Great food and reasonably priced - Edit
A really nice vegan place with great food, healthy portions and fair prices.
Read moreI stopped here on a trip to Manhattan, as it was close to my hotel. Everyone on staff was super friendly, I really liked the vibe.
My favorites were the general tso’s chicken and bean curd skins. Soup came with the meal and I added on some steam buns that were delicious too. I felt like I got a lot of food for my money, especially considering this is NYC.
I only have positive things to say about Ginger Root. I’ll definitely come back the next time I’m on the East Side
Pros: Great food, many options, healthy portions

Very disappointed - Edit
I have been going here for years. It is under new management. The recipes have changed and the food is no longer good. Please bring back the old recipes.

High protein deliciousness - Edit
Had the vegan General Tso’s Chicken, vegan Pepper Steak, and vegan Char Siu Buns. Everything was delicious. Meat is a thick, textured seitan that is sooooo satisfying. Portions are well sauced, and I can wait to order from here again!

A little gem - Edit
Tons of choices, big portions for excellent prices! It’s a small place without much atmosphere, but the service was friendly and the food was simply delicious! We went twice during our stay.

Super delicious casual dinner - Edit
The hot and sour wonton soup was really great. We also ordered the general tso with white rice which was good, but we wished the “chicken” pieces were a bit smaller. Wonderful service and friendly atmosphere. I’ll definitely bring the kids again!

It is good to have an asian vegan place on the upper east side - Edit
I had read good things about the restaurant, so I went to check it out. There aren't many vegan restaurants on the upper east side. I thought that it was cool that they offer dim sum that was gluten-free. The staff was very friendly. We got takeout. My husband had the Yakisoba, and I had the Jap Chae. The Jap Chae wasn't bad, but a little oily. The Yakisoba was very greasy, and my husband didn't like it .
Read morePros: offers gluten free, offers dim sum, good option for vegan asian food on the upper east
Cons: oily, a bit on the pricier side

The best vegan Asian food ever! - Edit
I really enjoyed eating here. I have no idea how I hadn’t discovered this place before! The food was delicious. I often have a problem at restaurants that the food is overly salty and overly oily, however this was not the case here. I had the baked eggplant appetizer and the sweet and sour soy protein. So good! I also received a complimentary miso soup which was the best miso soup I’ve ever had tbh. I got to chat with the owner who has been vegan for 32 years! I highly recommend this place to everyone. I’ll be back for sure.

Good Eats on the Upper East Side - Edit
My boyfriend and I went to Ginger Root before a spa appointment nearby. Otherwise, it's not a place I would have gone, as it's sort of off the beaten path, far away from any tourist attractions. There was a bit of confusion as to the opening time, as some signs say 11:00, while others say 11:30, but we did get in shortly after 11:00. We both ended up getting lunch specials, which come with a decent miso soup, a nice spring roll, brown rice, and a slice of pumpkin. I got a soy protein dish that came with pea pods, while my boyfriend got a seitan dish with kale. They were both pretty good. And the price was also really good.
Read moreI wouldn't travel to the Upper East Side just to go to the restaurant, but if you're in the area, it's a good place to get an inexpensive meal.
Pros: Good food, especially if you get the lunch special, Good service
Cons: Off the beaten path, Conflict in opening time
