Repeat visitors! - Edit
We ate here twice during our week in Kona and were super happy with our choices both times. We came hungry after a full day of being on the water and scuba diving, and Herbivores didn't disappoint. Their "paper bacon" was fantastic and super unique -- definitely recommend! We also indulged one night and tried a piece of chocolate cake, which was moist and super tasty. If you're looking for a filling, low-key spot for a vegan meal, this place is for you!

Small restaurant where you can walk up and order and eat on the patio or use their drive thru! Huge menu with tons of options!
Read more**** Changing my original review. We went there twice in the last week since my original 5 star review. We used the drive thru and walk up. Both times the same dark haired young woman was using the F word over and over again during her loud conversation with coworkers. We have small children with us and staff should realize everyone can hear them. We can see them on their phones, hear them goofing off and hear them cursing. When I used the walk up the cursing girl completely ignored me even though she was closest to me. And another girl near the drive thru window just stared at me a minute until she finally decided to come take my order. I felt awkward and like I was interrupting. It’s irritating to see a business being ran by a bunch of 20 something hipsters that act like they have something better they could be doing.

Saved us - Edit
We were so starving when we arrived on the big Island. This was our first stop. They have a lot of options but their menus are only served at specific times. There is a breakfast menu, lunch menu, and dinner menu. Some of the items overlap onto the different menus but many items are only served during particular times. Everything looked like it was pretty healthy and whole food- based. We ordered two burger plates, the jackfruit nachos, and the tuna salad. The “tuna” part of my salad was amazing but the salad part was a little boring. The jackfruit nachos were amazing. The burgers were a letdown, because we thought they were house-made burgers, but it looked like they were prepackaged. The burgers were served with just a handful of packaged chips. Overall it was good, and we hope to return.

Delicious easy option - Edit
We really enjoyed our lunch at Herbivores; plenty of open-air seating, and my nachos were delicious. I'm not usually a fan of jackfruit, but they may have converted me--it wasn't overwhelmed by the usual tropical fruit sweet taste that makes me not like jackfruit in other applications.
Read moreIf I could offer them one suggestion it would be to implement a keiki menu. It wouldn't require changing much, just smaller and more simplified/non-spicy versions of existing menu items and smaller drinks.

We ordered the Chili Dog and chicken Ceasar salad and wow was it good! This was the first time I had a vegan version of a Chicken Ceasar and a Chili Dog. They both were so delicious and you tasted all the flavors. They both tasted better than the real versions even!
Service****
Service with a smile and they bring the food out to you even though they consider themselves a fast food vegan spot. We were pleasantly surprised with how accommodating they were!
Atmosphere****
Cute outdoor space in a parking lot but none the less it’s nice and umbrellas for each table in case it rains.
Price$$
Very good and well worth it!
Pros: Tons of vegan options, Good portion sizes
Cons: More seating would be nice

Cool place, great nachos - Edit
We came for bfast/lunch on vacation. This is a food stand in a parking lot. The nachos were legit, great queso! My party also really liked the bfast burrito and burger. The no-tuna salad was not as flavorful as I’d hoped, but no big deal; it had delicious purple sweet potatoes though. Loved the vegan books on the tables. Super cute spot!

Went here 4 times in a week! - Edit
The all-vegan restaurant options are slim in Kailua Village, but Herbivore is doing the most to make up for that. A vegan drive through (what?!) with tables outside in the parking lot, it’s an interesting spot. Had a bowl, jackfruit bbq sandwich and a pizza and all were good. They even had some good vegan reading material at the tables for adults and kids. Definitely recommend!

Great vegan - breakfast and lunch - Edit
We had excellent breakfast burritos here, and then a great lunch of jackfruit nachos and veggie burgers. We were told the avocado was fresh and asked if we wanted it, so we got it on both. Great call, superb avocado. Only complaint is: I got an iced coffee. It didn’t taste right, like hazelnut. I asked the waitress, and she’s something like “oh sorry, I forgot to tell you it was a Carmel flavored coffee.” That’s a pretty big forget! I mean, I like coffee flavor. And that was it. I was stuck with it, even though she forgot. Still great food. Hopefully, they will start letting people bring in coffee b/c that was bad. But I still highly recommend it and I’m sure the coffee coffee is solid.

I got the Poke Bowl and the Pokahu Bowl (Rice and Bean mexican style dish). The poke bowl had too much seaweed and the hot temp of the rice combined with was was supposed to have been cold tofu poke mixed together, but the pokahu bowl was delicious.

Great menu, mediocre food and service - Edit
We ate at Herbivores twice during our visit to Kona. Their menu is excellent for vegans who are also gluten free, with many options to choose from. Our first visit, we tried the nachos with vegan chicken, taro burger, tofu poke bowl and jackfruit sandwich. The taro burger was underwhelming at best. The poke was just ok. The nachos were ok, but the chicken was extremely bland. The jackfruit sandwich was the best item of the bunch. The side of purple potatoes was depressing (boiled, sliced potatoes with no seasoning). The next visit, we ordered breakfast food which was better (although easier to make a decent bagel with vegan cream cheese and tomatoes!) - and three cheers for gluten free bagels! However, we ordered and waited right by the window for over 30 minutes and the food never came out! We peered inside and tried to figure out what was going on. Finally we went back to the counter to find out where our food was, and they told us it was just sitting there, but no one bothered to tell us the food was ready. Im glad Herbivores exists, but wish they would up their game on flavors and service.

We went for lunch and it was so good. It’s a cute little shack with outdoor seating but it IS literally in a parking lot so not really scenic. We got the chili dog and the bbq jackfruit and dragon fruit smoothies. Everything was incredibly delicious and the portions were good sizes. We will certainly be back!

Been here twice - Edit
Came twice for lunch and had the jackfruit nachos both times because they are that good (and I really love nachos). The Poke Bowl is simple and healthy, The Chili Dog is heavy and decadent, Taro Burger has a soft and comforting texture, and the Walnut Tacos were downright delicious but extremely messy to eat as "tacos."
