Good, quick food option - Edit
I really enjoy the ability to get some good quality and quick food with the A la carte. I personally had the chicken drummies, ginger tofu, and okra. They were all really good tasting. The portion was good and filling for the price. The staff was also very friendly and gave me a sample of some garlic kelp. Definitely will return again.

So satisfying! - Edit
We got the ginger tofu, drummies, mac ‘n’ cheese, and collards. The ginger tofu is a dish I will not forget. I’ve never had anything like it. It was stewy-yet-creamy with a complex heat. The collards and drummies were solid. The mac was peculiar but not bad.

So good! - Edit
I had the chicken drummies and Mac and cheese. SO GOOD!! Probably one of the best Mac and cheese I’ve ever had and certainly the best “chicken” wings! The texture is perfect and crispy on the outside! While I wouldn’t consider any of the food healthy… it’s definitely a good place to treat yourself.

To get to a napkin, must open non-compostable plastic ware plastics set - Edit
IVegan @ NuVegan Café in Richmond, Virginia. The vegan macaroni and cheese was the best Mac and cheese I’ve ever tasted. Collard Greens highly recommended on Happy Cow app and did not disappoint. Extremely tasty. The black bean burger also tasted scrumptious. We are going back to try the vegan Mexican food later today. I prefer to eat at vegan only restaurants due to cross contamination of animal products at non-vegan establishments. Go vegan!
Read moreThe only thing I was upset about was that to get just a paper napkin you had to break open a plastic ware (forks / knives / spoons) set and they were not the compostable kind). My boyfriend did not need the plastic ware but needed the paper napkin and got mad at me when I told him that I had silverware to remedy the problem in my car parked directly outside, but it was too late, the plastic ware was already broken open and he didn’t care about the planet that much. So it became my problem. He was like. “let me enjoy my meal!” Grrrrr. How could I say anything after that? We will return but I will bring my paper napkins and silverware en tow. NuVegan even gave us three plastic ware sets and we were just two people. We returned the extra two plastic ware sets and I was grateful that NuVegan took them back. Some restaurants don’t take stuff back due to Covid-19 cooties issues.
Pros: Vegan options for all, Tasty variety, unbelievably delicious., Friendly staff.
Cons: The napkin inside plastic ware situation upset me, My credit card left near counter, staff not alert, Should use more compostable containers

Good food, important community member; missed the mark in one big respect - Edit
Looked forward to returning (from
Read moreBoston) to Nuvegan all pandemic. But now I must follow oil-free plant-based diet. Despite being assured that everything on the menu other than the Mac & Cheese is o-free, I ended up with several items fried or sautéed in oil — BBQ tofu, collard greens, probably the okra as well — a health setback for me. Perhaps my naivety but please do better with info for customers when it comes to oils.
Pros: Lots of vegan options., Casual, welcoming.
Cons: Counter staff needs to be more knowledgeable., Few if any oil-free food options.

All Richmond vegans need to try - Edit
When I moved to Richmond last year, everyone told me I needed to go to Nuvegan, but now I regret putting it off for so long! There were more options than I could imagine trying, but based on reviews, the drummies, mac and cheese, and collard greens were what I was going to order. Some reviews had mentioned unfriendly staff so I was a little hesitant, but I didn’t have that experience!
Read moreThe young man who helped me was very friendly. I asked for the order, but before he filled up my plate, he stopped and told me that things are a la carte so the drummies plus two sides would be about $20. I appreciated his honesty and decided on just the drummies and mac. I also got a chocolate chip cookie for dessert. I paid, left a tip (I wish I could give more, but it was already a little pricey for one person), and went to eat in. Really nice environment with plenty of seating. Like the other reviews said, it’s all single-use plastic, even for dining in. But when I opened my container, damn! He loaded me up! Large proportions and they’re not shy.
The drummies were very interesting. I don’t remember the last time I ate chicken wings (six-ish years ago?) but they tasted like them to me! The outside was crunchy, the inside was kinda juicy. Dipping them into sauces helps since they’re a little dry, but that doesn’t ruin the taste. These are the first non-tofu wings I’ve ever had and, just, WOW. What a texture. I don’t know how they do it. I probably wouldn’t get these next time just because it feels like a “try-it-at-least-once” kind of thing, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t like them. A little too uncanny valley of meat to me. The mac and cheese was a bit squishy but I appreciate how they’re made southern style, if that makes sense.
I would love to go often and try as many menu items as I want, but it’s just a bit out of my price range. I think I’ll save this place for special occasions, since one entree, one side, one dessert, and a tip was ~$20. The price is for good reason though: local all-vegan restaurant with large proportions and large variety of items.
Pros: Great convenient location, So many vegan options, it’s paralyzing, Trendy environment, friendly staff
Cons: More expensive than typical take-out for one, Not made-to-order, if that matters to you, Single-use plastic

We paid $2 to park on the street. I'm not sure what parking is like in Richmond, we were just traveling down i95 and made the pit stop. It looked like only street parking.
Read moreAll food is served in plastic to go containers and utensils, even if you're eating in.
My husband and I each ordered the lasagna. I had a side of collards, he had the sides of cabbage and broccoli. We shared the broccoli and lasagna with our 3 year old who really loved the food. Everything was good, but I see why other people claimed it was greasy- there was a puddle of grease under the collards by the time I finished them. Lasagna was a big hit, but had a slight sweet flavor to it. Maybe made with a sweet Italian sausage. Cabbage was just a little spicy.
I only bottled water and bottled tea to drink, not sure if they had much else for drinks. The food sitting out (it's all ready -to-serve food) didn't really look appealing but once it was scooped in the to go box, it tasted delicious.
They had a lot of cheesecakes, cakes and cinnamon rolls to pick from. The three of us shared one slice of Oreo cheesecake and it was definitely one of the very best we ever had.
When we walked in the guy greeted us by saying "everything here is vegan except the employees so you have nothing to worry about"... I thought was pretty funny.
Pros: Easy to get to from i95, Indoor seating, quick serve food, Huge portions and yummy dessert
Cons: Limited or pay to park, Tables were raggedy , Not made fresh to order

