Healthy eating - Edit
I've been twice to Etnofood and really liked the menu, which offers various veggie dishes, that are prepared deliciously, without being heavy on carbs, as most venues I’ve come across since travelling through Mexico. The downside was that both times a lot of dishes or ingredients were missing, and I didn’t even arrive last minute. The staff also didn’t communicate it beforehand, but only when ordering. The first time out of 6 mains only two were available, and both times they only had one dessert out of 5. It’s a shame, because the food I had was super tasty. I also loved their homemade oil to add some extra seasoning to your liking. My least favourite things were the chocolate rice pudding, which was too sugary for me and the horchata, which I found too bitter - but those are personal preferences of mine.

Just okay - Edit
Compared to other vegan places it was a rather average experience. The food was just okay, the staff friendly but a bit chaotic. We waited long for our order.

Good food and amazing cooking class. - Edit
We came here for dinner late after we arrived in Oaxaca, we both got the sweet potato sandwich and really enjoyed it. The bread was a nice crusty sourdough and the sandwich was packed with ingredients. The chilli oil they provided was so good.
Read moreWe also did the vegetarian cooking class and it was our favourite thing we have done on our travels so far. Victor was amazing, we toured a local market to buy fresh produce, made a few different dishes, our own tortillas and quesadillas, salsas and mole. The whole experience was well worth the money and I would highly recommend anyone in Oaxaca does this class, or one of the other classes Etnofood offer.
I personally don't eat cheese but the class also involved a cheese tasting at the market. The food we made was all vegan apart from the quesadillas.
Pros: Chef Victor is fantastic , Great experience

Delicious slow food experience - fully vegan - Edit
This place is 100% vegan! I just asked the chef. And it is excellent. We had the hot salad, chili potatoes, mole, guacamole, chocolate bonbons and a black latte cocktail. Loved it all! #Veganuary

Food tastes very weird almost non-eatable - Edit
We order the mole negro, a choriqueso sandwich, a salad and some potatoes. The only thing that was fine was the salad. The mole negro was super spicy(even for me as a Mexican) and did not taste well. The sandwich was very weird with some sour citrus taste that taste almost as the mushrooms were spoiled, then we ordered the potatoes which again came with this weird sour citrus weird spoiled taste. The only thing that was very good was the guayaba water of the day.

Cons: Weird flavors weird combinations , Tastes as almost is spoiled , Very expensive for what you get

I wanted to love this place! - Edit
I was really excited to try this restaurant, but left feeling disappointed. I even cancelled my cooking class I had booked here due to how underwhelming the food and drinks were. I will admit I only ordered a salad, but it wasn’t great! The potatoes and guac my son ordered weren’t great either. Everything needed more seasoning or salt or something! Even the drinks were under flavored. It was just ok. Loved the service, loved the ambiance, loved the menu, loved the concept, didn’t love what I ordered.

Good Oaxacan vegan food - Edit
I'm a chocolate lover so Mole is one of my favorites Mexican food so I had to try the traditional Mole de Fandango para Bodas! Wich is a very simple dish to give the importance to the mole sauce, this was pretty flavorful the perfect sweet and spicy combo, the oyster mushrooms were right on point and the rice was ok. I will visit again.

Good food, but not 100% vegan restaurant as it claims - Edit
I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere (beautiful little courtyard in the back of the restaurant). The staff was VERY friendly, but I ordered the Symphony of Cacao only to learn that it has milk powder in it. The waiter explained that they have a sister restaurant that is vegetarian and those chocolates came from them. Our waiter was very nice, but was super absent-minded. We needed to reorder things several times.
Read moreI also signed up for the mole cooking class (as opposed to the vegetarian cooking class and when I paid several days in advance, I asked several times to make sure that the mole class was indeed vegan and not vegetarian and I was assured that it was) only to discover that this was not a vegan cooking class. I had purchased this cooking class as a birthday gift to my best friend and it seems we were just lumped in with the vegetarian cooking class. We were instructed by Juan, the director, who was very friendly and had a great personality. Although we did make a mole (mole amarillo), it wasn't the main focus of the class. He didn't use different pans/utensils/cutting boards for the dishes with cheese and the dishes without. For example, they made quesadillas and then, with cheese still on the pan that had oozed out, began to cook something else that was intended for me.
The food was very tasty and it was nice to sit with the class after our hard work.

