Take-out
Located in Cochin - a junction for a number of railway lines. As you walk into the train station and to the first platform, just walk left and you will see this large and very crowded vegetarian restaurant. You pay first, get a receipt, and sit at a table. Someone will take your receipt and you will get a tray with white rice, yogurt, dhal, and other Indian dishes. If you finish the dishes, they come around and give you more (except for the rice).

Cheap Clean Eats - Edit
I paid 35 Rupees (about fifty cents, US) for a huge portion of white rice and several typical Indian dishes in the other compartments of the tray. If you finish what's in a compartment, someone comes around and refills it. The place was packed. I'd say there was space for about eighty people. The food was good. Certainly not gourmet, but good. And given the price, I'd say it's a great value. If you're on a tight budget, this place is for you. I was the only person in the place not eating with his fingers. You have to ask for a spoon if you want one. There were signs on the wall describing all the steps taken by the restaurant to ensure cleanliness. They do a very high volume of business. So, if you're looking for a 'local' experience, in a clean environment, I recommend this. I think these inexpensive vegetarian restaurants in the train stations are common. I just ate at a similar cafeteria at the Varkala Station (not quite as good).
