I’m still dreaming abt this ramen - Edit
5 stars!!! I’m so sad I was only able to come here once - I can’t stop thinking about this ramen I need it again in my life immediately. It was so so tasty and satisfying with the thick broth and delicious noodles. The staff were great and service was quick!!

Amazing vegan Ramen - Edit
Both vegan options were incredible! 😍 The broth was super creamy and very flavourful. We ended up coming back here two days in a row. With just two of us, it was easy to secure a spot right away - if you’re a larger group I’d recommend securing a spot beforehand (there is also a huge second hand store very close to kill possible waiting time). We got served very quickly and left almost as fast, making room for others. Feels like this is the common procedure, but there are many bars nearby if you’d like to try them out or take a stroll on the riverside afterwards.

Delicious Soy Milk Broth Ramen - Edit
This ramen restaurant is tucked away in a laneway behind nishiki market. It has a beautiful atmosphere and 2 clearly labelled vegan ramen options. The soy milk broth was delicious.

Decent but inauthentic - Edit
The zesty broth was ok, it was salty and too peppery. At T’s TanTan I paid ¥980 for vegan ramen that actually included toppings (vs. ¥1600 here). The place doesn’t have the atmosphere of a ramen shop (loud music, loud conversations from others). The tea was bad.

Cons: No toppings on the ramen, Expensive for what it is, Inauthentic vibe, felt like european "ramen" shops

Super friendly and delicious vegan ramen - Edit
There are two vegan options and they are really super tasty!!! I will long for this ramen when I return home. The service was also extremely friendly and English-speaking. There are a lot of tourists here too, but that doesn't detract from the taste.
Pros: Tasty vegan ramen, Super friendly service , Small selection of good ramen

This ramen was so thick and delicious. The flavour was so good and pungent in the right ways.

Delicious but sooo busy!! - Edit
I will start by saying we queued for almost 2 hours to get in to this restaurant as booking isn't possible. While we normally wouldn't queue for so long, we decided to stick it out as this was one of the only places we could find for vegan, gluten free ramen in Kyoto.

Pros: Delicious , Gluten free, vegan options

Delicious - Edit
I had the zesty vegan ramen and it was delicious- very creamy broth with lots of scallions. For me, it could have been spicier but you can ask for more chile powder. They have two types of vegan ramen - both creamy broth. Definitely come here!

Delicious ramen! - Edit
Really great thick broth and chewy ramen in Kyoto! Amongst my top 3 vegan ramen’s in Japan. Would have given 5 but I feel like for the price, the toppings on the ramen could have been more generous. It did feel slightly like a tourist trap, as it was very obvious that there were no locals there at all and everyone dining were from overseas…

Very average at a high price. Poor customer service. - Edit
I really don’t get the Engine Ramen hype. My wife and I went on 29 November and found that it was not worth the 30 minute wait to get seated. The noodles to me had the texture of well cooked instant ramen. I would have been happy paying ¥1,000 or less for what we got. The manifesto on the back of the menu about the freshness and the quality of the ingredients amounts to nought because there was nothing exceptional about what I ordered: Zesty Ramen for Vegan.
Read moreTo add insult to injury, my wife asked for a Japanese menu and the waitress pretty much laughed in her face. We were sat on the counter and for the next 5 minutes the same waitress proceeded to tell each of her colleagues that came and left the kitchen about us asking for a Japanese menu and kept laughing about it. I overheard someone say that they used to have a Japanese menu but they didn’t print any since they updated the menu. I had to ask a second time for her to actually relay that information back to us. She was really unprofessional and made my wife feel like an inconvenience and a foreigner in her home country. Admittedly, Engine were fighting an uphill battle after that but I hoped that there would be something about the ramen that would blow us both away. It was all very average but at a higher price (for ramen). Having no Japanese menu to hand and being made to feel like we’re being audacious for asking for one, certainly hammered home that this place is and very much knows that it is a tourist trap.
If I was to overpay and wait for tourist trap ramen, I’d much rather go back to Uzu which we both enjoyed last June. We visited T’s Tantan when we were up in Tokyo, which beats Engine on all accounts: noodles, broth, toppings, price and most importantly, customer service.
Pros: Location
Cons: Poor customer service, No Japanese menu, Overpriced for what it is

Delicious ramen! - Edit
I was in Kyoto for 3 nights and ended up here every evening! I would plan somewhere else then it would be shut, or too busy, then I’d know that engine had my back. I tried both vegan options and they are both delicious. It’s a very touristy vibe but an easy place to go. SOLID!

Would be worth five stars! - Edit
The menu is short in general and there is only one vegan ramen, but it is delicious! It's so good that I went there twice, almost three times, during my stay in Kyoto. Also, it's one of the few restaurants that is open until 11pm. Further, if the place is busy, you'll get a waiting ticket but don't have to wait in line at the restaurant. E.g. they'll tell you to be back in 20 minutes and you can walk around the area in the meantime. And, last but not least, the staff super nice and helpful!

Get the spicy ramen. DO IT!!! - Edit
We popped into Kyoto engine ramen on a whim after being rejected from another vegan restaurant, it took them about 45 minutes to seat 6 of us which really is pretty good for such a large group on kyoto! They had 2 vegan options: one with a delicious creamy mild broth, the other with a broth which at first you think is actually pretty tame, but your mouth is on fire by the end of it and your [censored] is cursing you for the endeavours it will have to face in the coming hours. This is the one to get. While both of them are amazing, they used a chilli gin with Thai chilli to spice the ramen and it is probably the most unique (and painful) ramen I’ve ever tasted. Makes me real sad to be leaving Kyoto because I’d easily polish off that bowl another 100 times, much to my [censored]’s dismay.

Bit disappointed - Edit
Visited back in 2019 when I thought it was the most delicious ramen I’d ever tasted, was excited to return on this visit, however the whole experience was a bit of a miss. We arrived and was given a number and asked to queue outside, we waited but saw groups of the same number being seated before us and it happened they forgot we existed.
Read more2 types of vegan ramen on offer, perhaps should have got the zesty ramen as the other was bland, ingredients were sparse and nothing offered any density. Noodles tasted like they were out a badly made instant ramen.
Sake offered was ‘smooth’, ‘dry’ or ‘sweet’, but personally prefer to see brands and try them out. Felt a bit condescending.
Left having not finished either my ramen or sake, with a bad taste in my mouth.
