Serves meat, vegan options available. Billed as healthy Japanese eatery, this casual place is attached to a full-service dining restaurant. Offers an extensive, separate vegetarian menu with several vegan choices. Order at the counter, and your server brings you the food. Very authentic Japanese decor. Also sells some Japanese gifts and things. Reported closed December 2023.

Seasonal menu - Edit
When I first started eating here, the chef owners story was of how food was healing. Fast forward 18 years and this place has withstood it all. The veggie tempura has kabocha pumpkin and lotus root. I enjoy the ramen and her seasonal menu that understands the heat of Tucson.

Order the sushi - Edit
I ordered the soba noodles, vegan sushi, and tempura. The sushi was definitely the highlight - I loved it! I wasn't a fan of the rest of the dish as it was pretty bland.

Love this place! - Edit
They have a few vegan rolls and items that can be made vegan. Everything is well marked on the menu which makes ordering easy. Most importantly, the food is really good. Highly recommend the tomato ramen, I crave this stuff!

Dinner - Edit
We came to this restaurant so my in-laws who are not vegan can eat what they wanted. My husband and I had the tofu and mushroom bento and the vegetable tempura bento. It was good and filling.

To-Go Sushi was pretty decent! - Edit
I was impressed by the amount of vegan options Yoshimatsu offers! We tried all of the vegan sushi on the menu except for the seaweed salad roll! I’ve never tried a vegan roll with pickled ginger (oshinko roll) and I appreciated the creativity with that! I hope to see different rolls in the future or a specialized vegan roll! Overall good option for numerous vegetable and rice rolls. Next time I will try the vegetable nigiri sushi!

3.5 stars - Edit
Busy restaurant! I was very pleased with the menu - many clearly labeled vegan options. The food was good. The kitchen was pretty overwhelmed it seems as one of the meals for our party didn’t come out until after the rest of us had finished eating.

flavorless stir fried yaki udon - Edit
i only got the yaki udon noodles with veggies and it seriously had no flavor to it. other stir fried noodles bowls i’ve had at other places had so much flavor, i was so excited to have it again, but was very disappointed. i added my own teriyaki sauce to give it flavor. the veggies that cane with it were delicious though and really fresh. i got edamame that was good as well, so i wont give it a low star. would come back for other menu items

Delicious Japanese food - Edit
Vegan options were clearly labeled. We tried the vegan bento box which was a TON of food, all delicious. The agedashi tofu to start was great. We also ordered some sushi rolls and nigiri which were great. We just asked the chef to put together whatever rolls he wanted. One had kale and beets which was actually very good. It’s nice that they’re a “healthier” option. Would definitely go back.

Large diverse menu - Edit
I came because of the reviews while visiting Tucson. The ambiance is nice, the menu is clearly marked, and there are lots of vegan options. I had the Vegetable Matsu Bento. It was $16, so one of the pricier items on the menu, and it was huge. Other items were closer to $10-12. Mine had tempura, tofu caprice, veggie tempura, avocado roll, shiitake skewer, tofu skewer and it was all delicious. I was eating alone so I only got to try my meal, but my meal was huge with lots of dishes and none disappointed.

not just sushi - Edit
We had a great meal at this truly healthy Japanese restaurant. Vegan options are clearly marked on the menu, we had a great bento box and the veggie poke bowl (that we thought was a salad but it is a delicious rice and veggie bowl). We also had dessert (a red bean cake). Worth it for vegan travelers!

Why do people love this place so much? - Edit
Okay, the little gift shop in the front is super-duper cute... But, the food. Well, it's overpriced for what it is, and there isn't all that much variety for vegans. We've been three times because one of our good friends LOVES this place. For four of us, we always spend around $100 and are hungry an hour later. It *is* all healthy. I'll give it that, but I don't plan on going back. We get better vegan sushi from our grocery store (Fry's) and it's 1/2 the price.

Yoshimatsu! - Edit
I have been to Yoshimatsu on several occasions and have always enjoyed my experience there. The menu is very clearly marked with both vegetarian and vegan options, which are plentiful. I usually get a vegetarian bento box when I go - I really like the veggie gyoza and veggie tempura. One thing I will say though, is that the ginger tofu and orange tofu are both very squishy and the flavoring is almost a strange skin-like covering - could be done much better in my opinion but I tend to prefer fried... My friend Dana loves it though! Would definitely recommend to anyone craving Japanese food!

Very vegan friendly - Edit
This place has two separate dining areas - one order at the counter and they bring it to you and the other completely sit down with wait staff. The sit down area you can order anything offered in the restaurant; the counter area you can only order the from the counter menu. The sit down area contains the make-to-order sushi and can be extremely unfriendly to vegans due to the dead fish lying there.
Read moreAll vegan items ARE labeled on the menu!
Sometimes when we eat the vegan sushi we're hungry shortly afterwards so the food doesn't have good staying power. If we eat from the counter menu the food is more filling.
Pros: Filling cooked food, Well labeled items on menu
Cons: Fishy smells, Can be hungry shortly thereafter, Sit down area very cold temp-wise

Yummy - Edit
This was one of my favorite restaurants before going vegan and the only one I still frequent. This is a great option for vegans with omni friends or loved ones, because there is something for everyone. Vegan sushi? Yes. Vegan noodle bowls? Absolutely. Vegan desserts? You betcha.

Ummm... I'll give it another try! - Edit
So I went there last night for dinner. I must say I sincerely appreciate the menu being marked clearly as to what I could eat as a vegan. This made is very easy to choose my meal. Also the staff seemed very knowledgeable when I asked questions. For instance when my miso soup arrived, I asked just to be sure if it was vegan. The girl very politely said yes, then described the ingredients that go into their miso soup. I felt reassured and appreciated her knowledge of what comes out of the kitchen. It isn't often that someone goes out of their way to take someone else's diet seriously!
My food though was not as great as I had expected. Honestly this maybe for two reasons. One, perhaps I'm still stuck in the meat eating, deep fried expecting mind set (I've only been vegan for about 2 months) or maybe it is because I am not too familiar with Japanese food? I'm not sure. I wouldn't discourage anyone from going there as it is well priced, offers several vegan options and from what I could tell, has a very friendly and smart staff. But I'll go back and try some more of the food before judging too harshly. So I say try it out!!! It's also great for taking non-vegan folks in your circle because there are so many options. I know this place has great sushi... I ate it about a year ago!
Pros: Well Priced, Staff knows their food!, Great Variety for all eaters!
Cons: Menu not very descriptive

Great place! - Edit
I used to live in Japan, so I am picky about my Japanese good. As a vegan, I find it to be one of the easiest places to order in Tucson. Sometimes I just go for the seaweed salad and the veggie gyoza off the happy hour menu. My favorite is the udon soup with lots of veggies. The ginger-tofu is super yummy, and the bento boxes have a lot of variety and flavors. The good is always fresh. i love this place.

Yummy! - Edit
Yoshimatsu is absolutely my favorite restaurant in Tucson! It's really the only place where I can go with my (all omni) friends and we'll all be completely satisfied with our meals. Everything I've ever eaten has been amazingly delicious. The vegan and vegetarian options are very clearly marked on the menu. There are a lot of them! My favorites are the ginger tofu bento, the veggie soba soup, and the tofu and mushroom curry. Pay the extra bit for the takikomi rice. It's yummy!
