Insulting name for veggie burger, will not patronize

We stopped by Fergburger out of curiosity during our visit to Queenstown as there was always a line out the door. We took a look at their menu to see if there was a vegan option, and lo and behold there was one, but the name was so insulting that we left in disgust. Yes, we refused to order a burger called "Holier Than Thou" . We have a decent sense of humor, but didn't feel like feeding into the tired "judgy vegan" trope. Do yourself a favor and go to Bespoke for a lovely menu with non-insulting, clearly labeled vegan options.

Cons: Insulting name of veg burger

Was ok. Not really worth the wait in line.

Tried to call ahead as reviews suggested but line was engaged or off the hook. Ordered the holier than thou burger and the waitress took off two of the sauces to make it vegan, not realising another ingredient was not vegan. I felt sick not long after eating the burger and was unwell for at least 2 hours afterwards. The burger itself tasted ok but they offered bbq sauce as the only vegan option so it was fried tofu in bbq sauce on bread with some salad.

Cons: No vegan option, Inconsistent knowledge from staff

DELICIOUS burger

Fergburger is a must when in Queenstown and the Tempura Tofu burger was really good, minus sauces and it’s vegan! Staff know what is vegan and what isn’t. Wait is long 1hr ! Glad they at least provide for vego/vegan, good initiative

Ok but lord of the fries is better and nearby

The burger was ok. I’d probably rate it higher if it wasn’t competing with Lord of the Fries. Huge line and they’re both takeaway. I had meat eater friends who wanted Ferg but by the time we lined up I would have been better off walking up the street to Lord of the Fries.

Good options, avoid the line!

They have two burgers that can be vegan and a vegan chipotle sauce which you can have with them. Call and order via the phone so you don’t need to stand in the line. It’s good but not quite good enough to justify hanging out for an hour waiting!

Pros: Vegan options , Queenstown institution

Cons: Line can be horrendous

Good burgers

The food was good, especially the freshly baked buns, but I had better burgers in NZ. I think fergburger is a little overrated. We were lucky that the queue was so short, I wouldn’t have waited for an hour.

Less than average

We had high expectations as so many people had told us how this place made the best burgers.. Well they probably know well how to cook corpses but the vegan burger we had (or should I say veganized vegetarian burger) was one of the worst I ever had! The bread was dry and crumbly, the patty had very little taste, the slices of tomato were hard and green, a big leaf of lettuce and maybe some raw onion.. and that was it! Felt like idiots for having waited for so long and paid that much for a burger we couldn't even finish and threw away. This company definitely has great marketing.

Pros: Good marketing

Cons: Expensive. No vegan option on menu., Long wait outside, Dry, flavorless and boring burger

Overrated.

It may be down to the fact that my partner and I had very high expectations for Fergburger, because of the recommendations and the huuuge queue to get in, but we thought it was totally overrated.
We waited around 15minutes in the line and then had to wait another 15minutes for our food. They had two veggie burgers that could be made vegan by taking away the sauces. I had the 'Holier than thou' burger and my partner, a non vegan, had the 'Ferg Deluxe'. We thought that both burgers were pretty average. Good - but not worth all the hype and the wait. Plenty of other good burger places that are just as good, if not better, around with less waiting times!
Glad we visited but probably won't go again.

Top Tip

If you call up and order on the phone you don’t have to wait in line, you just arrive 10 minutes later and walk straight past the queue and grab your burger. Trust me

Pros: Tufo one is delicious

Get in line!

Oh the dilemma when you too wanna line up for what is supposed to be New Zealand’s best burgers, but you’re vegan...

Fear not; get in that line and simply veganise one of the veggie options! Since neither of the sauces on the Holier Than Thou Tofu-burger are SFV I asked whether I could have some avocado on there — which I could, free of charge! (The easiest way to my heart!)

I think if you prepare yourself for the wait (built up an appetite eh!) it really is not that bad. Prices are very reasonable for NZ too.

Pros: Good taste, Decent prices

Cons: No vegan sauces

Not worth the wait

I think my expectations were too high based on the reviews and long line. The food was descent, but I wish I had spent the hour I waited doing something fun or seeing the beautiful Queenstown scenery.

Pros: Staff was friendly even though they were very busy, Staff knowledgeable about what was vegan

Cons: Waited too long, Fee options

Would come back anytime!

Yes, it's really busy but waiting in line is part of the fun and worth it in my opinion!
I've had the “Holier than thou“ and asked them to put on BBC-sauce and avocado (+ $1) since none of the original sauces are vegan. But, seriously with BBC and avo, it is just perfect! One of the best burgers ever!

Pros: good size, yummy!, staff friendly and know what vegan is

Cons: waiting in line (less than in restaurants though!)

Amazing vegan tofu burger!

The Holier than Thou tempura fried tofu burger is amazing! The tofu is just perfect and the burger is very crisp and tasty! Always a long queue, but worth the wait!

Best. Burgers. Ever.

