Jay Mai Jam Jay, Chiang Mai

I ate here last night. It doesn't appear to be geared up for non Thai customers but that doesn't mean we were made to feel unwelcome. I regret to say that my Thai is near non existent and none of the staff seemed to speak English. Never fear, a couple of helpful Thai customers in there sprung to the rescue and helped out.

The food was tasty and inexpensive.

Pros: Tasty and inexpensive, Helpful clientele

Doesn't appear to be vegan

We were looking forward to this place but ended up leaving without eating, as we found out despite the name it's veggie rather than vegan and establishing what's vegan or not proved too difficult (partly because of the English / Thai language barrier but also didn't feel the staff really grasped the difference between veggie and vegan). It's a buffet style place with food on show, could see signs of dairy e.g. Cheese on pizzas, and showing them the V-Cards app (local translations for vegan) just got a laugh and a shake of the head from the staff.

Delicious vegan food behind Chiang Mai University.

This restaurant is on Suthep Rd. behind CMU. The whole street is full of restaurants. Jay Mai Jam Jay means extraordinary vegan or not so ordinary vegan. They have a variety of food and everything we tried, we liked. The rice dish is delicious, the thick Tom Yum soup is better than a fancy restaurant. They offer MANY Thai salads. A friend told me that their mushroom salad is awesome.
After 6pm, they get in spicy curry rice salad (Namm-Klook, แหนมคลุก) from another vendor packed in a bag on the counter, those are the bomb. I always get two for myself and it runs out by 7.30.
They also have hot pot soup, which is interesting, but we haven't tried. Their fried rice cake appetizer (Northern local food called Kao-Ram-Furn, ข้าวแรมฟืน) inside the front glass display is pretty good, but a little greasy. It comes with an interesting sweet, spicy sauce.
One of our most visited vegan restaurants.
