Authentic Mexican Food with Great Vegan Options

My husband and I celebrated his birthday at Hugo’s and were really pleased with the vegan options. We used to eat at Hugo’s before we went plant-based so weren’t sure what our options would be. The vegan options were creative and healthy. We didn’t feel like we were compromising the authentic Mexican food or our health. I had the HUARACHE, large masa cake shaped like a shoe, wild mushrooms, rajas, refritos, pipian verde, crema, queso fresco, veganized. There was even a chocolate vegan dessert, PASTEL DE CHOCOLATE,
Chef Ruben’s vegan chocolate cake, Silk vegan chocolate frosting, macerated cherries. And it came with vegan sherbet, a candle and “happy birthday” written in chocolate on the plate. The customer service is extraordinary in their follow-up after dinner.

Ask for the vegetarian menu

They have a vegetarian menu with 5-6 items that can be made vegan. Nice atmosphere and food is pretty good!

Will accommodate vegans

This is a heavily meat-centric, upscale restaurant with a small vegetarian menu that can be modified to suit vegans. The food was delicious, flavorful and tasted like authentic Mexican rather than Tex-mex. The reason I give it 3 stars instead of 4: 1) No vegan protein - just carbs and veggies, which meant the food didn’t really fill me up, 2) No vegan dairy substitutes - their vegan version of a vegetarian dish is to just leave out the queso and the crema and 3) The waitstaff who seemed annoyed that I requested him to help me order vegan food 🤷🏻‍♀️

I ordered the enchiladas placeras (‘deconstructed’ enchiladas with lots of veggies), minus the queso and crema, and the repollitos (charred Brussels sprouts and salsa minus the cotija cheese) - both were delicious.

Overall, I would recommend this place if you are dining with a group of omnivores and didn’t have a more vegan-friendly option.

Great Tasting Food!!

I recommend this restaurant more for dinner time then lunch or brunch. There weren't really any vegan items on the menu when I went there for lunch the other day-luckily the special of the day was a vegetarian item that was made vegan for me when I asked. The chef's are very accommodating here though and if you ask, they will normally whip you up something good. I had a poblano stuffed with sweet potato, apples, walnuts and a bunch of other deliciousness. The walnut cream sauce was vegetarian, but not vegan. They switched the sauce out for me to make mine vegan. That dish was pretty freaking amazing and I am hoping they keep it on the menu forever and not just seasonally.

Overall, everything at Hugo's has great flavor. Bigger portion sizes for lunch & dinner, smaller portion sizes for the brunch menu. Kind of pricey, but 100% worth it every time I've been. Nice atmosphere too- great date night place for vegans & non vegans.

Pros: Vegan Options- lots can be made vegan too if you a, Excellent food, Great Atmosphere and Drinks

Cons: Kind of Expensive, Valet Parking Only, Not as many vegan options on lunch menu as dinner

Great for a special occasion, some vegan options

I went to Hugo's for a special occasion, because it is known to be a little pricey. The ambience is perfect for a date night. Inside the large menu binder with pages and pages of wines and mezcals is also the vegetarian/vegan menu. There are 3 items labelled vegan and most of the vegetarian dishes could be altered to be dairy-free. I ordered the croquetes de papa entree. The platter centerpiece was a pan fried thick potato pancake seasoned to perfection atop a bed of garlic sautéed greens. The side was grilled squash, carrots and asparagus spears. The sauce was a dark red with a deep flavor and a little spice. It was absolutely delicious (and not that expensive, but also not that filling)

Pros: Excellent food, Romantic Ambience, Friendly Staff

Cons: Expensive, Parking

High props to Hugo's

Do not discount Hugo's. This is an higher end resto known for its delicious authentic Mexican food (supposedly George Bush Sr's favourite restaurant). Their menu is primarily meat but they have a whole page of their menu dedicated to vegetarian options (also half the price of the meat dishes). Vegan options are listed on their printed menu (not online). Most have cheese but they were really accommodating to make my meal vegan. Their veg platter plate was delicious. I had to swap a few items but I loved the fresh veg options. Of note, their refried beans are not vegan but if you call in advance they can make a vegan batch for you (they told me it would take a 30 minute lead time). Recommended.

Pros: lots of vegetables, very accomodating

Top Houston Restaurant

Their food is amazing! This is typical interior Mexican cuisine, creatively and beautifully executed. During early summer they offer an array of squash blossom items. Many vegetarian items have cheese or egg, but they do offer a few vegan items, and will prepare to meet specific requests. Sometimes I simply order refried beans, Mexican rice, and handmade corn tortillas - YUMMY! Lentil cakes are good, Chile Rellenos are excellent. You just can't order something there that's not awesome. Sunday brunch is terrific.

Pros: decor and patio, food is amazing, wait staff are charming

Cons: interior can be noisy
