself. The food is good but for the price you pay the portions ar a bit tiny really. The noodles are delicious though. The fried set was super small.

Excellent place!!

This place is one of the best vegetarian restaurants i came across in Japan and a really talented chef!
The food is a bit more worldwide oriented, no strictly japanese dishes, so as a picky western traveler, i had no problem liking everything I tried.
Any time again!

Pros: Insanely talented cook, Low prizes, Super tasty and visually beautiful

Really nice vibe

Really cute, small, and thankful it was open at the odd time of 4 ish pm. The guy was nice and cool and made all the food from scratch!

Pros: Options, Vibe, Food from scratch, homey feel

Cons: Tasty but not the best I've ever had you know

A beautiful lunch plate

The daily plate was very much worth the trek across town, being both unique and subtle in its variety of texture, colour, and flavour. It was everything I'd expect from a mixed lunch-plate, plus a little more. It is a shame that the portion size is not slightly larger; the soup on the plate could have been replaced with another dish and added on the side, for example. I left a little hungry still, but wasn't dissatisfied. It would be an ideal spot if you are planning to try and hit another cafe for tea and wouldn't like to be too full. The interior atmosphere seems unassuming at first, but if you find yourself at the upstairs table with the light pouring into the bay window, you'll find it quite relaxing.

Okayish

We came here as a second choice as AIN Soph was closed. The vibe and staff were nice, but the food was just okay. Nothing wrong with it, but for this price (1300 for the daily plate), you would expect a bit more volume and creativity. The tempeh was not seasoned at all.

Pros: Organic beer

Nice cafe cafe with ordinary food option

Went for dinner here with a friend and we find that the staff is friendly and the location is convenient, but we have been surprised in how the the food is basic.! Some kind of dishes that you can make (quickly) at home. Maybe is better for lunch, i don't know. But not really a dinner experience.

Pros: Central location

Cons: Not really creative food

Delicious food and cozy ambience

Loving the new location because it is more central and accessible. The food was incredible. Had the dinner plate with brown rice, fried tempeh, chickpea croquette, veggies and mashed potatoes. Every bite was flavorful and fresh! Owner and staff are friendly and accommodating, ambience was cozy and relaxing. Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Only reason it isn’t five stars for me is because it used to be fully vegan and now serves dairy and potentially eggs in the future.

Delicious food in lovely venue

We had dinner sitting by the window overlooking a laneway in this lovely cafe with delightful staff. The food was delicious. We enjoyed a coconut milk curry with rice and salad and the Pelgag plate which had felafel, crispy tempeh, pickled chilli, potato salad, tomato with onion, lettuce salad, rice and soup. We also had a beer and hot cocoa, both of which were great. We would be keen to come back.

Closing this location & Moving

We tried twice to eat at Pelgag, located at the end of an alley next to Kyoto University North Agriculture Faculty’ driveway entrance on Imadegawa dori. The restaurant was closed both times but at the second visit there was a “Relocation notice “ on the door that said:

this café will close by November 23 (2019). It will reopen on December 23 at
Vingt-Trois Building, 3-4 floor, 607 -19 Uraderacho Nakagyoku , Kyoto.

A very enjoyable lunch

We stopped here for lunch which turned out to be amazing. A great panini set with salads & soup and a choice of different teas, beer & wine.
The service was great and english was spoken. The menu is clear and all vegan! Priced well and in a nice setting. We're going back for dinner, for sure! Fantastic addition to the vegan restaurants in Kyoto

Pros: All vegan, Great food
