Great concept and delicious food - Edit
I love the premise of this restaurant! It's a nonprofit and you pay what you want for the food. After making your order you are shown the breakeven cost to produce your food and then on a tablet screen you can tap to add or subtract from that figure to pay what you want. It's heartening to see that a business like this is able to sustain a gifting business model and to be so successful that they have not one but two branches! And on top of this they do it paying the staff above the living wage, using eco-friendly electricity, sending zero waste to landfill and donating meals and planting trees! I think what this business is doing is amazing and inspiring!
Read moreThe food is also amazing! They have a great selection of sushi burritos and bowls, as well as sides and desserts. We went for the Fully Loaded and Caulipop sushi burritos, with a side of Loaded Satay Pockets. Both burritos were excellent – they were stuffed with tasty, fresh ingredients and were both so good! I particularly enjoyed the Crispy Chickn and Tempura Cauliflower fillings, they were both delicious! The rice was slightly warmed and the fillings were a mixture of hot and cold, which I enjoyed. The Loaded Satay Pockets were also very tasty.
Pros: Nonprofit running on a gifting business model, Delicious food, Friendly staff

So delicious! - Edit
There is so many different types of sushi to choose from, I love that it’s in a wrap so is a lot easier to eat and the flavour combinations are amazing!

After eating my body weight of Happy Maki's sushi rolls at Glastonbury and other festivals over the past few years, a passing visit saw me in the UK's vegan capital, Brighton, so I had to try the real thing. It was as lovely as I thought it was going to be. Made a welcome change eating at a table rather than sitting in a field. Come to Brighton, and come here.

Excellent - Edit
I will definitely return and recommend this place, beautiful health based tasty vegan scran and it is a good value meal. I had the wrap, it is sushi in a big wrap format and tasty as hell too. I dunno how they do it. Partner had the bowl and it too was grand. So a win win for everyone concerned.

Filling, unique business philosophy - Edit
Happy Maki is a takeaway and sit down restaurant on the second story of a building near the train station. When you climb the stairs, you enter a big dining room with bench tables (family style dining) and an ordering counter. The kitchen is fully visible behind the counter.
Read moreI got a rainbow sushi burrito and cauliflower wings. Both were good and filing, but I was a bit disappointed given how wonderful all the reviews of the restaurant are. The rice in the burrito seemed a bit undercook (or maybe just not fresh), and there wasn’t much other than rice in the burrito so it wasn’t very flavourful. The cauliflower wings were tasty and fresh out of the fryer, but they weren’t very crispy. Overall the food was ok, but nothing spectacular. Maybe my experience was impacted by coming to the restaurant in the last hour before closing, when ingredients weren’t at their freshest. I paid around £12, which was close to the recommended price.
Happy Maki is a non-profit restaurant that allows you to pay what you want. The menu lists how much it costs the restaurant to prepare your food (without adding any profit margin), and then let’s you decided whether to adjust that amount up or down in 5% increments. Any increase is apparently donated to one of two charities. I’m not sure where the money comes from if you adjust down, but that’s an option if e.g. you can’t pay the listed price.

Always visit when in Brighton - Edit
We always pay Happy Maki a visit when we’re in Brighton, also if they’re ever catering at festivals too! The sushi wraps are delicious as is the cauliflower side. Looking forward to visiting again soon.
