A few options

Although they only have a couple of options, the Impossible burger was excellently prepared. Most places just throw it on a bun (usually cooked to a cinder) with some lettuce and onion and whatever condiments they remember to bring. This place toasted the buns, didn't overcook the patty, had actual vegan cheese to put on it plus a vegan burger sauce and excellent pickles.

Also, the fries were good.

Pros: Great patio , Attention to detail on the food, Good service

Cons: Only a couple of vegan options

Inedible

Summer 2024: only two options, a coconut curry and Beyond burger. Both listed as GF available and vegetarian available. I specified vegan and GF, and also ordered a salad vegan.
The salad came out with cheese, which they fixed. The coconut curry was a tiny portion with maybe 6 beans in the “rice and beans” and the curry was so spicy I couldn’t eat it. Both the rice and slaw tasted very buttery and based on my stomach cramps I’d say it wasn’t vegan.
My v/gf mom has a garlic allergy, and each dish they brought her had garlic.

The atmosphere outside is nice, and in the past they have offered good dishes (a tofu stir fry that was yummy), but I’d be hard pressed to return here. I have no confidence they understand “vegan” and I’m not interested in paying $29 for something I can’t stomach eating.

Pros: Nice garden seating

Cons: No understanding of dietary concerns, No reservations for outside seating , Inedible food

Fair

I had the mushroom risotto. It was decent but not worth 30$. They didn’t have a ton of vegan options.

Pros: A few vegan options, Downtown

Cute place for a good dinner

Bar Harbor could have more vegan options but Mckays had a really lovely patio with several items on the menu. Including a vegan tomato soup, Brussels, vegan burger and a curry dish. I had the vegan burger, came on a pretzel bun with a yummy sauce. It was the best burger I had in bar harbor.

Pros: Has appetizer options that are vegan , Tasted good

Cons: Small portion for the price

Fantastic

There are a few vegan and gluten free options on the menu and everything I had was delicious. The service was awesome. I had the Brussel Sprouts and the Jamaican Coconut Curry and both were amazing. They also have an impossible burger and a tomato soup on the menu that are vegan.

Pros: Great service, Delicious food, Knowledgeable staff

Bland and overpriced

As of June 2021, they offer a vegan stir fry and an impossible burger. The stir fry was very bland, and they didn’t prepare the snow peas properly (left on the stem or whatever that top string is). The burger requires two $2 up charges to make it vegan (cheese and bun), but the menu doesn’t specify that it’s an up charge. We ended up spending $18 on the crappy stir fry and $19 on the burger, although the menu would have you believe it costs $15. Overall it was a nice outdoor finer dining experience, but overpriced for the quality of the vegan food.

Pros: Two vegan entrees, Great outdoor dining space

Cons: Overpriced , Bland/dry vegan options

Okay in a Pinch

I came right when they opened, so I didn’t have to wait long at all. Food was served almost immediately after ordering. The kung pao brussels were absolute incredible and would recommend for sure. I appreciate the addition of vegan cheese on the impossible burger, however their vegan bun was super crumbly and did not stay together. Chips were also bland. The brussel sprouts were $10 and the burger was between $13-15, so it was pretty expensive. It wasn’t the worst food but i think there’s better in Bar Harbor for vegan options

Pros: great brussel sprouts , quick service

Cons: expensive, disintegrating bun , bland chips

Burger and brussies

They have a pretty good vegan burger and vegan bun. Plus the Brussels sprouts app is vegan.

Cons: Not too many options

Not many vegan options but...

There was at least one fully vegan option on the menu, mushroom tortellini, and it was delicious! Also have Impossible burger but no vegan bun.

Very good but only one dinner option!

We only had one dinner option which was a vegan tortellini with mushrooms and tomato sauce. It was excellent, and we paired it with a green salad without the cheese. Food was delicious but this was the only vegan option at dinner. Excellent service, friendly staff, nice ambiance.

Pros: Friendly staff, nice ambiance ( old house beautifully decorated)

Cons: Only one vegan option

Stay away

I came here expecting to order the Impossible burger or vegan risotto but they no longer carry either. I ordered the falafel. I don't know how they make it but it was absolutely disgusting. It does not taste like any falafel I've ever had in my life. The inside was runny, unlike falafel, and tasted like they put cheese in it. I asked my sister to try it and she actually spit it out of her mouth. On top of this it took our server 10 minutes to even take our drink order.

Pros: Lemonade was good!

Cons: Gross food that was expensive

Fine but not thrilling

Menu items for vegans included a few salads (hold the cheese), the falafel (hold the cheese and yogurt), and a vegan stir fry. No longer carries burgers or risotto. The food was good and very fresh but nothing to get too excited about.

The atmosphere was really cute and it was a lifesaver in an area with few vegan options, and it had a great beer list. Prices were high for what you got, which is to be expected in a tourist town, but was still a little sticker-shocking.

Pros: Great beer list , Fresh ingredients, Tons of seating

Cons: Expensive, Vegan options are uninspired, even though tasty

Disappointing

My husband who Is not vegan always makes me pick where we go out to be sure I can eat something. I settled on McKays with plans of getting the Impossible Burger. No Burgers!! so I got the falafel minus the feta and tzatziki. Worst falafel EVER, it was gross, not sure how they could even call It falafel. Seemed like flavorless hummus was somehow rolled in a ball, coated and deep fried. They were flavorless mush balls. So very disappointing.

Not very vegan friendly

Nice place. Great outdoor patio/garden.
However, the only 2 items you can make vegan are:
1. The falafel platter (without the Tzatziki sauce)=$16.
2. The stir-fry vegetables: $18 and add $5 if you want to add Tofu.
We left and went next door to Jalapeño's to share one Veggie Fajita for $15.

Pros: 2 vegan options., Pretty place.

Cons: Expensive

Not bad, not great.

Nice atmosphere, good drinks. Not a lot of vegan options. Impossible Burger was overcooked and on a dry roll with unimaginative toppings. Great sweet potato fries. Not bad but especially for the price it could be better.

Pros: Some vegan options.

Good food, good staff

I’ve been in Bar Harbor for 4 days, and ate dinner in McKay’s 3 times. There’s not a lot of vegan choice - either an impossible burger, or a risotto (and I think there was a salad as well). The burger was fantastic every time - with vegan cheese and all. The risotto was a bit bland the first time, so the second time we’ve asked to spice it up a bit, and it made a big difference.

Pros: Friendly staff, Really good impossible burger

Cons: Pricey , Not a lot of vegan options
