Huonville's best spot for vegans

DS is a lovely cafe style place, friendly, a bit quirky with a great selection of food. It does truly embrace diversity, which means it has non-veg food, but also includes a good range of vegan food, scrambled tofu breakfast, at least one vegan veg dish which changes, two types of vegan burgers, one a spice hemp seed ball with vegan cheese, a vegan indonesian curry, vegan snacks a few yummy vegan deserts and various vegan snacks. All clearly marked and most also gluten free. And of course other meals that are vegetarian, not vegan, like quiche, etc.

This is pretty phenominal for a small rural cafe, and Dave and Steve aleays seem to add more. And it's all relatively inexpensive.

The embracing of diversity extends to clientel. DS is LGBTI friendly, aged friendly, and often hosts community events, meetings, etc. The staff are friendly, and it truly is a happy place.

Pros: A *lot* of vegan options! Great food! , Very friendly, relaxed, and welcoming, Inexpensive. Great coffee

Cons: Closes around 4pm

Quirky and fun

I was so happy to get crinkle cut chips, one of my favourite comfort foods. Some might think a bit basic but they were cooked to perfection. The vegan "nuggets" were more like veggie balls, not what I expected but better and delicious. A nice surprise! I got a vegan chocolate wagon wheel brookie to go which was sickly sweet, so my advice is stick to the savoury options unless you love mouthfuls of sugar.

Pros: Delicious comfort food , Quirky and comfortable atmosphere, Lovely people

Cons: Sickly sweet dessert, Unhealthy

The smoothies could be improved, the berry one was full of hard seed bits and tasted more like almond milk than berry.

Great vegan breakfast!

I ordered the vegan breakfast, it was amazing ! It had tofu scramble with a tomato relish mixed in, sautéed spinach and mushrooms on sourdough toast. Was very filling. My husband had a hemp seed Pattie. He said it was ok but a bit peppery. They also had a vegan curry pie, vegan nuggets, vegan burgers, and other options. Very clearly labelled😄

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Clearly labelled , Good size portions

Quirky little cafe with good food.

The menus been updated since the photos that have been posted, but is mostly the same (tofu scramble, burger, pita, black bean balls as well as some sides) and had a number of vegetarian options too. As of posting, the cafe is closing at 4 until about the end of December.

Pros: Quick service, Dietary requirements on menu

Funky friendly and always funny

Every time I go to DS I am greeted with smiles and friendly chatter - even when super busy. Love their vegan iced coffee - which won’t be found anywhere else in town, so a real treat - made with coconut condensed milk. Their scrambled tofu is the perfect Sunday morning breakfast!

Pros: Awesome vibes, Always has vegan options , It’s licensed😉

A great little place

Multiple vegan options, most of which are or can be made GF as well. Very responsive to suggestions for accommodating vegan patrons. Lots of seating options, including outside or the quieter back rooms: great for people with sensory overload issues.

Pros: Good range of options, very reasonable prices

A great find

Not many vegan friendly places in this part of the world so it was great to find this one. We tried a salad bowl, a curry and the next day a vegan pie. Very friendly and helpful staff who know exactly what a vegan wants. The food was generally excellent except for the really crap side salad that came with the pie. Wacky décor adds to the experience and you must try their homemade version of a Snickers/Mars bar - I would have had two more given the chance...

Pros: Good selection of vegan items on the menu, Vegan desserts too

Cons: The zucchini side sald - yuk

Diamond in the rough

Great little gem in the Huon Valley. Super queer friendly, a range of delicious cakes and meals. A couple of permanent vegan menu items and usually one or two rotating vegan specials .

Pros: Vegan friendly, friendly staff, quaint

Cons: Not entirely vegan, Ran out of some vegan items
