Giant Tater Tots! - Edit
I ordered the curry udon and the giant tater totes and they were both amazing, great flavor and small-medium sized portions. Restaurant has great decor and nice scene.

Welcoming new spot in Central Eastside - Edit
I tried the curry and I think the open kitchen or tofu protein is a magical portal to a universe where unicorns dream of electric sheep, because they are friends. Also a nice imported beer and sake and soju selection, for big and small budgets.
Read moreHighly recommend the okonomiyaki, the tempura udon - I took some home and left it in a cool refrigerator, and the noodles made for a very chill Japanese breakfast.

Interesting food - Edit
We enjoyed dinner here. The okonomiyaki was our favorite dish by far. The noodle bowl was good. The other items we tried weren’t great.

Disappointing - Edit
I wanted to love this place-their menu looks great and more vegan Japanese food is good to have around. But nothing I’ve had from them— curry, tofu katsu, udon, salad, korokke, many onigiri—has been better than passable. The onigiri were especially unsatisfying. The brown rice made them fall apart, and the flavors tended towards tangy and under-seasoned.

Oh Boy! - Edit
I ordered The Combo, which is two onigiri, two kakiage, one giant tater tot, one curried korokke, and a side salad with sesame dressing. The tater tot and korokke were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The kakiage are savory fritters. Of the eight flavors of onigiri, I chose ginger pistachio miso and onion-nutmeg with soy-barley miso. I didn't really like either flavor, but I appreciated that this meal allowed me to try several menu items.

Incredible Vegan Japanese Food - Edit
This was the first time I had been to a vegan Japanese restaurant and it was SO delicious. I got the bento set and the onigiri had such a lovely and unique flavor. The potato salad was on point. The corokke were delicious and so was the fritter. Also had some incredible local beers. Can’t wait to return here!!

Fresh Healthy Japanese Cuisine - Edit
This easy to miss gem surrounded by empty and industrial store fronts, is calm and pleasant inside with lots of wood. It serves healthy vegan versions of country style Japanese dishes. There are many dishes vegans rarely see available to them like Okonomiaki and onigiri (which are made with sweet brown rice and available in some inventive versions). It is well worth a visit.

Cup Ramen is better... - Edit
I knew this place wasn't going to be authentic going in... Which is fine if the food is decent. But oh boy. I did not even wanna finish my curry udon... tastes identical to the curry Cup Noodle I used to eat before going veg. And those are like 98 cents. Don't get me started on the onigiri... it made me shudder. Too much tofu misozuke. Tasted like mayo which is something I'm not a fan of. Also half of the menu was out of stock. ONE STAR. Happy Cow won't let me rate it one star...

Pros: 100% Vegan
Cons: Homeless people sleeping outside , Taste not great, Pricey

We make our own curry powder from scratch using 17 all organic herbs & spices. Your comparison to Cup a Noodle is a huge compliment, as we have spent countless hours trying to make it taste like something junk food (thanks for not saying it tastes healthy!). Also, there's not a speck of mayo in our onigiri. That's tofu misozuke. Tofu that has been fermented in miso for at least a month. But thanks for your input.

I was really angry that night because someone hit my car while it was parked outside the restaurant so that probably contributed to the angry review. But I still was not a fan😒 sorry. I prefer healthy tasting food I suppose.

Thanks for clarifying on what was in the rice ball. It tasted like mayo had no idea.

Fair enough! …& sorry to hear about your car, that’s terrible. We do wish we opened the Shokudo on a cuter street, in a better neighborhood, but the space inside was well worth it to us.

Vegan Okonomiyaki! - Edit
The ginger pistachio miso onigri was great, so was the soup. We really liked the okonomiyaki, the texture of the outer layer was so egg-like and delicious.

Really enjoyed the food here. Nice little restaurant and was able to space out inside as there is no outside dining. We got lucky with parking out front but could imagine might be tricky to get parked. Friendly staff. Had katsu curry and tater tots. Fiancée had bento. Lovely flavours

Unbelievably delicious and nutritious!!! - Edit
Aaaamaaazing!! Omg!! Maybe our favorite PDX spot so far! If only I could learn how they do the magic they do. We had 2 combos, potato salad, the soup added to the combo, fried tofu dish extra sauces. Names I wish I could remember. It was hearty, healthy and perfect for our family of 4. We left feeling like we nurtured our bodies as well as our creative culinary inclinations.

Don’t be a dummy like me and wait for months to try this place. It was a titillating culinary experience and I’ve been dreaming of the tofu katsu every day since. Beautiful Minimalist dining area and an explosion of authentic Japanese flavor in these dishes.

Pretty Good! - Edit
I was ridiculously excited for my food and was not disappointed by the okonomiyaki. I was a little disappointed with the onigiri but truly think that was more about me than the actual food. I would definitely try more from this place.
