Oat-ly vegan yogurt and vegan sorbet, self serve

This is a self-serve yogurt place: you grab a paper cup from the counter, go to one of the various yogurt machines, pump yourself some yogurt (mixing and matching to your heart's content), and then pay by the weight. You can also buy various toppings (including some clearly marked vegan toppings) separately. There are no tables, but they do have seating and counters.

When I first visited here, I was disappointed that the only vegan items that had were sorbet, so I initially gave them only 2 stars. They recently added Oat-ly vegan yogurt, so I bumped up their rating. When I visited this time, they had 4 vegan flavors--which, again, you can mix and match. The price is not bad, providing you don't get carried away and pump yourself too much. Oat-ly yogurt is pretty good (I had the Chai tea and chocolate), though a frankly sweeter than I prefer. Anita Gelato a couple of doors down is a more elegant setting, and Anita Gelato's artisinal vegan yogurt is better as well (and they also have acai bowls)--though Anita's is admittedly much more expensive than 16 Handles. (There is also an Emil and Bolio's a block away on 1st Avenue, which usually has 1 vegan flavor.)

This venue is located on a stretch of 2nd Avenue (from 72nd to 86th Street) that is densely populated with bars, restaurants, takeout places, and other eating/drinking venues of all sorts (on this block alone--2nd Ave. between 81 and 82nd Streets-- I counted 15 different eating/drinking venues). If you are in this area and seek a a vegan dessert that is not too expensive, 16 Handles is a place you might consider.

Delightful sorbet

Have only had their vegan options, which are exceptionally refreshing on a hot NYC summer day. Really fresh and in a fun atmosphere.

Pros: Refreshing

Vegan soft-serve

The vegan flavors are sorbets, not really ice cream, but it's good. There's a buffet of toppings that you can add, and they're all labeled for what's vegan, gluten-free, etc. The vegan flavors are clearly labeled, also.

Everything is self-serve and paid by weight.

Pros: Vegan soft-serve
