Very Bland Tofish - Edit
Though they offered 'Tofish' it was very Bland. Just a block of tofu deep fried in batter. No attempt to add flavour like nori . I love tofu but it does need to be flavoured/marinaded. The batter was nice. Have a practice with flavouring tofu and you'll get 4⭐

Battered tofu & chips are worth trying - Edit
The battered tofu and chips weren’t on the menu, but prepared fresh when asked. Good portions and tasty too.

Tofish , chips and mushy peas - Edit
Just the one fish and chips option, because there was a V next to quite a lot of their dishes, you had to read them to work out the vegan from the vegetarian. The Tofish is bland and needs some nori to give it a taste of the sea. I found myself over seasoning it multiple times. That said the batter was excellent.

really good chips! - Edit
They ran out of mushy peas.... I am not getting over this any time soon.
Read moreThe chips are fantastic. I didn't find the Tofish bland, but I also did a lot of dipping in my gravy, which helped.
Will definitely be going back.
Pros: Good portions, Tofish!
Cons: Ran out of mushy peas?!

Can’t recommend - Edit
Ordered the ToVish (?) and Chips for about £8. The Fish was okay although it’s just plain tofu coated in some batter. The fries were tasteless and soggy. Don’t recommend going there.

Food great, service a bit iffy - Edit
We ate in.
Read moreThe menu, which comes in "newspapers", has tofish and chips and a vegan pie on the menu. When you order vegan options they ask if you want vegan chips, as these are fried in vegetable oil and separately from the non vegan options.
Food was nice. Tofish was a novelty.
On a service point of view, it's counter service and we had issues paying and has to go back up several times to try. The cocktails are on tap, and weren't working. Things were missed when food was brought to our table. The place is nice, and you'll enjoy it, but there were some areas where the place doesn't look like it's being looked after or maintained very well, which is a shame as they clearly aimed for nice decor when designing the venue.
Pros: Tofish was a novelty , Chips were nice , Multiple vegan options
Cons: Things out of stock or missing, Issues paying , Lacklustre service

Tofish and chips - Edit
As others have commented here, I asked for the vegan tofish and chips and they were happy to accommodate. Tofish was very crispy and a good portion. Lacking that 'sea' flavour that you would get from the addition of seaweed into the batter but all around good meal. On the receipt it says "GF tofish" and "GF chips" so it seems they cook in a different frier to everything else and the food was handed straight from the kitchen instead of being put onto the food warmers with the other fish/meats and chips so they did well to avoid cross contamination.
Read morePros: Crispy tofish , Careful to avoid cross contamination
Cons: Not on the menu

Functional tofish and chips seller - Edit
It’s not on the takeaway menu but they do serve it. If the queue is long always worth asking if it is available to save you time…
Read moreIt’s about £7 for a portion, and a bit bland so would strongly recommend adding some salt and vinegar to add to the flavour (coming from someone who hates both…).
The chips were hot but soggy.

Nice Tofish - Edit
We enjoyed the Tofish and got a good sized portion. It wasn’t written on the menu, we had to ask for it - I only knew to do this from other helpful reviews.
Read moreThe chips unfortunately weren’t great as they were a bit undercooked but at least they were vegan!
The staff were also very friendly.
Pros: Tofish, Friendly staff, Good location
Cons: Uncooked chips, A little expensive

Not bad! - Edit
I ordered tofish and chips and my sister ordered battered halloumi and chips. The tofish was pretty unseasoned but not bad, but my sister enjoyed the halloumi. Chip portions were quite big, I'd recommend sharing them! The tofish also wasn't written on the menu inside but when we asked if they had it they did :)

Great portion but a little bland - Edit
We ordered 2 x Tofish and chips, with mushy peas. The Tofish needed nori sheets as there wasn't a fishy flavour but the batter was excellent. Chips were okay but my local does better. Mushy peas were decent.

