5-Star Casual Upscale in Évora with Vegan Options!

We embarked on a day trip from Lisbon to the city of Évora. After several hours of exploring the Old Town’s historic sites and landmarks, we sought sustenance and local wines. Amidst the winding alleyways, serendipity was on our side as we stumbled upon Origens Restaurante. Origens’ modest exterior belies its sophisticated ambiance. The cavernous and chic decor incorporates elements of Évora’s local culture, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A host greeted us and we inquired about vegan options. Origens offered several choices for us that were directly plant-based, or vegetarian dishes that were easily adaptable to a plant-based diet. We promptly secured a table.

Our waitress, Mercy Muiru (an English-speaking native of Kenya), was exceptional. Her extensive knowledge of the menu and her exceptional service made her a delightful companion. We ordered glasses of wines, impressed by Mercy’s attention to detail in selecting appropriate glasses to enhance each wine’s unique flavor profile. Our orders were promptly placed. 

I commenced my meal with the vegetarian (vegan) empada, which included a fresh side salad with a honey-vinaigrette dressing. Being “plant-based” and not ideologically “vegan,” it was very attentive of Mercy to inform me of honey in the dressing to ensure my comfort. The empada, although small in size, possessed a remarkable flavor; the side salad, garnished with pomegranate seeds, provided a light and harmonious accompaniment. My main course consisted of a marinated and braised tofu served with a cauliflower purée featuring small florets of broccoli. The tofu’s dense texture and garlic-forward flavor complemented the cauliflower purée, while the steamed broccoli added a nice crunch. The overall dish was exceptionally flavorful and satisfying. Mercy persuaded us to indulge in a specially crafted dessert designed to accommodate our dietary restrictions. We shared this delectable creation, which was visually stunning and equally impressive in taste; the gelato was of exceptional quality, and the accompanying espresso enhanced the overall experience.

In conclusion, we left feeling thoroughly satisfied. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mercy for the exceptional dining experience and commend the chef and his sous-chef for their culinary expertise. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to return to Origens Restaurante in the very near future. Easily 5-Stars!!!

10 Stars!!!!

After a day of exploring Evora, we stumbled upon a charming alleyway and discovered Origens Restaurante, a beautifully decorated establishment offering an intimate dining experience, even during lunchtime. While Origens Restaurante does provide a few vegan options on its menu, we sought the assistance of our server, Mercy Muiru, to guide us through the ordering process. Mercy’s exceptional attentiveness, friendliness, and warmth made her an invaluable guide. She demonstrated which dishes on the menu could be modified to accommodate a vegan diet and assisted us in selecting the perfect wine to complement our meal.
To commence our culinary journey, I opted for the daily soup (sopa), which consisted of a bed of collard greens, crispy tomato skins (substituting for chorizo), and a white bean soup. The soup was truly remarkable.
For the main course, I indulged in the Pumpkin (abóbora) dish, served over a bed of wilted spinach, pickled onions (balsamic), roasted pumpkin seeds (pepita), roasted pine nuts, and cilantro bread crumbs. The dish was an exquisite culinary experience.
To conclude our meal, we opted for the Chef’s choice of the day, which turned out to be pumpkin fritters accompanied by orange sorbet and peanuts. The dessert was delectable and perfectly complemented the meal.
Origens Restaurante holds a Michelin Guide recognition, making it an exceptional destination for a gastronomic adventure. The exceptional cuisine and warm hospitality of the staff make it a must-visit for food enthusiasts.

Delicious Michelin and Vegan/Veg friendly

We had a wonderful tasting menu that accommodated for 1 Vegan, 2 Veg and 1 non-restricted diner and it was wonderful. The chef even asked our vegan if Figs would be okay. Thoughtful, delicious and excellent service to boot! Highly recommend!

Lovely vegan tasting menu

We had a delicious vegan tasting menu- 5 courses with paired wines for 65 euros each. The food was lovingly prepared and presented. A must visit if you’re in Evora. Just book ahead and tell them you are vegan.

Best meal I had in Evora!

Not a lot of vegan food readily available in Evora, but this spot was amazing! We took the “Trust the Chef” option and had a multi-course vegan feast with amazing drinks and desserts! The chef is really creative and happy to accommodate needs, so don’t be afraid to explain you’re vegan and let him go to town.

Cons: Must go off-menu for vegan items
