Great lunch! - Edit
I had tried Ninth Square's Market's food at Compassionfest in the past but this was my first time stopping in the actual restaurant and I will definitely be back! Friendly staff, generous portions for a reasonable price and great food! Especially the mac n cheeze! Rice and beans and cabbage were also good. The jerk tofu was a little too smoke/bbq flavored for my taste but it was a great texture for tofu! Someone seated at a table next to us let me know that they do offer samples if you want to try something before you buy it. Overall a great lunch!

OMG!!!! I’m so glad I discovered this restaurant! It’s the best vegan food I’ve ever had!!! I was there 2 days ago and am planning to return today. You’ll have a lot to choose from. Last but not least you get a lot of bang for your buck. I highly recommend this place! You won’t be disappointed!

New England’s best all-vegan Rasta café - Edit
At long last, yesterday I ate here. I arrived soon after opening, just ahead of the steady stream of lunchtime customers. While I had sampled their food at three different crowded Compassionfests with so many conversations and distractions going on all around, I could not concentrate upon and therefore not truly enjoy whatever it was I was trying to eat.
Read moreInside the café, I happily was able to sit alone and to pay full attention to what I was eating. The food is great! And nourishing and satisfying and underpriced! Nothing too spicy, too salty, too sweet, or too oily. Also, no overwhelmingly detectable onions or garlic, a big plus for me, because I shun alliums, yet so many restaurants shove alliums down their customers’ throats.
The Large platter is 7 dishes, but I unwisely had eaten a big breakfast, so I ordered the Medium platter, which is 5 dishes topped with medallions of plantains. Unlike at New England’s other all-vegan Rasta cafés, namely Fire N Spice on Capitol Av in Hartford (distinct from its now shuttered Sisson Av location), Shandal’s in Bridgeport, and Belmont in Worcester, and at the almost all-veg Lion’s Den in Hartford, here mock meats do not predominate, in fact today the menu had only one, which I skipped, because mock meats make a mockery of veganism. I also omitted the rice, and still I had an ample array of wholesome veggies from which to choose. I was stuffed, but not bloated, evidence of their frugal use of oil.
The aforementioned Rasta cafés and Ninth Square all have in common the same disposable aluminum round bowls with, if for takeout, the same clear plastic round lids. Is there is an academy from which all these Rasta chefs have graduated at which all have taken a fraternal pledge to serve everything on this same inelegant dishware? Or do all these cafés simply lack dishwashing facilities? Rather than complain, next time I will bring my own container. And next time I will skip breakfast.
I go to New Haven usually to visit the Yale Univ Art Gall, and so I would eat two blocks away at Claire’s because, once snaring an elusive parking space at Yale, I did not want to search for another space at Ninth Square, the name of its New Haven neighborhood. But much to my delight, parking is plentiful at Ninth Square, especially on Saturday, either just around the corner or in the garage overhead, its entrance literally right next door. So, except on Sunday, no more Claire’s for me!
Pros: nutritious and delicious wholesome vegetables, parking is more ample than you might expect, way too underpriced

A Great Find - Edit
Pleasantly surprised by this place. For starters it is 100% vegan and second the food was all really tasty. Not fancy just a place to get a quick meal. Highly recommended this one.

Eh... - Edit
We’re huge Caribbean food fans after living in Latin America but, honestly, I would rate Ninth Square Market as just “okay.” The rice was dry, the curry only slightly warm and vegetables were all over cooked. Plus, everything tasted exactly the same. In addition, the sticky table, broken chairs and the shady looking broken glass entrance door definite distracted from the overall reggae ambiance.

This place is simply amazing. The jerk tofu is the best tofu I've ever had, and the other protein options are equally good. The couple who own the restaurant are wonderful too!

Overwhelmingly Delicious! - Edit
This place is a MUST stop for ALL vegans! An array of homemade dishes are available each day and visible through the glass as you choose what you want to fill your belly with and the sweet owners dish up the deliciousness! I’ve tried the bbq tofu, stir fry, plantains, sweet potatoes, curried veggies and eggplant stew and all were divinely flavored. The family that owns and operates Ninth Square are some of the sweetest folks I’ve met and I look forward to seeing them as much as eating their food! A win for vegans everywhere!

Just do it. A true gem. Incredible flavors, plenty of choices, great price. You simply can't go wrong. I wish I had one in my town. Recommended: jerk tofu, mac 'n cheeze, the greens, eggplant stew. Metered parking around the corner, but the meters take cards too. RIGHT OFF I-95 too, no joke!! The perfect vegan rest stop between New York and Boston.

This place isn't worthy of 5 stars! There is no scale! The flavours here are phenomenal! I see complaints of oily foods, being a low oil eater I still make exemptions for a place like this. This isn't a place to eat everyday but once or twice a week for sure. I think Indian and chinese food is usually much more oily. Anyways, they have a variety of veg proteins and vegetables. My favorites are the jerk chicken, curry broccoli, and curry tofu. Will try the fish and ginger chicken and let you know!

surprising vegan place - Edit
Just being vegan makes it special. the eggplant was my favorite, surprisingly. the curried tofu was deeo fried and quite oily. it tasted good but the oil did spill over my container i can't deny. the broccoli and cauliflower seemed to have breadcrumbs, whatever it was made it good. i walked in at open time and the food looked bright and colorful. the atmosphere was quite austere, kind of a contrast to the reggae music playing but it was clean looking if nothing else. i would have liked to try the jerk tofu. it looked delicious. i think some rice would have added to the meal i felt bad for overlooking the tip jar. Sorry.

Caribbean vegan - Edit
I love vegan Caribbean counter service spots. This one is in downtown New Haven, a couple streets away from the main area, but it’s definitely worth the trip. They have a buffet table with lots of dishes that rotate daily. They offer different size platters, and you can mix and match different items. I opted for the largest platter, which gives you the choice of 7 items. I got broccoli, dal, stew, jerk tofu, curry tofu, eggplant, and green beans. It was a mountain of food—super generous helpings, and a phenomenal value at $12.99. I especially love that you get such a nice variety. They also have some menu items that you can order, like various savory pies. I’d be keen to try some of those, as well.

I’m so happy that this place has gone completely vegan! I stopped in here for a small combo plate and loved every bite. I cannot wait to come back so that I can sample more of their items. What they lack in interior space (there is a modest dining area), they make up for in friendliness and tasty food.

Best Vegan Eats in New Haven - Edit
I haven’t been to New Haven for a couple of months and decided to come out to eat something filling and delicious. I was looking for something better than Claire’s Cornucopia. Now don’t get me wrong Claire’s is a dependable source for vegan options. But they are too expensive and never have the amount of flavor that I have just experienced here. The owners were lovely and have a warm and welcoming disposition. The food bar is adequately stocked with a variety of food but the best for me was the Jerk Tofu and the eggplant that they serve. It is spicy but I’m not one to shy away from the spice as I am of South American descent and eating jalapeños on a daily basis isn’t new to me. The place isn’t anything fancy but appearances are not the reflection of the food and how great it is. For all my vegan peeps I would recommend the market 100%.
