Reservations Needed - Edit
We called 4 times to make a reservation, as it was a special occasion today and couldn’t get through, so we decided to just show up and wouldn’t mind waiting for a table. The drive was about an hour and after arriving, we and another group were turned away. The hostess said it’s reservation only. They refused to accommodate us. I wish they would have specified this on HappyCow. It was quite disappointing that they couldn’t even accommodate us for drinks or something. There are not many vegan options in town so turning people away means we have to go support non vegan places. A big let down. There were some tables free and we wouldn’t have minded occupying them until the reservation times or people arrived.

This happened to me at the "vegan" cat cafe in Rome, rather they wouldn't seat me for dining alone, but similar. I have since decided that "cats as spectacle / entertainment" while dining is thoroughly zoolike and an un-vegan concept and was happy to have not have participated by good fortune of the staff being jerky.

I considered the same. I’ve seen cat cafes where the cats are cared for and adopted, and cat cafes where the cats are in glass boxes with locks on them. I didn’t get to see what kind this one was, but maybe it’s for the best. Pets in general are quite controversial among the vegan community because they’re kind of emotional slaves and the language we use as well (“owners”, the pet “ran away”, practices like keeping them in chains or leashes, etc.) is very telling. If a pet leaving is “escaping” or “running away”, do they really want to be there to begin with and why force them? Anyways, like you said, probably for the best.

Spot on. All individuals have the right to live amongst their own species without human interaction. The term I use is "comfort slaves" as that's most accurate to me. Yes, human bred animals do require shelter and food, but let's be real, less than one percent will provide vegan diets with synthetic taurine to these cats and will be paying into the animal abuse industry to feed them an unnatural and deadly diet of heavily adulterated and contaminated factory livestock victims which again tortures more enslaved animals of less preferred species. The most vegan activity is not to keep animals as pets at all and not to use them as a gimmick for providing dining entertainment. I boycott these places now entirely and find them gross, not to mention the level of toxmoplasmia gondii that's probably in the air while dining.

Ooo very well said. I struggle to find the words to express some of these feelings, but you do it well. Especially about the purchasing of factory made “pet food”. It makes me very uncomfortable how some vegans can discuss cognitive dissonance for meat eaters, but then don’t think twice about buying pet food. Anyways, this is the first Vegan Cat Cafe I’ve ever seen or even heard of, so I was looking forward to ask questions, such as if the pet food is vegan and where do the cats go when the place closes. If the food served to non customers (the cats) is not vegan, is it still a vegan cafe?

Vegans telling me they buy meat for their trapped indoor animals (even rescues) are telling me simply they misuse the term vegan. It's a simple trolly question. One cat, versus 100 livestock animals per year for food? I choose the greater good without prejudice, always. Most never even try vegan diets for their animals rescue or otherwise. It's a bizarre ignorance. Millions of cats are killed every year in shelters, lots of them would eat the vegan pet food, if I had a rescue cat that refused to eat the vegan stuff, I'd simply trade them in for another one that did. It's a cruel reality, but picking the comfort of one doomed animal simply to doom thousands more across their lifespan is a real head scratcher to this anti-speciesist.

It would be interesting to poll the people running these cat cafes wround the world about the cat food, I'd be shocked if any owners were vegan and more so if the cat food was. Synthetic taurine is added to industrial cat food anyway, the excuses never hold up. I would strongly suspect these proprietors of animals for dining entertainment are typical capitalists using a gimmick for profit while exploiting not just animals but the people who care about them. Vegans who truly care about animals, leave them alone. Who would want to live their life as a cuddle object? Calling a person a "pet" is derogatory and objectify. True human - animal friendships are consensual. I wouldn't want to be groped by some needy weirdo all day long in exchange for being de-sexed and denied my freedom. (Well, and if I were, that would be my choice!) :D

Very well put. This part of picking the comfort of one doomed animal simply to doom thousands more- oof I have to remember that one for when I encounter those vegans and this conversation. I thought the same, but constructing the feelings and ideas into words is still a challenge in some cases. Thanks for sharing this.
Read moreAbout being a human pet, well pet play in the BDSM community is well known and loved, but consent truly is the key. Many animals could happily choose to not have to search for food or shelter again and let a human take care of them, but usually they do so for a season. People who live near forests often see the same animal yearly. They can take your home as a safe space to birth children for example or come when they can’t find food elsewhere. Also in the cold winters, the take shelter under porches, but they leave when the season ends and return to their free lives til next winter. That’s not unheard of and I think if we want to build relationships with animals where we care for them, we can and they absolutely have the ability to consent. Not a pet. A friend who visits and stays sometimes.

5 Stars for the cute cats and the food - Edit
On 16.11.2022 the Katzentempel has opened in Bochum.
Read moreThe cats are sooo cute and some are really relaxed despite the hustle and bustle of a busy cafe.
The food is very tasty. I recommend the cakes, the chai latte and the temple sandwich. Yummy!
The staff is friendly.
Currently there are still "teething problems" (meaning initial difficulties) like lack of staff, shortened opening hours, not everything from the menu is available & sudden closures.
My suggestions for improvement:
🐈 The restrooms could be better maintained!
On both of my visits, one of the ladies' cubicles was broken, there was nothing to dry your hands, the toilet paper was empty....
🐈 Better cat toys! Unfortunately there were no interactive toys for humans & cats.
With interactive toys I mean something that the guest holds in one hand and a cat plays on the other end, like shoelaces / cords, cat waggler or cat dangler toys.
It would be great if at least non dangerous shoelaces / cords were provided (handed out upon request).
Unfortunately, there are only balls / things to throw, but the cats do not find them very interesting.
About interactions with cords, on the other hand, they are extremely excited and also the guests have fun to play interactively with the cats. 😊
🐈 Outdoor menu! I saw many curious people in front of the window when leaving the cat café. I was asked the question what kind of food is available in the cat cafe.
It would be valuable if there would be a menu outside / in the window to look at.
I will continue to be a guest and am curious about the development.
Pros: Cats, Cats, Cats, Everything vegan, Friendly employees
Cons: unkempt toilet
