Tasty vegan food.

A large selection of vegan foods. Waitress kindly helped me make a decision, informing me that the empanadilla appetizer had been revamped and was different than the description on the menu and was small while the eggplant and tofu sandwich (other option) was very large, which it was! Sandwich was very tasty!

Pros: Great waitstaff, Vegan desserts!

Cons: A little pricey.

A Favorite in San Juan

Separate vegan menu with thoughtful options. They even veganized versions of classic PR dishes. Very nice staff is knowledgeable about vegan options. Patio seating is great if there's live music in Plaza Colón. Location is adjacent to Castillo de San Cristóbal in Old San Juan.

Pros: Great location in Old San Juan , Delicious food

Cons: Expensive

Expensive Vegan options

Went here for lunch today and was super excited to try some of the vegan options. To start we got the vegan empanadas. Although they were good the ones on the menu (curry vegan) weren’t the ones that came out. Nobody informed us that they had run out and that an entirely different kind of vegan empanada would come out. I probably wouldn’t have gotten them. I also thought that $10 was pretty expensive for what they were. For the main dish, I got the spicy vegan tacos without cilantro. The spicy mayo that was on top of the tacos was just okay, I wasn’t the biggest of fans of the meat that was inside the tacos. I also tried my friends vegan mofongo and wasn’t a fan of that either. Friendly staff, clean place but Probably wouldn’t come back.

Pros: Lots of vegan options

Cons: Expensive

Yummy empanadas

The empanadas were absolutely amazing. I tried to eat the burger also but didn’t not even make it a quarter through before stopping. It was lacking in texture so if fell apart as i raised it up. Tried to eat it with a fork but the taste was not appealing in enough. We didn’t stay long but my Hubby was very pleased with his non vegan French toast lol.

Awesome place

A charming place with lots of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free menu options to choose from. The service was good for a Sunday at 10am. The wait staff were friendly and very accommodating. The fruit salad with mint was amazing. The gluten free vegan pancakes were moist, delicious and very fulfilling. A most visit if you’re in Old San Juan and looking for a place to eat.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Accommodating staff

Amazing spot - good menu, good location, pricey but worth it

This is a great find in the old city. It is right at Plaza Colon, with a nice, mid-to-upscale atmosphere. A sizable vegan menu (labeled!), which includes an incredible vegan mofongo. It's a little pricey (the mofongo was ~$21) but it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely go back!

LOVE this place

The service is slow as ,molasses but friendly and accommodating - very kind servers and kitchen staff who are just so sweet. We went for lunch one day and had the empanadillas, a green salad (with a delicious mango vinaigrette!) and the vegan mofongo - wow, everything was amazing! Their lemonade and herbal infused non-alcoholic beverages were also fresh and wonderful, especially the ginger mint.

We also went for dinner one night and had the Guava loaf which was phenomenal! Got a green salad and a side of rice, beans and sweet plantains. I also had the sangria which was delicious but deadly😉very strong! I really wanted to try the vegan dessert but we were stuffed.

This place is pricey but totally worth the splurge.

Pros: Vegan menu, Delicious food, very friendly staff

Cons: slow service, pricey, Great location

There is an entire section of the menu marked vegan. A few vegan deserts as well but you'll have to ask. Only two GF/V options but I had both of them and they were delicious.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Clearly marked, Vegan and gluten free deserts

Cons: Expensive, Serves meat

Food is not good

The food is super super bland , the meatloaf is chopped up cold tofu with barbecue sauce poured over . The tofu scramble was just tofu cut up and warmed with turmeric powder . Stay away from these two dishes

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Expensive

Few, but Tasty

Update from April 2019: things have gone downhill since my last visit; menu still has vegan options, but they aren't as good. Veggie loaf is now just slices of tofu with bbq sauce for 20$ & salad was basically just iceberg lettuce. I hope this was just a bad night, so I'm leaving as 4 stars, but be warned. That said, PR is still not that vegan-friendly, so this is at least a place with multiple vegan options.

Former review from Sept. 2013:
There are a decent number of dishes (at least 6 entrees) in the Vegetarian section of the menu, but some elements may be non-vegan - you'll have to ask. Fortunately, my waiters on both visits were fluent in English and understood "vegan" so was able to identify these for me.

I enjoyed their dinner and lunch (once each) - would've eaten there more, but was staying out on a resort near Luquillo, a bit far from Old San Juan.

If you want to try vegan versions of traditional Puerto Rican foods (e.g., mofongo), this is the place for you. I had a Veggie Guava loaf and one of the tofu dishes (I forget which), which were both tasty, along with at least one substitute for non-vegan side. The atmosphere is nice, kinda artsy & relaxed, and it's near the center of town, including a square that features frequent performances.

FYI, if you're vegan and you want to eat out (especially if your Spanish is bad), this is a great option to have, as the island is not very vegan-friendly.

Note: this is from my visit in September, 2013 (getting to this review late).

Pros: atmosphere, nice, vegan-knowledgeable staff, tasty, traditional dishes

Cons: parking is tough (Old San Juan), pricey

Amazing Vegan Options

I just got vegan mofongo because it was our first day in PR and it was delish. The “meat” and sauce they serve it with is also very good and there were so many options I wanted to try them all!!

Pros: TONS of options , beautiful atmosphere , delicious food

Cons: pricey!, takes a while for food

Great vegan options in Old San Juan!

The restaurant may be a bit dated but it is friendly and vibrant and has a section on the menu clearly labeled vegan!! There are many options too. The tofu scramble I had was flavorful and delicious and appreciated the vegetables (unlike a lot of the other heavy vegan items I had in PR). Definitely recommend.

Delicious

The food and service was amazing. I loved that there were gluten-free and vegan options on the menu. The use of root vegetables in “mock” meat plates instead of soy products is genius. I will definitely be returning next time I’m in Old San Juan. I ate the vegan “bbq” loaf and it was delicious!

Pros: Gluten-free options, Vegan options, Beautiful location/atmosphere

Cons: Restaurant does serve animal products, $$$-but worth it

Delicious food!

We had lunch at the Cafe Berlin and it was gorgeous! The portion sizes are huge and the food just tasted so good. There are plenty of vegan options (about half of the menu is vegan!) and the food is a mix of typical Caribbean, Puerto Rican and international flavours. The service was also excellent and the frozen mango mojitos we had where refreshing and delicious. Unfortunately I got a kind of scratchy throat from the mashed malanga.
Even though it was rather expensive I definitely recommend going there ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cons: expensive

Authentic Food Veganized!

Sometimes, finding vegan food that is authentic to the place your visiting can be tough. Cafe Berlin hits the nail on the head! My husband and I split the Criollo Tofu and Veggie Guava Loaf and both were fantastic! The guava loaf was sweet balanced by the side of malanga. The Criollo Tofu had a slight kick with the yummiest plantains I’ve had in a while. Our fantastic server Steven said that they host brunch from 9-3 during the week. We’ll definitely be back.

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Friendly staff (Steven!!), Outdoor seating

Pretty good

Had a vegan section of the menu. Food was decent, but not great. We did try mofongo as a side for the first time which was pretty good but expensive ($7 for a side). They seemed to attract mostly cruise ship passengers. Our lunch bill was ~$65 for two sandwiches, a side of fries, a side of mofongo and two sparkling waters.

Pros: Whole section of menu was vegan

TONS of options, VERY expensive

An entire section of the menu was labeled as vegan! It was very upscale, but we are outside. When we went there was only one server so it took a VERY long time to get food, and the meals were quite expensive, usually upwards of 15 dollars, and my meal was 20. I do reccomend it though!

Pros: lots of vegan options

Cons: expensive