Don't let the huge line sway you - the Holier Than Thou tofu burger is almost definitely the best vegan burger I've had. Despite how crowded it is, you don't have to wait more than 20 minutes and both times I went there the food was truly excellent.

Pros: Tasty, fresh, wonderful food, Very reasonable prices, Great location

Cons: Only one vegan option

Yummieee Falafel-Burger

Very busy but it's worth to wait! They have 2 vegeterian burger options. I had the one with falafel patties which was very delicious but I didn't like the chili sauce on it, it tasted like BBQ-Sauce what taste for me like meat... You can ask for gluten free bread too. We took also the french fries with aioli - it was a dream!!!

Good cost benefit

No vegan options on the menu, but the staff is able to say how both of the vegetarian options (Bun Laden and Holier than thou) can be veganized. For something about 12 dollars you get a huge and tasty burger. But the best part is two houses away from the burger house: the ice cream parlor with many vegan and delicious options of sorbet.

Pros: Price

Cons: No vegan options, Always crowded

Not the best.

I enjoyed my tofu burger but it wasn't as good as I was hoping. I've had much better veggie burgers in my life. I suppose since this place is famous (the lines to get a burger is always out the door) it's kind of a must try, especially if you're traveling with carnivores.

Good burgers, good service

Only a few veggie options but can be made vegan on request. Often the non vegan options are the sauces, so the burgers can be dry but still yum. Worth the long wait but for the experience I would recommend. Tofu burger is the best and the Chips are very good

Pros: good cost , filling

Cons: long wait , sauces in burger aren't vegan so can be dry

Average only, Burgerfuel's tofu burger is better!

Decent pricing for NZ standards, but the satay sauce in the 'Holier than thou' burger is not vegan (contains milk), it's the sauces that make up a burger, and no thanks, I dont want to wait in such a long line for an ordinary burger with ketchup, or chilli sauce, or chipotle.

The only good part was the tofu sticks which were cooked well in a tasty batter.

My husband had a non-veg burger and said that his burger was good but nothing special.

I agree, this restaurant is surely overhyped- much better options out there like Habebes and Rehab which are just a few min walk from this place!

Pros: Price is decent, Tasty tofu batter

Cons: Average, not vegan friendly

Very unimpressed

It was definitely not worth waiting such a long time for what was an average burger.
No vegan burgers, only two vegetarian ones that could be made vegan. Be careful with the "Holier than thou", the coconut-satay sauce that sounds so promising is actually not vegan. They offered to replace it with a chipotle-sauce though, which tasted alright, but was clearly not meant for that burger. The burger is huge and the tempura battered tofu patty is quite good. The fries are quite disappointing.

Church of meat - vegan options lacking

This place is not reccomended for vegans - infact I think the restararaunt actively discourages people who don't eat meat. For example, their tofu burger (which was quite nice infact, patty was tempura battered) is called "Holier Than Thou" - I don't want to support a place that makes fun of me and my ethics just because they have a lot of hype and two average vegan burgers. A burger with venison is called "Little Lamby" etc - the menu is disgusting.
They do have two vego burgers which can be made vegan, they are happy to let you customise your burgers, tell you what is and isn't vegan. The 'Holier Than Thou' burger was good, the tempura batter on the tofu patty is similar to that of a deep fried piece of fish. The burger was good... not impressive and not by any means did it live up to the wait times and hype, but it was enjoyable and for (I think) around $13 it is a nice cheap meal. Not worth the wait though, and not worth supporting this vegan-shunning church of meat in my opinion.

Pros: Two Vego Burgers, Customisable toppings for veganising, Tasty tofu patty

Cons: Obsessive meat culture: disgusting, Ridiculous waiting time, Too loud in the restaraunt and too crowded

Choice of two

Perfect quick fuel up. Choice of two burgers that can be veganized. I had the "Holier Than Thou" and my husband had the "Bun Laden". I asked about the buns and they are all good. Sauces had to be changed.

Great Big Burgers.....

There's an element of hype around this place with a 10 to 15 minute wait queue not uncommon but if you're a burger fan then you owe it to yourself to visit Fergburger!

I managed to try both vege burgers here and the staff will happily modify them slightly to create them as vegan which is great (No aioli or yoghurt).

The tofu strips with spicy sauce based burger ('Holier than thou') was my favorite but the falafel based 'Bun Laden' was also a great, tasty burger. $12 - $14 for a burger here but they're big and tasty & a decent size meal on their own. Try one .......(or both - but not at the same time!).

Pros: Big and tasty, Vegan friendly, Plenty of fresh ingredients

Cons: Almost always a queue to order

Pros: vegan friendly

Cons: long lines unless ordered ahead of time for take a

Busy place with serious burgers

There seems to be a constant waiting line (reaching well out into the street!) of at least 20 minutes, even longer around lunchtime. Their tofu burger (holier than thou) is vegan if you ask them to skip the aioli. Very tasty!

Pros: Big burgers, Interesting veg options, Reasonable prices

Cons: Popular = long waiting time, Very noisy
