One of the best in Kyoto!!

Reliable quality over the years. I can't even count anymore how many times I've eaten here. 😆
Their teishoku sets are amazing! So yummy and healthy! And I love that they have milk shakes, which are so rare vegan!
Very spacious, so fits a lot of people.
On weekends I recommend going early or to reserve.

Not Vegan Restaurant

I was really looking forward to visiting the restaurant. Unfortunately we didnt realise the use of fish and honey within their menu and ordered something that clearly included fish 😟

Mumokuteki is 100% vegan. It's clearly stated on their homepage. What made you think there were animal products used?

Good tiramisu

We had the tiramisu and the soy milk strawberry. I liked the Tiramisu, but my partner was a little more critical. The strawberry soy milk was frozen, and even the strawberry on top was frozen, so it wasnt as enjoyable as I wished it to be. The ice as it had a light strawberry flavour, but no flavor beneath that.

One of my favorite vegan restaurants in Japan

I really loved Mumokuteki. The staff is very friendly, the food is great and it's in a nice, central location. Some of the staff know a bit of English so there wasn't any problem ordering. I got the "3 kinds of special set meal" so it had a little of everything. It was all really tasty, especially the fried okara surprisingly. It's just an overall really great meal and you get to try so many different foods. This is a winner for sure and I would love to come back.

Pros: Big, huge portions with a wide variety of foods, Friendly staff

Parfait was ok but not what I was expecting

I couldn’t resist a tiramisu dessert, the first since I’ve been in Japan. I also had an iced soy latte which was nice and strong. My partner had the cheesecake and a strawberry milkshake.
The tiramisu parfait looked amazing. The piece of tiramisu slice was delicious. The soft serve, which I had been looking forward to, was very icy and didn’t taste like other soy soft serve I’ve had. It wasn’t creamy. The berries seemed to be frozen too. It was ok, the sauce was fine, but I was expecting more for 1300 yen.

My partner said he cheesecake was ok and same for the milkshake.

The setting is nice and the staff are kind. The other meals that came out looked amazing but I would recommend getting dessert elsewhere.Perhaps they are premade and they need to leave them out to defrost a bit longer.

A must visit

The staff and atmosphere are great - a truly authentic Japanese experience. I had the mumokuteki 3 kind set and it was so filling but so tasty (the miso cutlets stood out for me) but I couldn’t help but finish the lot. I’ll definitely be back for the omuraisu and some of the desserts

Great vegan set

The protein options were great(the cutlets and okarage were my favorite, but some of the sides weren’t for me as they had a flavor that reminded me of tuna, which I didn’t like even before going vegan. Though I was seated quickly, the food took a while to come out. On the bright side, they offer a variety of desserts, which I loved. The seasonal cheesecake, in particular, was one of the best vegan cheesecakes I've had!

Pros: Variety, Healthy

Cons: Long wait time for food

Delicious food and large selection.

Awesome completely vegan spot in the Nishiki-Market area. It is located in the second floor above the mumokuteki store. You can go inside either through the mall side or from the street.

They offer tons of options from ramen, curry, omelets to great set menus. Also sweets like cake, ice etc. They will provide you with an english menu.

I took the mumokuteki 3 kinds of special set and it was fantastic.

Clear recommendation if you are nearby.

Pros: Nice, fast service., Big completely vegan selection., Card payment option.

Mumokuteki café & foods Kyoto

Looooove this place! One of my most favorite vegan place in Japan, Mumokuteki offers a diverse menu with amazing flavors. Their Gozen set meals include a main, side dishes, miso soup, and rice. The food are made from healthy, plant0based options making them guilt free to enjoy! Nice cafe but beware if you are the last sitting

We booked for the last 'tea' sitting at 1630. When we arrived a sign said it was closed so we waited in the area that said staff would come to greet us. Our mistake as we were meant to go upstairs past the closed sign. We ordered two of the large plates which were tasty enough and then went to order dessert but by that point the kitchen was closed. Again, our fault as we had not realised. The entire time the staff were cleaning round about us so it felt like we were in welcome. It was nice but we had better experiences in other restaurants.

Fantastic spot

the selection of food is great, every plate was delicious, but for a very hungry person, might be a little bit unsatisfying. I loved it there though, highly recommend!
Really regret not trying the vegan ice cream, it looked delicious, maybe next time!

Great place for a set lunch

Mumokuteki has to be one of my favorite places I visited in Kyoto!
The place is very beautiful, with clean and natural decor. I ordered the set lunch with vegan hamburger. The food was healthy and delicious. I really appreciated the presentation of the dish as well and the variety of sides it came with.
Very kind service, they also accept card payments.

Pros: Lovely atmosphere, Presentation of the food

Homey with tasty food

This was our first stop in Kyoto after a day of traveling, and we were set to get some nutritious and healthy food.

We ordered a set with 3 main dishes and 3 side dishes, which included 3 types of “meat” - breaded miso tofu cutlet, tofu burger steak and okara karaage. The miso tofu and okaraage were delicous, howerer the steak was really mushy and pretty bland. Set came with rice, pickles, shredded chilled potatoes, vegetable juice shot, a one halved grape and miso soup. Everything was tasty and freshly made, even though a bit more fruit would be preferred.

We also ordered omurice which was very filling and it came hot. However taste wise it was a bit too salty and that was about it, no additional flavours.

For the dessert we’ve shared tiramisu parfait and lemonade. Both were very good, with the tiramisu being the star of the show.

The cafe was clean, spacious and with a homey feel-good vibe. Staff is also very polite and they have english speaking personel as well as an english menu. The only downside is the price. It’s not a place for casual, cheap meal.

Healthy and tasty

We ordered the Japanese Gozen plate, a combination of multiple small dishes, which we really liked because we could try a bit of everything.
Three types of fried mock meat, a mizo soup, coleslaw, salad, rice...It feels like a healthy meal while being very tasty.
For 800yens we got the menu which includes a drink and a soy ice cream, which doesn't feel heavy or too sweet.
The only down side was that it was too cold inside, there were 35°C outside and the turned the air conditioner really strong.

Cons: Cold room

Quality food

Food was very healthy but still interesting. They have some nice homemade sodas too. There's a really nice shop attached.
The cafe is upstairs, but use the stairs that are by the open street entrance, not the covered street entrance. It took us a bit to figure that out... it should be obvious immediately when you go upstairs if it's the correct one!

Great vegan food

For lunch we had the Japanese Gozen plate, with many little dishes. Comes also as a set with a drink and soft serve ice cream. We only didn’t like one dish, everything else was tasty.
As someone wrote before that they felt cheated with only half of a small strawberry: we didn’t get any strawberry, only two little pieces of melon. ;)

We came back later that day for “Kaffeetrinken” in the afternoon. We got the tiramisu parfait and a strawberry milkshake. Both very tasty and great. But the milkshake was more like liquid ice cream than something to drink, but we liked it!

Both times, the restaurant wasn’t crowded and we got easily a seat without reservation.

Pros: Vegan desserts
