Vegan mofongo - Edit
First time trying mofongo and it was delicious (and a huge portion). Not the cheapest place around but was great food and a lot of vegan options. Will have to go back.

Great place! - Edit
Cafe Berlin is a cute restaurant with a great location right in the heart of Old San Juan. They have a full vegan menu and the food is great! (We ordered several things off of the menu and the only thing that was just okay was the BBQ filets.) Our server was super fun and helpful. The reason I give it three stars and not four is because the prices are really high. Expect to pay between $25 and $34 per entree. Overall, I'm glad we went and would go back again!

We came here at the start of our trip and plan to return just for the vegan empanadas. Nice spot to grab a bite and fancy drink while exploring Old San Juan!

Average food at high prices - Edit
We came here for lunch and ordered an empanada, the mofongo, and the carrot cake. They were just alright. I'd say the empanada was the best out of the three but way overpriced at $15. The mofongo was absolutely enormous. It's a hearty dish to begin with and this one could easily be shared between 3-4 people. We managed to finish the whole thing and had to skip dinner because we still felt full. The first few bites were quite good but then it became increasingly heavy. The topping could've used a little more seasoning as well. My partner liked the carrot cake but I wasn't too impressed. It was a bit dry and gritty almost like a gluten-free cake.
Read moreThe location is convenient right by Plaza Colon and the decor is pretty upscale by local standards. The amount of vegan options are also a plus. All that said, it simply wasn't worth the price. Our meal set us back just over $70 including tips, which would've been even more if we'd taken the bottled waters given by our server. We asked to swap for tap and he was hesitant, saying it might give us stomach problems. We turned out fine.
Pros: location, vegan options
Cons: way overpriced

Went here for my birthday and it was okay. The food could have more flavor in it honestly but the atmosphere in Old San Juan is lovely. Drinks were the best thing haha!

Overpriced, flavorless vegan food - Edit
We were so excited to experience Cafe Berlin, we showed up three days in a row only to discover a “closed” sign on the door at each attempt. When they were finally open, we excitedly jumped on the opportunity to finally try out the various vegan options on the menu. But, when we saw the prices, we were really disappointed. We typically like to order 3-5 things from each restaurant so we can get a full experience before leaving a review, but we were limited to just two dishes at Cafe Berlin due to the steep prices. We ordered the Vegan & Gluten Free Breakfast Bowl ($24) and the Ropa Vieja Vegana ($32) for lunch. Sad to say, this place was not worth the wait. The tofu in the breakfast bowl tasted like paper, almost no flavor. And, the soy strips in the ropa vieja dish had a strange aftertaste with minimal flavor as well. Overall, very bland food and we felt it was way, way overpriced. We went to St Germain, another cafe just a few blocks away, and ordered twice as much food for less money. I don’t recommend Cafe Berlin, unless you like paying top dollar for flavorless food and small portions. The atmosphere is casual, with only 7 tables inside and an outdoor area with umbrellas over the tables. As charming as this place looks from the outside, we were really disappointed with the food and the cost to eat here.

More vegan options than expected - Edit
Being it was my first time in Puerto Rico, I was nervous about it lacking cool different vegan options that weren't just rice and beans and platano. This place had vegan mofongo that was to die for. They carry a vegan sandwich and tofu wrap as well. Food does take long, but I think people forget that good fresh food takes a minute to prepare. Highly recommend this place and the yucca mofongo!

Vegan mofongo for the win! - Edit
First time visiting PR, and after trying a nasty vegetable mofongo the night before at another restaurant, I’m so glad I didn’t give up on my quest to find a good plant based mofongo. I had no attention of ordering mofongo for breakfast/brunch but so glad I did. It was delicious! The homemade “sausage” like pieces on the top were surprisingly really good. The vegan empanadas were also delicious! Also I have the add this restaurants location is perfectly located in Old San Juan. You can grab a bite to eat and then walk outside and explore.

Good if you pick well! - Edit
I’ve been a few times now and gotten a couple different dishes from their vegan options (they have quite a few, including gluten free!)- the breakfast bowl I did not like, would not order again, I found it super bland. The pancakes were fine, just plain. Very basic. The taco platter was INSANE. So so good. Will be going back and getting that again, I’m craving it. The carrot cake is also delicious! Really moist and really good frosting, not too sweet.

It’s only right to try Mofongo in the place that originated it! Cafe Berlin is a little more expensive than most places but definitely worth it!

Cafe Berlin - Edit
Nice vegan mofongo but it wasn’t as good as another place I tried which was also drastically cheaper. If this is your only option while in SJ, then I’d recommend trying the mofongo here so you can have a taste of a local Puerto Rican dish.

Good food, out of many items - Edit
The food was great at Cafe Berlin, but pricey. They were out of many vegan options, perhaps due to the holiday weekend. The vegan mufongo was excellent, and could easily be shared between two people.

Overpriced but decent - Edit
We got a vegan mofungo, which was great, the downside is this place is priced for tourists and caters to them. If you happen to be in Old San Juan and need food this might be your only option unless you can flex some Spanish at other local spots. The food is good it’s just overpriced.

Ordered the Criollo Tofu. While it took a while for the food to come out it was worth the wait. The food was freshly made and delivered to the table hot and delicious. Served with yellow rice and pink beans and 3 tostones.

We got a delicious vegan burger and vegan mofongo. It has been the best vegan find since we got here. The prices are a bit high, but the atmosphere is chill and the music is enjoyable. I also had a blueberry vodka drink with fresh mint that was amazing!

I love the variety of options they have for Vegans! I got the Vegan Mofongo and man it did not disappoint ! So delicious and filling! The staff of the restaurant were really friendly as well! Only thing that was a bit bothersome were the amount of birds around which I know is Old San Juan in general and not fault of the restaurant. But if needed be you may want to eat inside if you don’t want to deal with the birds

Good but not a home run - Edit
Walked from ocean park to VSJ for cafe Berlin and it was good, but a little underwhelming. The service was exceptional and the drinks were v tasty. The food was pretty good - we tried the vegan burger and the tofu criolla. I thought the rice was the true star of the tofu dish; the tofu itself was too soft. Overpriced for what you get.

Had the empanada last vegano and they were delicious. Then had the Mexican vegan GF plate which was soy shaving that my husband couldn’t believe it wasn’t chicken. (It wasn’t) the sauces were great with both of them and the pesto fried rice was so flavorful.

Delicious vegan options - Edit
We had an excellent meal at Cafe Berlin!
Read moreFirst of all, there’s a number of vegan options including a dessert option, all clearly labeled, which I really appreciated. The entrees are on the pricier side, but portions are generous.
We ordered the passionfruit and guanabana fresh juices for drinks, and were not disappointed. My previous experience with the latter was one that was saccharine sweet, however, Cafe Berlin seems to be very conservative on the sugar in that regard, and the drink really let the flavors shine.
For food, we chose the criollo tofu and the spicy vegan tacos. The criollo tofu was good, the sauce was great, however, the rice and beans side that came with it was just fantastic (I’m still thinking about it two weeks after)! The spicy vegan tacos also came with a great spicy sauce and were overall pretty good.
Overall, I’d give this 5 stars just for the amazing drinks and the great rice/beans side that was just out of this world. Highly recommended for any veg*ns wandering around Old San Juan.
