Best Vegan Sushi - Edit
5 stars if I could. This is the best vegan sushi in the area. By default everything on the menu is made with fish (desserts are vegan) but everything can be made vegan.
Read moreThe restaurant was dead when I went, I think that's why they started serving fish, to appeal to a larger crowd.

Why the Fish? - Edit
I’ve been coming here for the past few years on my trips to San Diego from LA and almost immediately noticed that the menu was different. When I saw that real fish was being used in the rolls I called over the server and asked what had happened to the restaurant being all vegan and it’s stance against animal cruelty. She mentioned that the new owner decided last year to start serving fish but did not elaborate further. This was super disappointing as I valued the restaurant for its uniqueness and maverick stance against industrial fishing that is destroying our oceans. Sure, the food still tastes good but the ‘soul’ is no longer there. It is just another sushi joint that happens to have more vegan options. It no longer has any ‘why’ to its existence and is now a contributor to fish decline and animal cruelty. It is clear that the new owner cares more about making a buck than about making change in the world, which is sad as plant-based and vegan living is on the rise and many all-vegan places are doing really well. Am hoping this restaurant will return to its original all vegan menu and mission or I may be looking elsewhere in the future. #Veganuary

Fish On The Menu - Edit
No longer vegan😒
Read moreNoW Sushi offers a great, beachside alternative to the Yasai. Service here is quicker and more attentive than at the Yasai, and the quality of food is nearly identical. Plus, unlike the Yasai, NoW Sushi is a nonprofit! It’s not as upscale here and the vibe is super relaxed. You can grab your sushi after a day at the beach or take it to go and eat it by the water — they’re only a 1 minute walk away. I’d say go here when you want casual dining and head to the Yasai for upscale. I’ll definitely be returning.

Never coming here again :/ - Edit
They added fish to the menu without really marking it on the menu because the vegan menu ALSO says “crab” “shrimp” etc. I hope I didn’t get any real fish the last time I went.
Read morePlaces like Plumeria thriving every time I go are proof it’s not being veg that lost them business, just like adding fish won’t be the bandaid fix they want it to be.
If you look at Yelp the owner is personally attacking vegans for being upset at the change so add unprofessional to the list of cons 👍

Delicious Sushi! (but I wish they were still all vegan!) - Edit
I have had my fair share of vegan sushi, especially since it’s my favorite food and this place is delicious. One of my top favorite sushi restaurants. The rolls are a mix of traditional rolls and creative rolls but regardless you cannot go wrong with either! I love how many of their rolls use cream cheese, and their “seafood” taste exactly how I remember it tasting. Highly recommend!
Read moreUpdate: after the Yasai started serving fish, I thought this was my safe place, but unfortunately, not anymore. At least I have Gorilla Eats Sushi. I usually do not mind nonvegan restaurants, but it’s upsetting to see them go backward, especially since I thought they were based on ending animal cruelty. I am super disappointed. Following HappyCow rules for nonveg restaurants, I am dropping them from five stars but also, since I am just annoyed, I am giving them two stars. Support vegan!

They serve fish now? - Edit
What’s the point in their whole initiative with the NoW movement if they’re selling fish now? It’s just a sushi restaurant with really expensive vegan options.

Good vegan options - Edit
I come here every time I visit San Diego because its close to Mission beach and the food is good (and all vegan). However I just found out theyre adding fish to the menu this week so this is just a heads up to anyone who cares about cross contamination — or anyone who cares about a restaurant moving backward from vegan to pescatarian..

Good sushi but expensive - Edit
I really liked all the rolls I tried but they were very pricey. I also tried the katsu chicken which I could take or leave. You’re better off sticking to the sushi in my opinion.

IN SHOCK! I COULD EAT THIS EVERY DAY! - Edit
We ordered the barbosa, the rocky, and the spicy tuna nigiri! I can’t believe these are vegan! Like I’m actually in shock. I loved everything we got but the rocky was actually my favorite! I thought the barbosa would be but I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THE ROCKY! We loved it so much that we already have another roll on the way *lol* we ordered the Annie as well! MUST MUST MUST TRY THIS PLACE! Absolutely amazing! The Annie is very sweet and delicious. Would recommend all of them but again the rocky is super super YUMMY! The only thing I didn’t really like was the miso soup. It lacked saltiness.. Still a perfect score imo

Great spot, right along the Mission Beach boardwalk. Menu offers bowls, rolls, and drinks. Ordering the Barbosa and Madi hand rolls, I most enjoyed the Barbosa. Tastes so good that I can't believe it's vegan.

Great Spot in MB - Edit
So nice to have vegan sushi close to home and close to the beach. Inside and outside seating with friendly, helpful service. My fav was the Fiesta Rollo, Annie was also very good. I’d stay away from the Marilyn as the tofu laid over the top is bland and detracts from the inside ingredients. Once we took the tofu off, the roll was ok. Garlic edemame was VERY garlicky so be sure that’s the favor sensation you want. We will definitely be back.

The absolute best - Edit
Literally the only vegan sushi you ever need. 10 out of 5 stars. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be their Marilyn roll. I didn’t like sushi before I was vegan, but now I’m obsessed with sushi because of this place. Also I take all my non-vegan friends here and they LOVE it.

Good, but too much rice for the price. I would go back tho 😉 - Edit
Sushi was pretty good overall and of course what a great cause for the animals! But honestly the price was just way too much for the sushi creativity. The rolls tasted pretty similar. I'm totally okay with spending money on vegan sushi but I felt likei it was just sightly lacking (sorry I really wanted to write a glowing review) and they just used TOO MUCH rice in the rolls for that price. I WOULD totally go back though if I had a craving! Still tasty! 🙂