So good we went back twice in one day - Edit
I wasn’t going to miss out on going somewhere called “NuVegan” and they did NOT disappoint. The food is unreal. The whole atmosphere is very family and genuine and I really loved the staff. The place wasn’t busy when I went (a Friday and a Sunday) and I really liked that.
Read moreNow on to the food. Let me begin. The collared greens. If you go here and don’t get them, you’ve made a mistake. I was told it’s a family recipe. You have to try. The chicken salad is the other must-try. The flavor profile is perfect—savory, smoky, salty, and a little sweet.
We also went for brunch (Sundays 10-3) and I tried the chicken. Let me tell you about these chicken drummies. Get some maple syrup and you’re going to be sitting at home thinking about it like I am.
Don’t be fooled by the serving cups. You will be full!
Pros: So very flavorful!, Lots of different options, All vegan!

Amazing food - Edit
The variety of vegan food is mind boggling. Entrees, appetizers, and desserts a' plenty. The portions are huge and everything tastes great. I particularly like their cinnamon buns and chik wings.
Read moreI gave four instead of five stars for a few reasons. The staff is not particularly friendly, sometimes out right rude. Avoid online ordering and/or delivery services. You risk ordering items that are not actually available. But you won't know that they are not available until you (or your ubereats driver) go to pick up the food. The restaurant itself smells bad.
Four stars. You can expect amazing food but not much else.
Pros: Food is tasty, Large portions, Desserts!

Sooooo good! - Edit
Visiting Williamsburg for a week and it’s well worth the 50 minute drive to NuVegan. Everything we tried was delicious… Mac and cheese, mashed sweet potatoes, sautéed cabbage, Thai noodles, and potato salad. The only thing we didn’t “love” was the tofu curry and we found it bland but with a nice texture. The lasagna was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted and chicken salad was exceptional. They really load up the plate and there is no skimping. I have a wicked sweet tooth and their desserts did not disappoint. The chocolate chip cookie is like a rich sugar cookie with chocolate chips, peanut butter cookie was one of the best I’ve ever had, cakes were super moist (we tried carrot and red velvet) and the cinnamon roll was giant… not super sweet but heated at home with a dollop of vegan ice cream and it hit the spot. Everything was fresh, staff was friendly, service was quick and inside seating was available. They also have smoothies but we were so loaded up, we didn’t get to try them. Must go!

Great wings - Edit
The only place I can get GF wings. They were good. My hubby ate other items and was unimpressed with flavor. Went again last week and like most places were short staffed. Tried to pre-order through app, but wouldn't work so we drove there. I was in line 20 minutes with minimal movement. There were a couple of people on the side and I spoke to one who said he spent 15 minutes going thru online ordering apps to get thru. He then said his pick up time was 30 minutes ago. 1 women was serving the pre-made items, taking orders, running register, grabbing online/to go orders, serving ordered food to tables and cleaning up ... whew God Bless her. We ended up leaving having to be somewhere else.

Rodeo on TV- NOT VEGAN FRIENDLY!!!! - Edit
NON-VEGAN ENVIRONMENT: Let me start out by saying I was utterly disgusted to see the RODEO on TV after finishing my meal. Vegan doesn't just mean eating a plant-based diet, it means practicing compassion to animals in all facets of life.
Read moreFOOD: I ordered chick'n drummies with a side of vegan mac and cheese. It was bland and gave me an upset stomach. I also had a cinnamon roll which was tasty, but a little dry. My boyfriend ordered vegetables as those were the only soy-free hot/cold bar options and even those upset his stomach too! I know this is designed to be comfort-food and not health food, but there has to be a line. Collard greens shouldn't be tearing up your stomach when you can digest them just fine at home. Everything was overpriced as well.
SERVICE: The staff was very unfriendly and didn't seem to know what they were doing. They weren't very clear about which menu items were available and none of the food on their bars is labeled with the name, much less with allergens. The tables and bathrooms were not clean. All of their food is served in plastic containers with single-use utensils, which is obviously horrible for the environment and doesn't align with the values most vegans hold! They don't even have a place to recycle the plastic. I think the owner severely neglects this location and the people working there probably aren't even vegan.
BOTTOM LINE: This was the second chance I gave NuVegan. I will not be going back to the Richmond location, maybe other locations are better.
Pros: Fully Vegan Menu, Lots of options, Location
Cons: Animal Cruelty on TV, Service, Food

Great food, but not great vibes - Edit
I heard great things about this spot so during a visit to Richmond we gave it a try. The food is good, some of the best Mac n cheese, collards and the Oreo cheesecake was amazing! The entrees were alright, my husband and I both said we should have just got the sides platter as those were what stood out. The vibe in this place is seriously lacking. Everything is packed to go even though the dining room is open. The staff isn't very friendly or welcoming. At some point while we were eating an employee came out from the back, turned on a tv and started blasting music out of it. Thankfully we were finishing up and left soon after. A very weird place to dine in, I would maybe go back for takeout, but I've had much better soul food at nicer spots before.
