Changed name, still excellent for vegans

Being in Wigtown just after lockdown eased, we weren't sure what we'd find for vegans. We heard people talking of the Shoots and Leaves café, but couldn't find it. Eventually we went in one apparently in the right place, which had a vegan menu - the Glaisnock Café and Guest House.

Although serving meat, there is an excellent vegan and vegetarian menu, comprising various types of plant-based burger. There are also vegan soups. The staff were excellent, and the chef came out to see us - apparently this did used to be the Shoots and Leaves café but with changes in personnel connected with the guest house they had to start serving meat. However the chef is still vegan, and he'd really like to get it back to fully vegetarian someday. In the meantime, this is still a superb place for vegans to eat - the soup of the day was delicious and the onion bhaji burger I had was a real treat. For pudding, we couldn't resist the vegan lemon cheesecake.

The staff were really excellent, with the chef giving us recommendations for other local places that were go for vegans, and everyone was very friendly. The café was excellent value, too. We felt really lucky to find somewhere so good for us on our first lunch out after lockdown. Definitely recommended.

Pros: Excellent vegan food, Very friendly staff, Good value

Cons: Not fully vegetarian... for now

Cosy and a lot of choice

We came to the Shoot and Leaves cafe recently and we sat in the "cosy room", which is a back room with a lot of books and couches - indeed very cosy and much better than hard chairs! The burgers sounded very tempting, but it was too late for lunch and too early for dinner, so we had just chips (they also do chips with vegan cheese on top) and vegan cake, which was yummy. The service was good and we overall liked this cafe a lot.
We would go back if we are in the area.
Very relaxed atmosphere and a lot of choice for food.

Pros: The Cosy room in the back, A lot of choice for vegans

Vegetarian & vegan cafe

Shoots and Leaves is a fully vegetarian adn vegan cafe with a comfy back room, outdoor seating and two sections in the main cafe. Ate here with family and we all enjoyed different burgers. The vegan menu doesn't have the same things, so be sure to check you're reading the right one.
There are also some things to buy as gifts etc.

Pros: Fully vegetarian & vegan, A few gifts to buy

Great cafe with books

This is a lovely cafe. It is friendly with great vegan options on the menu. It also has a mini secondhand bookshop where paperbacks are 50p and hardbacks £1. We had toasties, cheesecake and a scone. Great portions sizes and reasonably priced. For people with young children there is a great kids menu with a free book of your choice! We will definitely go back.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Great kids menu, Reasonably priced

Cons: None

Highly recommend

Really nice staff, plenty of things to choose from. I had the vegan haggis and cheese panini and it was so delicious. The side salad was another level

Tasty and good value

We visited today and both had toastier with sides of chips. The toasties came with huge salads with things like olives, dates, couscous and courgette. Really delicious. We had oat milk hot chocolates and are both doubtful that it was oat milk as it didn’t taste oaty at all, but they were okay. We also found a hair, I think possibly a pet hair, on my toastie. We got scones to take home. Really lovely cozy place. For two toasties, two portions of chips, two hot chocolates and four scones we paid £20.

Pros: Tons of vegan options - a separate menu available, Huge portions , Really reasonably priced

Cons: Service a little off at times but nothing major, Unsure what kind of milk we were given, Hair on toastie

Vegan Food & Books

A must visit when in Wigtown. You will be delighted to find this vegan and veggie café that doubles as a bookshop. The food is delicious and the atmosphere relaxed, the service friendly and efficient.
Serves breakfast, lunch and snacks. We sat indoors in the back room, but there's also an outdoor garden area and cosy tables at the front of the café. A must for any Vegan or vegetarian, there are hundreds of book to browse being in Scotlands Book Town.

Amazing vegan food and a book haven

We visited Wigtown accidentally on our way home from holiday and were delighted to find this vegan and veggie café that doubles as a bookshop. The food was delicious, the atmosphere relaxed, the service friendly and efficient. We had a substantial lunch and browsed the bookshelves at our leisure. We sat indoors in the back room, but there's also an outdoor area and cosy tables at the front of the café. We'll be going back next time we're in Scotland!

Pros: Good vegan options, Lots of secondhand books, Lovely staff
