Family Owned Sweet Shop

This small business has been run by Aki’s family for generations. While we looked at the desserts in the case, he served us complimentary dessert samples, soy ice cream, and green tea. Please note, he is very familiar with veganism and let us know that the doriyaki is NOT vegan.

Pros: Vegan options, Friendly service , Family owned

Best place ever

Aki was super welcoming and generous. Even though there were language barriers we managed to communicate using a mix of Google translate and Japanese phrases we have learned on the trip. I cannot reccomend this lovely place enough.

It is an experience on its own to visit the store

As others have said, the owner, now ~60 yo and having been creating these sweets for 40 years, is super sweet. Prepare for an unique experience, tea and tasting and small gifts probably, as you walk into the store.

Pros: Taste, Owner is really nice to meet, Tradition of 90 years of this shop shows

Exceptional service, unique candy

Experience exactly the same as previous reviewers. Everything vegan except the doroyaki. Fed us half the shop of free samples before we could buy anything, gave us some artwork and kept saying how happy he was to have us in the shop. Sweets are made with the local shrine water. He's like the Willy Wonka of Hakone, one of the sweets was even tomato flavour!

A must visit

The warmth, kindness and generosity of the owner cannot be overstated. He was so kind to give us so many samples to try before we purchased something. He used a translator so we could communicate and he expressed how grateful he was to meet us. He also gave us some prints of his artwork.

On top of all this, the sweets were absolutely amazing. He's been making sweets by hand for over 40 years, and you can tell. Everything we tried was delicious and he explained what ingredients were in each thing. You can see how proud he was of everything he made. Everything was very reasonably priced too, if not underpriced for the quality and care in the products. The shop is a 10 minute walk from the cable car down a steep hill, but I highly highly recommend a visit to this beautiful shop.

Everything but one item (dorayaki) was vegan.

Pros: Kind and generous owner, Delicious sweets, handmade, Everything but one item vegan

Awesome

a very small but incredibly great shop, the service was the best I have ever experienced, the owner is very, very friendly and was incredibly happy that we visited him. The sweets are all handmade and all but one of them is vegan, the homemade ice cream is highly recommended. He gave us pictures he had painted himself as a thank you for visiting him. We recommend.

Pros: friendly, Yummy
