Visiting Bendigo and looking for a vegan lunch, Mexican corn fritters were lovely and always nice to fine a vegan donut.

Disappointing - Edit
I had high hopes for Hoo Gah. Since Adam and Eve closed and with the vegan menu it felt like it had potential to be my new go to place in Bendigo but it was honestly nothing like previous reviews have stated. Not sure if it was a bad day or something, but the service was terrible. Girl who showed us to a table was rude, like she didn't want us to be there. Got the Buddha bowl which was the least inspring Buddha bowl I've ever had. We asked for extra tofu, charged an extra $5 for one extra thin piece. No sign of anything like a vegan bakery which had been mentioned here either. Left feeling sad as I really wanted to support this place since they are at least doing vegan options, but Whole Foods down the road is better food, better value and better service. Won't be going back.

I really enjoyed this place - Edit
I live in Melbourne but come to Bendigo regularly, often staying for a weekend.
Read moreThe vegan restaurant choices are noticeably more limited here. According to @happycow I don’t believe there is a fully vegan cafe/restaurant in Bendigo. There are 2 vegetarian cafes , both having very small menus and limited hours. And a few places that will cater to vegans, some where you have to ask and hope that truly understand what vegans eat and some with a full menu with v or vg to indicate Egan options.
Today I discovered @hoogah and was impressed that they have a separate vegan menu.
I was lucky to have a chat with the owner/chef Gina (such a nice lady) and I discovered
- [ ] The opening hours have been reduced due to the impact of Covid. They are now open Tue - Sat morning and early afternoon only
- [ ] They do vegan fine dining dinners 4 times a year advertised on their Facebook page for around $75 all you can eat
- [ ] They have a separate vegan menu which is so much better than other places in Bendigo. Makes it so much easier to see what is available and not make a mistake.
- [ ] They are planning on expanding the vegan menu to incorporate the specials on the board to make them a permanent offering
- [ ] Gina explained that her focus with the cafe was to avoid processed and mock foods and focus on more whole foods in the menu.
- [ ] Although not always on the menu, Gina said they would do vegan pancakes if requested (my wife was very excited by this)
- [ ] Parking is difficult. It’s in a busy part of Bendigo, I had difficulty finding a parking spot and even then had to pay a fee.
I’m looking forward to going again, I had the vegan flatbread with mushroom from the blackboard and it was delicious. I’m looking forward to trying more items from their vegan menu on my next visit
Pros: Separate vegan menu, Friendly service
Cons: Not fully vegan, Difficult parking

I recommend you go early on a Saturday for the vegan bakery. Most of the savoury items were gone by 12. But the vegan special was delicious - eggplant fried in chickpea batter, with interesting salad, vegan feta, etc. $21 but huge.

Awful - Edit
I am cealiac and asked for GF bread, didn't know at the time but I was served regular bread. Had to wait an hour for food because they lost my docket and kept saying that they were busy making it. Overly priced food as well

Hoo Gran oh Laaaaaa - Edit
How exciting to find this place, with lots of vegan options in Bendigo.
Read moreEnjoyed my visit recently, where I sat in the sun and people watched. The coffee was lovely, but the granola was something I came to crave the next day, it was that good. With (almond) milk served on the side (so I didn't have to drown the granola) and a good amount of fresh fruit and coconut yogurt. It really was perfect
Friendly service, welcoming ambience and they seemed to have a good amount of vegan treats and specials too.
Pros: Good value, Vegan awareness and options

Delish vegan options - Edit
The core menu is limited with strictly vegan options but most of the daily specials were vegan. I had the special bao buns (like a steamed bun but like a wrap) with gorgeous marinated mushrooms, veg and tangy sauce. Not a bad size for the price ($17 see photo).
Read moreMy wife had a menu item, the pan fried sesame/panko crusted tofu on a bed of zoodles and other veg in a very tasty Asian sauce. Staff was friendly and the place is in a prime location with a good vibe.
Pros: Awesome daily vegan specials, Food is perfect, Great location
Cons: Slightly on the high side for price

Hoo-gah is my go to place in Bendigo for a delicious and healthy vegan meal! Their menus change every week, so you’re guaranteed to never get bored. Honestly, I’ve been going to hoo-gah on a regular basis for a very long time and not once have I bought something bad or not left feeling energised by great, healthy food! I honestly cannot recommend this place enough, I love it!!

Pretty Good - Edit
Been here a couple of times, the vegan specials seem to be the way to go, whereas the Buddha bowls are usually a bit disappointing as they could easily be something I make at home (simple veg, rice, tofu or beans kinda deal).

Good spot for a basic breaky - Edit
Had breakfast with friends recently. Very friendly staff, busy little spot. No vegan options on the menu but when we asked for toast with some extras and no butter, our waitress quickly picked up on it and offered us vegan butter. Greatly appreciated. Vegan specials on the board (nothing available at breakfast the day we were there) & a couple of vegan cakes in the counter window. Thanks
