Good meals but not the greatest. - Edit
The Uba omelette with rice looked like the real thing, but was flavored very different. It was nice, filling, and certainly not bad, but I probably wouldn’t order it again. I’d try their other dishes first. The Sichuan style dandan noodles were similar - nice, filling, and certain not bad, but would probably look at other things to order next time.

Great staff and atmosphere though.

Great vegan lunch - Edit
We got the meal with tofu steak, miso cutlets and gozen. It came with heaps of little side dishes. On the pricier side, but more food than usual so I didn’t leave hungry. All the food was tasty. Service was good. #Veganuary

This is a spacious and perhaps the best vegan restaurant in Kyoto; if not the whole of Japan.

Great lunch - Edit
I got the full lunch plate and it was honestly quite delicious. It was a lot of food, but also didn't feel super heavy.
Read moreI was quite disappointed by the tiramisu parfet, it was super cold, almost frozen, so it barely tasted like anything. The tiramisu itself was also quite cookie-like, which was not great.
Pros: Great food
Cons: Disappointing parfet

Delicious Fusion Japanese-American Food - Edit
My husband and I really enjoyed our lunch at Mumokuteki Café.
Read moreWe were lucky that there were a few free tables when we arrived during the lunch hour and we could be seated without a wait.
I ordered the Mysterious Curry with two mock-meat side dishes - the okaraage nuggets and the miso cutlets. The Mysterious Curry was two different curries - a spicy/hot one and a milder one and they were both delicious and complimented each other, perfectly. The mock-meat side dishes were just OK, a bit oily/bland and nothing special. The vegetables on top of the curries were my favourite part, very fresh and delicious.
My husband had the Tofu Hamburger Steak and Okaraage-Gozen set meal and loved all the dishes.
We shared a tiramisu parfait for dessert and it was fabulous!
Overall, a delicious, filling meal with good, quick service.

Vegan Cafe offering lots of meal set options. Our favourite part of the meal was the fried okara which tasted like mock KFC chicken bites. Relaxing atmosphere of Japanese / scandi vibes. Lovely space!

Disappointed :( - Edit
After reading the recent reviews for here and Ain Soph we decided this place was a safe bet... Sadly the food we received was quite bland and the dessert (parfait) was not good. I did the large platter with three items with wee sides (miso cutlets, okra bites and burger patty with salad, pickles, and other bits and pieces) and my wife got the omelette rice. It all looked great, mostly (the 'omelette' was undercooked/ runny), but it was downhill from there sadly (okra bites were great though).
Read moreFor the parfait's (2) it seems they'd either prep'd and frozen the base, including fruit, then added the ice-cream and tiramusu before serving with some more frozen fruit on top. It was quite icy throughout, with a bland jelly in the bottom and partly frozen, crumbly cake.
In the last few days we've been really lucky overall so this was a bit of a bummer, especially as recent reviews from others had been so good :(

Excellent lunch in nice surrounds - Edit
We ordered the “Mumokuteki 3 kinds of special gozen”. It was beautifully presented and had lots of different side dishes to taste. We followed it with a jelly-like dessert , which came with yummy condiments. I think it was warambimochi which I had read about it as a specialty of this region and had been wanting to try. I was so happy to see they offered it in this all vegan cafe (saw it on the Japanese menu but not the English one) so I could be sure it didn’t have any gelatine in it. It was delicious! Would definitely recommend this place.

Amazing desserts - Edit
A great place to convince a non vegan that vegan desserts can be yummi! Tiramisu and cheesecake made of cashew milk. Best dessert ever! The setting is a great spot for a break in the busy Nishiki district. There ls an elevator avalaible ( strollers/wheelchairs), however not easy to find.

Loved it!! - Edit
I had a delightful meal here. Really enjoyed the Balance of pickles, rice, tempura, style, vegetables, salad in the lunch I had. There was even a tiny glass of vegetable juice in the middle of the tray with all the food. Very special and a lovely atmosphere, great attentive staff. I also had a super yummy Matcha smoothie style drink to finish. I’m certainly recommending this place and they have some information about their sustainability and their ethics on the front of the menu which is great to read about.

Better than expected food, a tad tricky to find - Edit
It took us two attempts to actually find this place, it's on the second floor and the entrance is in the back of a rather large shop selling a whole bunch of eco-fashion stuff. But I'm glad we kept trying as the food was very good and the portions were excellent.
Read moreSet meals consisting of a few main choices with a host of side dishes that go along. We each got a different one and both were very tasty. We finished off with some vegan ice cream, my partner loved it, I thought that part was a bit average & icy.
For a place that was a touch hard to find, there was easily 15 people waiting to go up when it opened (we arrived like 10 minutes before it opened). It's a fair size place upstairs so that wasn't an issue and in true Japanese fashion, they opened the doors the exact minute that they said they would.
Pros: tasty food, good portions
Cons: challenging to find
