the biggest vegetarian/vegan buffet I know - Edit
This is opposite the Jin An temple in Shanghai. There are four vegetarian restaurants in the building-this restaurant is on the 4th floor-it is a bit pricey (set price) but has the most incredible range of food-buffet style. Soups, teas, starters, main course and desserts-a huge range. The first time we went we were a bit concerned because some of the names (everything has English labels) were like pork chops and spare ribs-but don't worry its all veg. Dishes that are vegetarian rather than vegan are labelled as such.
Read moreThis time we went on Sunday lunch and were amazed - the place was packed out. Its obviously the in place to go for Shanghai vegie families for Sunday lunch.
Staff don't speak much English but it does not matter as everything is labelled.
Pros: incredible buffet, vegan v vegetarian clearly marked in English
Cons: bit pricey, Sunday lunch not a place for a quiet meal

This restaurant is great if you love fake meat, they have lots of it. However, I’ve visited this in 2017 was never excited about my food--I remember getting a soup (which was OK) and a vegan duck dish made of yuba (which was pretty good). I recently had the twisted BBQ tofu (which was a bit sweet for me) and a square of something white and green (the green being mushed peas, the white being ???), which was interesting, but not my cup of tea. I did like this location better than the one in Jingan, but it seems this one may have possibly closed so double check before you go.

My fav veg restaurant in Shanghai - Edit
Vegetarian Life Style may be my favorite veg restaurant in Shanghai so far. I checked with the staff three times on three different occasions if their food was "vegan" or just "vegetarian," and they assured me every time that everything's vegan - no dairy or eggs.

Best Vegan Chinese Experience - Edit
The restaurant serves Sichuan Chinese Cuisine. Stuff is friendly and can speak English. Also you can find English names in the menu. I had stir fried vegeterian chicken with three cups of sauce, that was the best mock meat in my life. Also dumpling is delicious. It's not a cheap restaurant but totally worth every bite you have!

The food here is diverse and fantastic. There is mock meat but it’s not even needed; that’s how good it is. Don’t worry, when you arrive, it looks like the building has been boarded up but the entrance is just on the side of the building in the driveway.

Great recipe consistency, tastes and quality - Edit
This is the third Jujube restaurant that I visited in Shanghai and it keeps getting better and better. Their recipe consistency is on point and the same applies for the tastes and quality of their dishes. I tried the sweet and sour spare ribs, the mock chicken skewers, the stir fried sword beans and the very delicious chilled mango sago cream with pomello and litchi. They have many veggie versions of traditional Chinese dishes and their mock meats have good textures. This is a fantastic place to take a heavy meat eating Chinese friend and let him/her enjoy the experience. This location has the best interior design from the ones that I checked out so far.

Read moreLots of choices. Dishes, especially the mock meat and fish dishes, are creative and tasty. Your omni friends will definitely be impressed as well! Prices are very very reasonable, especially given the location of the store. Staff was kind and even recommended my friend a health drink as she noticed that he had a cough. Ugh, can't wait to go back!
BTW: We got 3 smaller dishes and 1 main noodle dish to share between two people. Including two drinks our total was around ¥250.

Food in the restaurant was good quality, portions were good size although not very big but in china people tend to order many dishes to share so they are usually smaller than a full portion. Restaurant was very nice, staff didn’t speak much English but menu was in English with photos of every dish which is extremely helpful in this country. We ordered few dishes but half of them we didn’t like very much but it is very hit and miss, ordering food you have never had before. I would be very happy to go this restaurant again.

Street side entry leads to elevators with restaurant location on 3rd floor. Big easy to sign outside at street level. Nice ambiance, good service, good food, lots of choices, apple carrot juice very nice, can share or single serve. Average price 48 RMB. Range from18-60. Good selection of non alc drinks. Many but not all items are faux meat. It was full and busy with young happy people at dinner time. Menu in English and Chinese. Enjoy

Everytime I visit Shanghai I have to go to this restaurant once atleast. Very good ambience and food is delicious. I was recently in Ningbo and went to their outlet in Ningbo which was outstanding as well. I have posted photos and review also.

Found one staff who could understand little English so thank god. However the menu has pictures and you can easily order from the menu without any help.

Price is not expensive. I read a review of someone in Happy Cow comparing it to Ling Zhi restaurant in Singapore. I think it is much better than Ling Zhi as Ling Zhi food has only MSG and it is very very expensive for a poor quality food. This place doesn't use MSG.

As others have mentioned, from the street go through an arch/gate for address #77 then the restaurant is the 3rd 'storefront' on the left. It's a good tourist grade/quality all-vegetarian restaurant. The restaurant is clean, air conditioned and friendly. It's a bit more expensive than the 'locals only' vegetarian restaurants that I also ate at and reviewed but international travelers will feel at home here. I will definitely be coming back!

We had a Sweet &Sour Pork, where the pork was some kind of mushroom, and it got the thumbs up from a very fussy carnivorous Chinese foodie.
Maybe the menu changes, because what I saw in July 2014 doesn't reflect what some of the earlier reviews state. Lots of mushroom-based dishes, some (but not many) mock meat dishes.Bring on the mock meat I say.
Menu is in Chinese, Japanese, English and pictures. Staff are good.
It's in a ritzy luxury shopping area, in a short wide open lane. There's a club opposite with a doorman stationed outside at night. It's not a hangout for ne'er-do-wells. I don't know how any of the earlier reviewers could describe it as down a dingy lane.

This place is your typical Chinese veg place serving a lot of mock meat dishes. If mock meat is your thing, go! Or if you're dining out with meat eaters, they may appreciate this place more than those who like veggies for veggies. I also found it to be a bit too oily.

My Favorite Vegan Restaurant in the World - Edit
This place is great. They have a very extensive menu and a lot of the options are good, and quite creative (there's a ribs dish that comes with fake bones made of rice). A lot of it is based on mock meat, as a lot of chinese food consists of meat. The staff speaks NO english. at any given time there will be maybe 1 person who speaks some broken English, thouh the rest of them speak no english.

Located just a 5 minute walk away from the Huangpi Nan Lu metro station and therefore easy to reach, it can be found in a somewhat dingy alley and has a small supermarket attached to it that carries some organic food and a big fridge of inexpensive mock meat.

Unfortunately the cooks aren't very skilled when compared to their Chengdu location and anything fried is way too oily for my taste.
The reason you see so many foreigners there is the fact that the price is relatively high for the cooking on offer in a location that isn't too fancy, so many locals choose other options.

The actual name of this restaurant is Jujube Tree (Chinese: 枣子树; Zao Zi Shu). Located a bit hidden, but very close to Shanghai's fancy Xintiandi district. Delicious food, but small portions, so, snap at the chance and order some extra dishes. To fill 4 people's stomachs we ordered 14 different dishes plus 4 juices, what would cost us just under 600 RMB.
