Incredible vegan Sri Lankan food

I visited Amirthaa in 2017 and still dream of my meal. I ordered 3 dishes, each one better than the last, and took my dosa with me to the airport later that night to eat on the plane.

I’ve never sweated so much in my life as I have eating that meal, but the warm night breeze on my dripping neck turned to inbuilt air conditioning during the walk back to my hostel, and I finally understood firsthand why people in hot climates eat such hot food.

I hope to return!
Ask for no ghee.

Pros: Authentic South Indian/Sri Lankan food, Wide variety of vegan friendly dishes

Sri Lankan Tamil cuisine

One of my favourites of its kind in Colombo, much better than some that are more central. As usual in this cuisine, many dishes are naturally vegan.

Cheap and tasty!

Super cheap and tasty food, only locals, so expect the real deal with the food (not tourist spicy but real spicy) and to eat with your hands!

Pros: Tasty, Cheap

Good vegetarian food for really cheap

I had a lentils ball, mardaka (kind of bread), dhal, very good and lack tea. I recommend this place. Just 130rp.

Pros: All vegetarian, but most vegan, Good, Really cheap

Cons: Don't be afraid if they look at you weird 😂

Friendly service, good food and good prices

I went to two other vegetarian restaurants yesterday and experienced "New York style" customer service (meaning the attitude of the people who work there was bordering on rude). But what a great place I found today. I was looking at a wall mounted menu when an employee asked me if he can help me. I told him that I didn't really understand any of the food items and asked him if they could just make me a plate with rice and a few other items that are not spicy. He said yes and about 5 minutes later he brought me a plate with rice and three or four items. I don't know what the things were called but there was rice in the middle and a carrot Curry and a green vegetable, perhaps kale. There was another smaller tray with three bowls... One was buttermilk, one was a broth and the other was a sweet tapioca for dessert. I will post photos. Having read a previous review, I knew to bring my own plastic fork so I wouldn't have to eat with my bare hands. The total was 180 rupees. I definitely recommend this restaurant to others and I hope to return soon!

Pros: Such friendly helpful service, Good food, not spicy

Cons: Not a lot of protein on the plate

Good simple food

This eatery serves up simple and tasty food dishes. I had a big and yummy masala dosai for 190 rupees. The surroundings are very basic, and the atmosphere is far from tranquil. Be prepared to eat the traditional way using your right hand, facilities are available to wash your hands before and after your meal.
It would be fully vegan if it weren't for the ghee.
I came across two other veggie eateries within a few hundred metres of each other down this street, so there are plenty of options for vegetarians in this area.

Pros: yummy food, good price, near other veggie eateries

Cons: Uses ghee, basic surroundings, noisy and busy

No fuss, tasty Indian food. recommended!

We went three times during our two days in Colombo. Tried the masala Dosai with delicious sambal and different chutneys plus a variety of short eats and Poori with potato. Staff was very helpful when we told them we were vegan and if they could make the dishes without ghee. You eat as the locals - with your right hand.

Pros: good vegan selection, staff helpful and friendly, cheap + fast service