Thank you very much for your comment. As we know how important social networks are, we will make some appreciations and clarify some doubts that may arise from here.
Read moreWe have a line of vegan chocolate bars and other alternatives. The filled chocolates are vegetarian and it was explained to avoid confusion. As we know how important vegan cuisine is, we use nothing of animal origin in our restaurant because of its importance within our philosophy.
Within the cooking class we would like to inform and what we offer is a vegetarian cooking class, as can be read in all the descriptions, taking into account that it is a transitional class to teach more people another way of eating. I would like to share that this cooking class in particular was reserved by omnivores and the only vegan was Mrs. Smith, a beautiful old lady who was very picky unlike her friend, a very energetic and forceful educated woman, who on many occasions confronted her about her little open and collaborative attitude, the other attendees included something called Quesillo, a traditional cheese in Oaxaca, and here it was an agreement by all, to include it, but I also have to say it was never included in any main dish, except as a complement. It is important to clarify that we seek to be inclusive, respectful and very open, for this reason we give everyone a voice, we do not lie in our class when we say that it is vegetarian and we are always open to developing it in a vegan way with research towards a plant-based diet. Something worth rescuing is that everyone was very understandable, assisted her and put up with her treatment, but it is important to say that we as a service will always be open to improving and we will build a better relationship with all our friends who visit us, we have been doing this for more than five years that is why the replica is important.
We will always be attentive to our clients and comments, we are very careful with all our guests and we will always tell the truth from the beginning of veganism as a philosophy of life and respect between us.

I booked a vegetarian cooking class and didn’t regret it. I really feel like we cooked in the traditional way and discovered new local flavors. Kinda expensive, but totally worth it.

Disappointing - Edit
We really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it just lacked flavour and originality. We had the fine herbs potatoes and the al pastor sandwich. The potatoes were fine, a little bit undercooked and dry. The sandwich was ok but nothing to write home about. It’s a bit more expensive than elsewhere but I don’t see the point in paying more.
Read moreAfter doing the cooking class with them, I would expect a better menu. The class was so much fun and the food was SO delicious that I had high hopes for the restaurant.
So my advice, skip the restaurant and do the cooking class.

Cooking class in which the students actually cook! - Edit
Some “cooking classes” are more of cooking demos, and the students mostly watch. Not here! The vegetarian Oaxacan cooking class makes full use of every student’s hands. I was very lucky that though I had trouble registering online, I showed up to Etnofood 45 minutes before the class started and asked if they had space for one more. They did, and I’m so glad!
Read moreOur teacher Martín started by asking about our food allergies and other restrictions. We had a nut allergy, a lactose intolerant person, and me, a vegan. Martín carefully modified the menu to make sure we were all accommodated, and he did it with the most “this is normal not annoying” vibe.
We walked to Mercado de la Merced and several street vendors to buy ingredients. Watch that you pay attention when Martín starts moving because you might scramble to locate the group.
Then we went to what I presume is the food lab where we donned aprons and started cooking. Martín quickly set each person doing a thing, and came back just in time to turn off burners at the right moment. We made memelas with quesillo or a fava bean hummus. These memelas were full to overflowing with so many grilled veggies, moles. We made a warm broccolini and tomato salad. We made a guava and mint drink. We made a very spicy salsa and a tomato rice soup. We ground our own salt from large gravel size pieces. And we sampled some mezcal. What a phenomenal day!
The only caveat, which won’t matter for many people, is Martín made a few passing jokes about substance use. It was clear it was a joke, but in case that matters for recovery purposes.
Pros: Welcoming teacher , Dietary restrictions no big deal, Students actually cook
Cons: See note at end about joke content

Hm, expecting so much more … - Edit
Based on reviews we were really looking forward to come here, but I have to admit that we were a bit disappointing. Maybe we just came to a wrong day (the truth is that we came half an hour before they close the restaurant) and we were just unlucky … but for us there is so so much better vegan food in Oaxaca.