Pappa you lie! - Edit
Not very impressed. We got the tofish and chips and it was very basic for the £13 price. We also asked the member of staff for any vegan sauces, she brought over mayo and tartar sauce. We asked several times if they were vegan and she assured us they were. Not convinced we checked the allergens on the website and it contained eggs and milk.
Read moreUnfortunately one of us had already used tartar sauce on her tofu so ruined the meal.
Wouldn't go again.
Cons: Staff don't know their allergens

Not for me - Edit
Gonna start by saying that the people working here are absolutely lovely. Just so friendly and helpful.
Read moreBut the Tofish....just wasn't my cup of tea 😅
It was literally a block of firm tofu in batter. I've been too spoiled down South with The No Catch Co. and their realistic imitation fish!
However the chips were very yummy 👌

Great tofu & portion sizes, chips a little lacklustre - Edit
Me and my husband had the tofish and chips, as well as mushy peas and curry sauce on the side. We also had a pint of cider each (it was my birthday after all!!)
Read moreOverall, it was great to have vegan chip shop option in whitby (they also had a pie which looked pretty good but we didn't try). Portion sizes were HUGE, even for us with big appetites, a little too big but better than being too small! We both loved the tofu which wasn't your standard tofu wrapped in seaweed, but seemed to have been marinated in some kind of seafood like seasoning before being fried. We had enquired whether it came with seaweed as although I don't personally mind it, my husband isnt a fan. So good!
The chips were not exceptional, but better than most other places on the Yorkshire coast which use *shivers* beef dripping 🤢 (was so sad to learn this growing up on the Yorkshire coast, warning for people not from here as it is not commonplace in the rest of the UK!).
I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. I hesitated over 3 or 4. A great meal, thoroughly enjoyed but not loving the chips made it difficult to give it a 4. I also think (not 100 percent) that the vegan options might not be available in the takeaway bit (we ate in the restaurant) as I couldn't see it on the menu there. There is also a papa's chipshop in Scarborough that is only takeaway that doesn't have the vegan options on the menu. It was also pretty expensive for a chippy, we paid over £30.

Pros: Great tofish, Generous portion sizes, No beef dripping(!)
Cons: Pretty expensive, Chips were just ok, No vegan takeaway options other than chips&sides

Had a lovely carton of chips here on a Friday night before a few beers. Drenched in vinegar with a dusting of salt. Nice place with vegan options that I’ll be engaging with at some point in the future no doubt.

Multiple vegan and veggie options, quick service - Edit
Visited twice, once for take away and once for the restaurant (March and October 2022). There's a good number of options for both vegans and vegetarians and they marked clearly on the menu.
Read moreThe food was good, was served very hot and came quickly. Staff were very friendly. I tried both the battered tofu and the battered halloumi. The halloumi comes in a honey glaze and is quite sweet, I much preferred the tofu which has really nice seasoned batter. For the halloumi I was asked if I wanted if I wanted it cooked in vegetable oil or in the regular fried (I assume has beef dripping) which I thought was good attention to detail. I opted for vegetable oil. Only negative point on the quality is that one piece of the halloumi tasted strange, perhaps it was old. Couldn't fault the tofu though.
Another review pointed out that vegan food wasn't available on a Sunday evening, which was the same time I visited (although at 5pm, so not late). I did notice that when leaving that on one of the floors all the chairs had already been put on the tables at 6pm despite closing time being 9pm on Sundays. So opening times and food availability might vary, especially with the time of year with Whitby being a tourist town. The website notes this, but it's a shame that there isn't more clarity on this.
Pros: Multiple vegan and veggie options, Attention to detail on veggie preferences
Cons: The vegan fryer might not always be available, Opening times could vary

No vegan/vegetarian on a Sunday evening - Edit
I can’t comment on other times, but on a Sunday evening there is no vegan/vegetarian option. My husband tried to get fish & chips for him, and the tofish & chips for me, and was told there was no vegan/veggie food on. By that time everywhere else that proffered to offer vegan chips was closed, so nothing available in Whitby for me!

We were there yesterday (also Sunday) just after 5pm and they were serving vegan and veggie food then. I did notice however that before we left at around 6pm that had already put the chairs on the tables on one of the floors. It does say on there website that seasonal opening hours may vary, it's a shame this isn't communicated better.
