creative, ambitious vegan cooking - Edit
A bit hard to know how to review this place - on the one hand it's great that it's vegan, imaginative and ambitious, trying to do something personal and interesting. On the other hand, we felt that a lot of the plates didn't really work.
Read moreThe concept is a variety of sharing plates - we shared 6 plates between 3 on the advice of the waitress which was just right. Some of the elements were delicious - highlights were the antipasti (especially the pickled mushrooms) and the seitan was very good. On the other other hand some things were very odd or just unpleasant - some sauces that reminded us of babyfood, a dried out aubergine, a very strange mushy dumpling around the pea stuffing.
It was also ridiculously slow - there was only one other table occupied when we ordered but we still had to wait over an hour for our first plate of food (other than the antipasti). Surely with lots of sharing plates it would make more sense to stagger bringing things to each table? We didn't get fed until the other table had received their whole meal!
Very uninspired selection of wine and beer too
The people cooking seemed very young and enthusiastic and are clearly trying to do something special - we hope and also expect that it will improve. They've done a lovely job of making a light, airy space out of an old shipping container too. Not a cheap meal out but very reasonable for what it's aiming to be.
Pros: interesting, some excellent dishes, lovely location
Cons: very slow, inconsistent food, mediocre drinks selection

Elegant food - Edit
Absolutely loved our experience at Dr Legumes last night. We shared 4 plates between 2 of us. Each was beautifully presented and the food combinations were very well thought out and tasted delicious. Healthy fresh imaginative vegan food, followed by coffee and the best doughnut ever! Perfect.

Tasty, well presented, slow - Edit
We have dined twice at Dr Legumes, both times the adults in our party have very much enjoyed the food, when it eventually arrived. Luckily we were not in a rush on either occasion.
Read moreThey have done a nice job in converting the shipping container into a combined kitchen and stylish dining space.
There seemed to be a dearth of selections that would appeal to children, unfortunately.
The soft drinks that Dr Legumes make are very tasty, their Espresso coffee and their Green tea are great. Unfortunately my missis was not impressed with her cappuccino. It had an unusual, gritty consistency, we heard another customer commenting negatively on this during our first visit. Do hope that they can sort this out.
As others have noted, this is not a bargain basement diner, you will find your wallet lighter after ordering. That is acceptable when the food is of a good standard.

BEST VEGAN FOOD IN THE WORLD - Edit
I've eaten a couple of times now at @drlegumes in Folkestone harbour. By far the best food I've ever eaten in a restaurant anywhere in the world and I've eaten at many of the supposed best!!!!
Read moreAll the food is freshly prepared and all the ingredients are locally sourced. The menu is seasonal so you're eating as nature intended. The flavours, textures and presentation are truly world class.
The young chefs are amazing and will be superstars in the future. Of that i have no doubt. Also there's a really lovely view of the town, cliffs and the sea! Plus prices are very reasonable and service was impeccable , our waitress was so friendly and helpful!!!
Couldn't recommend a restaurant more highly. #perfection
Pros: Nothing but pros
